If this question isn't really answerable/the answer is "everyone's different," that's fine. I was just wondering, since I don't have much experience and can't observe from afar, what are the conventions with PMs? Are they typically more like texting (short) or e-mails (long, signed)? And should you reply with a quote, or is that unnecessary? I always feel anxious when I don't know the conventions of a new place, sorry for a sort of weird question :look:

It has seemed conversationally dependent to me.

Some things are more like short heads up messages some are more emails.

And as far as who you can pm--most people welcome random PMs :pleased-1:

There's no entry in the Chicago Manual for Style for private messages, if that's what you're asking.

It depends who you're writing to. Sometimes I take days to write a PM, but it's novel-length, and sometimes I'll just send quick little messages. You do you!

I know that most people welcome social pm's. Official stuff is done via email.

I use PM's a lot like texting, very informally :cheeseeni: Social PM's rock :D

It's very person dependent... I know the length of my PMs tends to vary depending on who I'm talking to. And I tend to quote the most recent bit of the conversation, but that's just me. Do it however you want!

I've always treated it more or less like an email. Of course, most of my texts are way too long and are pretty similar to emails as well, so... :cheeseeni:

Thanks a lot, everyone! :pleased-1: Sounds like the answer is "everyone's different and nobody really cares," so that's comforting. :D

If someone writes a long one to me I feel obligated to do the same in return. Feels bad, man. :( I prefer using them as short things myself. lol

I love PMs. :joy They're fun. I'm in the "quote the last bit" camp too, just in case I do end up writing a novel and forget what the initial subject was. :cheeseeni:

I like to leave the quotes in just so the person could have a good overview of what they wrote and what I replied in return. :pleased-1:
