I'm bored, and I need things to read. Specifically, a new webcomic, online story, or really long fanfiction story to read.

My recommendations (and clues as to what I like :look ) would be...

    Webcomics:

    Girls With Slingshots
*Just a tale of a group of your semi-average totally broke college graduates. Living with mom and pop, avoiding marriage, ignoring your talking cacti, and more!

    Questionable Content
*A slightly...or quite...futuristic spin on the lives of a set of post-college broke adults. Mostly deals with a humorous take on real life problems, with a good dose of intelligent robots called AnthroPCs to liven things up.

    Online Stories:

    Aether of Night: Brandon Sanderson
*This story is kind of a combination of a few of his published books, but predates them. In my opinion, it is still an excellent tale.

    White Sands: Brandon Sanderson
    *Really interesting, hard to explain.

    Big Brother: Cory Doctorow
*A slightly futuristic tale of one teen's life in San Francisco. Schools are far less tolerant of kids who skip, using footstep recognition to track kids who attempt to leave before school's out. (because facial recognition technology violates peoples' rights, doncha know!). The main struggle is against Homeland Security, that takes its fight against terrorists way too seriously, targeting (read: kidnapping and threatening) kids who just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
    linky to these tales

    Fanfiction:

    American Gods
    Let Immortality Begin Again
*An immortal man is thrown into the Pacific Ocean to drown for eternity.

    Avengers:
    Supernanny
*The Avengers are turned into kids. Coulson is the only one qualified to handle this.

How Darcy Lewis Mentally Scarred The Avengers
    *Need I say more?

    Harry Potter

    Muggle Fairytales Are Mad!
*Hermione tells Ron & Harry various fairytales during their desperate hunt for Voldemort's horcruces. It's a good was to distract them from their bad situation, but Ron thinks that Muggles are even weirder after hearing about their ancestral tales.

    Dessert Wars

*A drabble making fun of the shipping wars.

    The Willow Fox
*The war isn't over, Severus Snape won, and while he's a better Dark Lord than Voldemort, the Golden Trio are still fighting to free Magical Britain. Hermione's been undercover as a tea girl in a Japanese-style tea house as a pseudo-geisha for three years, and it turns out that Snape has a weakness for pretty girls who are smarter than they look, and Hermione definitely wants to kill him.

    Princess of the Blacks

*The squib child of James & Lily Potter is left on the Dursley's doorstep so that the Potters can concentrate on raising the Child of Prophecy. However, she is not a squib, and is later adopted by a dark!Sirius Black at age 13 and begins attending Hogwarts. A Potter who doesn't need a wand, has no compunction against using Dark magic, and really doesn't like her biological family. How could any of this possibly go wrong?

    Delenda Est
*What if Harry Potter could have encountered a young Bellatrix Black, before she went mad? What havoc could they wreak on time together? Answer: A Lot.

Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality

*Petunia married a biochemist, and Harry grew up reading science and science fiction. Then came the Hogwarts letter, and a world of intriguing new possibilities to exploit. And new friends, like Hermione, and Professor McGonagall, and Professor Quirrell...

    Letters From Doctor Malfeasant
*Inspired by Doctor Horrible's Sing Along Blog, starring Draco Malfoy!

    Brutal Harry

*Systematically abused and degraded children do not suddenly turn into well-adjusted members of society when removed from the abusive situation. Nor do they tend to be very trusting of others, or forgiving.

Harry Potter and the Sun Source
*Ninjas. Harry is raised by ninjas. How could I give this enough stars to demonstrate how awesome this fic is? Not Naruto ninjas, ninjas.

    Mandragora
*Consider the curiously humanoid mandrake root, or mandragora. It is hideously ugly, deadly dangerous, and a powerful restorative. Why would anything else matter? * * A tale of horror. "If mandrakes were, well, alive in more than just the basic sense of the word – if they could think or feel – then someone would have noticed by now. Obviously."

    Tied For Last

*Hermione is killed by Voldemort, and is now dead. Well, sort of. Turns out that death is a little more complex than she knew...

    The Ultimate Escape Artist

*Harry hates the Dusleys, and more than them, he hates that interfering (censored) old goat Dumbledore who keeps bringing him back to them!

    Hermione the Harem Girl

*Hermione read 'One Thousand and One Arabian Nights' as a young girl and it gave her a rather . . . odd goal in life.

    Kim Possible

    Alone Together

*Kim and Shego are straight, archenemies, and trapped in an alternate reality, just the two of them. This is how they fall in love.

    Most Wanted

*How do you find the most wanted criminal in the world? Why, by sending the second most wanted to find her, of course.

