I wasn't sure where to put this, but this seems to be the most general book discussion forum, so I'll stick it here.

What is up with peaches being poisonous? Seriously, did Robert Jordan just really hate peaches or something? It seems so strange that he particularly picked that out as something that is different from our world. Thoughts?

I got this from a secondary source, not sure where the original would be.

RJ's blog 5 October 2005 "YET ANOTHER, IT SEEMS"

- For Child of Lir, peaches being poisonous in the world of The Wheel of Time is one of the things I did to make the world different. Though peach pits do contain small amounts of cyanide, which was once manufactured through processing peach pits. Several other fruits with pits, such as apricots, also have trace amounts of cyanide in the pits. And almonds may be the first genetically engineered plant since humans bred the deadly, to humans, cyanide levels out them to make them edible for people.

Peaches are poisonous but mint flavoring seems to be a warning as well. Elaine hated mint after the Black Ahjah tried to kidnap her by drugging the tea. Egwene smelled and tasted mint while she was a prisoner in the White Tower because of the Forkroot tea.

It's just that Forkroot tastes like mint. I don't think there's anything intrinsically bad about mint flavoring in general. Sort of how like antifreeze smells like butterscotch in our world?

It does? How interesting.

Coming from Australia anti-freeze is something I've never had to come across of course, but I'm quite surprised to hear it smells nice,

Heh, not to totally derail the thread, but it has a sort of sweet smell to it (which is why it's especially dangerous to leave around kids and pets). Some people have said it smells more like maple syrup, but personally, I think it smells like butterscotch.

Anti-Freeze has been used illegally to sweeten cheap wine in Austria in the 1980ies... :x

maple syrup is how I would describe the smell.

I always thought it was strange that Jordan made peaches poisonous too.

I never thought anything of it since I always just assumed he meant peaches were poison because peach pits are poisonous :cheeseeni:

I thought it was kind of funny because my old roommate detested peaches with a passion, and I could totally see her writing a book where peaches killed people. She hates them that much. Hence me asking if Jordan really hated them.
