I know that she answered a fan's question at one point about the epilogue and whether Dudley Dursley's kids might have been Wizards or Witches (because with Lily Potter as an Aunt their theory was there's a chance). JKR's answer was that she couldn't imagine any magical blood surviving contact with Vernon Dursley's line :look:

I was about to say the same thing, in fact she went one step further and called them Homogynous. to non-magic.

    homozygous?

And yeah that makes sense because Lily was muggle born so there's nothing that weird about Petunia having no magic blood. I mean, what that quote amounts to is JKR basically declaring the genetic statuses of the Dursleys more than any statement about the genetics of wizarding in general lol.

I believe there is also stated several places in the books that no witch or wizard are truly pure-blood. If they had only married themselves they would have died out.

The connection may be 10-15 generations back, but there are probably some Muggles in there... The family will probably deny that though...

I would like to make an argument of sorts for the Squibs. In another series I read, the people with magic we're the rulers and protectors of those without it. Those without, or with very little power, tended to gather with each other and avoid those who did have it. Those who did had possessions that were adapted for use with their magics that non magical people shied away from to avoid interacting with those who had the magic to operate those items for them.

In the case of Squibs, who we can assume can sense magic but not use it, they may just feel more comfortable with Muggles because they can't use magic either. A Squib cannot use magical items like wands in their everyday lives, so they feel more comfortable with others that share the same lack, rather than living with people that have something they cannot. Every population has aberrations, like Argus Filch preferring to remain in the medical world, but the lines are drawn more for ease of living, I think.