    Death Note

    Redivius

*Light Yagami gets another chance at life, wherein he has to save as many lives as he took in his previous life. Ryuk, of course, follows him around to see how the teen-in-an-infant's-body pulls this one off. Oh, and he only has till the date of his death in the original storyline to manage it.

    Star Trek

    Insontis
    & Insontis II
*Star Fleet has become interested in Insonti technology which returns a person to an infantile state so that:
"As a result of a ceremonial ritual mandatory for successful First Contact negotiation on the planet Insontis, our fearless (and stupidly gullible) captain is now a squalling twelve-month-old. The Insonti can give me no definite re-transformation instructions or even an estimate as to how long the condition will last, other than the inconclusive "He will return to his former state when he has learned the lessons for which the Regenratron was created.""
Yes, this does mean that a kid!Kirk is running around the Enterprise.

And in its sequel, that changes to being a tiny, adorable little half-Vulcan. Fluff, but totally work the read.

    Playtime
*Fun times ensue at Little Star Academy and Pike begins to realize that while he may be the adult, he's definitely not the one in charge.

    Teamwork
*If Star Fleet hasn’t found a way around T’Pol’s brilliant piece of misdirecting legislation yet, they probably never will. They are, after all, only human.

    Naruto

    Incident Report

*Whoever decided it was a good idea to leave Naruto alone with three twelve year olds for a YEAR should be stabbed. Repeatedly.

    Time Braid

*Sakura's an annoying little thing, but she gets way better after her fifth or fiftieth death. Time loop fic!

    Little Uzumaki

*Team Seven drinks from the Fountain of Youth, and Kakashi is left with a team of toddlers to babysit. All Sakura's father has to say is "Oh, not again!"

    Star Wars

In a Barroom Far Far Away
*Anakin gets himself some professional help…

    Sherlock
    These Lines of Lightning
*Ever since he was born, John has been able to perceive people's auras. So he can see straight away that there's something special about Sherlock Holmes.

    Crossovers:

    Avengers/Star Trek

The Continuing Adventures of the StarShip Avengers

*Yes, this is an Avengers/Star Trek Crossover. And it's awesome.

    Sherlock/Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy

    Alien Abduction Blues

*A Hitchhiker's Guide/Sherlock crossover. Mycroft is abducted by aliens. It's quite possibly the worst thing that's ever happened... to the aliens.

    Sherlock/Harry Potter

    A Study In Magic

*What if Sherlock and John had adopted Harry Potter?

    Doctor Who/A Little Princess

    Suppose

*In Edwardian London, after being chased and shot down by Torchwood, the Doctor finds himself saved by a little girl who knows about alien worlds. He struggles to figure out: who and what is Sara? Doctor Who/A Little Princess crossover.

    Harry Potter/Monty Python

    The Cupcake Gambit

*Luna decides it's time to clear the air with Lucius Malfoy. And nothing does that like a cupcake. With just a bit of Monty Python.

o_O What weird things to crossover. Also two things that I love. Now I must read!

Here are some of my faves: http://www.continuingtales.com/ Wow I made that website forever ago...I got tired of the stories disappearing in FF.net purges or when personal websites got abandoned.

Mari Sedai, here's an entire thread of Webcomics recommendations: LINK

Wrt fanfics, I loved the rec you sent me. XD Did I remember to tell you that? Because it was amazing. I need to compile a decent list with synopses. A fair few are on Ashwinder, however. (My list of "favourited stories" contains some WIPs and some stuff that I liked well enough but don't necessarily recommend to others for various reasons.)

Here's ONE list without decent synopses; many not HBP and/or DH compliant, more or less in order of reccing:
    HG/SS 'fic:
The Problem with Purity by Silver Birch -- R. No spoilers on this; it's wonderful. Contains H/D in addition to HG/SS.
In Annulo by LadyOfTheMasque -- NC-17. Very well written. HBP-compliant; not DH compliant.
Unfinished Business by Ramos -- PG-13. Hermione dies unexpectedly and is displeased about haunting Snape's Potions classroom.
Cloak of Courage by WendyNat -- NC-17. A bit dark, a bit angsty, very well-written.
Soul Searching by Quillusion -- NC-17. Molly Weasley is sick and only dark magic can save her
Vanity by Wartcap -- R. A retelling of HBP, with fine attention to detail + Time travel
Somewhere I Have Never Travelled by SavageLand -- R. Hermione Granger travels back in time and ends up seducing a much younger man: Severus Snape
Forget Me Not by VanityFair -- R. Warning: Sad.
First Name Basis by VanityFair -- PG. Short & silly
Getting the Hang of Thursdays by Hayseed -- R. The square root of a time loop problem.

I'll write more recs probably after I get back from Florida...

