So, I finished reading Memory of Light yesterday, and I am sure that this has already been discussed greatly, but I have to ask.

When did the book mention Graendal killing Asmodean? I only knew because I read the index after finishing Towers of Midnight and was like, "WHAT???" Where did I miss the explanation? I am not upset about it, just wondering when it explained it in the book so I can see where I missed it.

From A Wheel of Time Wiki:

The identity of this murderer is left unknown for a long time. It is finally revealed by Shaidar Haran when he blames Graendal for the destruction of three of the Chosen. While he mentioned only Mesaana, it is clear she is also responsible for the deaths of Aran'gar and Asmodean.

I don't remember reading this, but it's been a while and will hopefully run over it in my current read through - I'd really forgotten about this entirely to be honest :look:

Yeah, I read the Index at the back and I was like, "When did I miss that?"

It was mention in Towers of Midnight, when we learn that Graendal is still alive. Shaidar Haran (I think :look:) says something about her making a habit of killing the Great Lord Chosen...
It is never explicitly stated, except in the glossary...

Who killed Asmodean was a question discussed in great detail for years. From what I understand, Robert Jordan thought it was obvious from the way the original scene was written (it was NOT obvious IMO :P) but realized later that people didn't see it. So eventually it was hinted at in later books.

I had a bumped sticker on my old car that said "Who Killed Asmodean?" I got it at The Gathering Storm book signing. :pleased-1:

I thought it was stated explicitly. We got a Graendal POV, and she thought about killing Asmo.

I'm looking forward to reading that section again, because I did not pick up on it, even after I knew who did it (before it was included in a book, via Eleyan via Jordan).

I had a bumper sticker that said, "I killed Asmodean"! It was a great conversation starter. I got it at a book signing, too, for TGS.

At that book signing, Brandon stated that RJ said all the clues were in the book it happened in. I've read that book twice now and still never see where it's even hinted at.

Oh, yes, it WAS "I Killed Asmodean" - that's right! It's been a while and I'd forgotten. :P

I've re-read that book over and over, and even listening to the audiobook (where I'm definitely picking up stuff I've missed before), I still don't see how the clues were there  However, what I have noticed in Lords of Chaos, is at one point when Graendal is talking to Sammael, she either thinks or speaks about Asmodean being dead. She's the only one of the Forsaken at that point to state it like that - the others still don't seem to know about him or Lanfear. So that's as close as I've come to finding a "clue" that it was Graendal.

I don't think it can ever be considered as obvious as RJ thinks it was, but we were able to rule out most of the other Forsaken (though there were many who wanted it to be Lanfear and claimed she could have used one of her wishes to be allowed out into the world). We also saw she went to lllian a few books later to hide evidence that she was involved, even with the Asha'man and Wise Ones running about, so we would expect that she would have been around the palace in Caemlyn. We also knew it wasn't a deliberate assassination (unless we bring in some very convoluted logic, which I think we can rule out because RJ thought it was obvious, which also ruled out any lingering possibility of Moiraine or Lanfear).
It's a bit like that birthday thing from Singapore recently
Adam: I do not know who killed Asmodean
Robert: I do know
Adam: I still do not know
Robert: I know that it is obvious who killed him
Adam: Then I know who killed him as well

I think part of the problem was the language used - I'm sure it says something like "Death took him", which loads of people thought meant Moridin (whether or not he was actually back in play by that point). There was a whole page on the WoT FAQ which was basically "Who killed Asmodean" with the cases for each suspect given a bit like in a game of Cluedo