ETA: Ratings. Note that none of these are just porn, even the NC-17 ones -- i.e., there's an actual, interesting plot here, and sex (when present) is not the focus of the story. I've used the authors' estimations for ratings here, and generally the authors are pretty conservative. That said, don't read the NC-17 or R ones if you're not legally allowed to view such materials in your region, etc etc.

Just a couple, off the top of my head:

Harry Potter and the Paradigm of Uncertainty - the first in a series of 3 "books" set 9 years after finishing Hogwarts. I don't usually like Harry/Hermione but this is done really well. The one warning I'll give is that part 3 was never finished, though the author posted a synopsis of what would have happened to at least give us some closure. For all that, it's really worth a read. There are 15 chapters in books 1 and 2, and 13 in book 3 so plenty of reading and it's a great story.

A Sirius Affair - set in the same universe as HP & the PoU, but centering on Sirius. There is a sequel to this too, called "A Sirius Change". I preferred the first, but both are worth a read for sure :)

An Intimate History of the Greater Kingdom - an original web-novel and its sequel (Son in Sorrow) - the latter has just finished updating on the web so you can read right the way through. I should put an NC-17 warning on that one (or something), just in case the title doesn't give it away that it's not for kids :p I'd recommend any of MeiLin's other work too.

Tales of MU - another original fic about an awkward girl's time at a magical university. (It's better than my description makes it sound). Again, adult situations, may be triggery in parts for some though there are usually warnings.

Elo - massive :fistbump as I love LadyoftheMasque

Ahhh! Me, too. I had a hard time trying to choose just one of her works to rec. XD I rather figure if one likes In Annulo, one will probably be inclined to search out the rest of her work. XD

Have you read any of her original work (under Jean Johnson)? She has one octet out (available on the Kindle) and another series started that I haven't read yet. I've met her in person a fair few times (she's local to me and regularly attends a convention I go to every year), and she's quite nice. She stopped by my table at the restaurant at the con specifically to compliment my parenting this year, too. ^^ Which, y'know, gives her another fair few points, in my book. :lol

The Draco Trilogy (Draco Dormiens, Draco Sinister, Draco Veritas) by Cassandra Clare is *amazing* but I don't think you can find it in its entirety anymore because she took it off the internet when she got her book deal.
Cassie Clare also wrote The Very Secret Diaries, which is absolutely hilarious and probably the only good LoTR fanfiction I've ever read. Or at least, it was awesome and hilarious when I was like 13. I haven't reread it since then :look

Elo that's awesome! I've not read her original fiction, but I have her page bookmarked and it's on my "To do once I finish University" list :)

Sandriel - I have the Draco Trilogy in PDF format if anyone wants them. I do still enjoy the read, slightly less-so after reading a bit more about how the work came about and how she basically "Fifty Shades"-ed it for her book deal :\ But yes, a good story.

Eala - ME ME ME ME ME! Please! I heard about the trilogy after she took 'em offline. *pout* I'll convert 'em to proper Kindle format for you, if you like. :D

:look I actually put a fair few fanfics on the Kindle. I format and edit 'em myself and everything. :lol

Another good one that I can't be arsed to find a current link for: Blood Magic by GatewayGirl. The basic premise is that Snape is Harry's father. :D I'd love to replace HBP with that 'fic, it's so good.

So, during my lunch break I tried to read some of the HP stuff Elo posted... they ALL require logins because they're rated M or NC-17 or whatever. WTF? Now I'm even more scared of fanfiction than I was before.

A lot of things are marked at a higher rating than they really deserve, and most sites require registration and log in to view anything that is more explicit than a chaste kiss. :p That said, a couple are explicit. :p Nothing too bad, imo (I didn't rec those), but a couple do have sex in 'em. :cheese

Here's Blood Magic, btw: LINK -- It has nothing more explicit than a couple of chaste kisses. Enjoy. El, if you're scared of Fanfic in general, start with Blood Magic.

I added MPAA-type ratings to the recs list above. :p I'd say Blood Magic is ... PG? At most? It might not rate above a G, frankly, at least in terms of sex/violence. There're some suspenseful scenes, and it deals with death and things like that -- it's set after 5th year. But it's no scarier/whatever than the actual HP series.

Haha, well, I was more annoyed that I was trying to read the damn things on my lunch break on my phone, so I didn't want to fuss with registering for a site right then. But it still made me go, "uhh, what am I getting into?" :lol

    Wow, just wow.
I have just read the fanfic recommendation from Marivea Sedai, ''Tied for Last''. It was amazing. Really left me speechless. At the beginning I was a bit skeptic, and saw a few loopholes, but in the whole, the fic is simply breathtaking. Especially the ending, it almost brought tears to my eyes with the sheer beauty of it.

One of my favorite web comics is Sequential Art. It's about an artist who lives with a few anthropomorphic animals. Shenanigans ensue:lol. I found it very entertaining.
