This was an event that caused much anger and sadness for the situations and people involved. :(
And was responded to, as was said before, quickly with careful thought, determination and sensitivity.
The potential was there for an implosion and dissolution of the community, and that did not happen.

Bravo to our leadership, to Hammar, and to all the membership for pulling together.

Thank you for all of your work (and I am sure, knowing the legal system and the agencies involved, it has taken a good amount of time), and for this update.
It is greatly appreciated.
Stealing tens of thousands of dollars over the course of several years is not a "mistake". It is an intentional criminal betrayal, and I'm extremely pleased that the authorities are investigating this so that he does not continue to do this to other organizations he's "helping".
You know that I love you, Stephan,.mentee mine. You're showing a LOT of compassion here - more than I'd ever be able to muster in this situation. That's an incredibly admirable personality trait. :hug
I just would like to know that, when all the dust settles, we'll be apprised of what, if any, punishment Riley receives for being such an ass hat. I am quite willing to wait since I know these things can take years. I just feel that we are entitled to know the eventual outcome.

I'd like to second all of this. And to thank Raevyn for your thoughtful response. I didn't know Riley personally--I was still fairly new when this went down--so I wasn't as personally hurt, but I was incredibly shocked by the betrayal. I am glad to know that he does have friends in his life. No one is completely good or completely evil, and even people who have done terrible things deserve to have someone they can turn to. Broadway nerd that I am, I'm kind of hearing "No One Is Alone" right now.

Also thank you for helping those of us who kind of skim Ubah's reports to know about the state of those loans to board members. I too was wondering about this recently.

Also, I still think our lawyer has the coolest board name ever.

I cannot believe I never noticed that during the thick of things. :desk

Thank you for the update and all the hard work by everyone involved.
Such an unfortunate situation. Thankfully the Tower still stands.

IDK buying a new car and iPhone, among other things, doesn't seem like something a person who is in "deep financial problems" would, or even should, be doing. I'd feel a bit more compassion if he was saving his sick kid or something instead of posting about all these new, frivolous things that he's getting on facebook (publicly).

Thank you, Hammar and Mother, for the update. I remember that I did not understand the full gravity of the situation at the time, but as things were allowed to be publicly revealed to us, I see now that those of us who knew Riley as a Tower member wanted some things resolved. Those things are no longer feasible because of the seriousness of what happened. I remember when this first happened and how shocked we all were, but we still rallied together and gave the Tower the support it needed at the time. I am still proud of how we responded.

I considered casually pointing out your Ajah's propensity for such events... and decided to go for it anyway despite the interestingly high number of Browns in this thread. :brown-blink:

Hammer also has a pretty snazzy avatar to go with that name, and has been a great boon to us through this process. Thank you so much for continuing to update us as able, and thank you so much to our community for containing to support and be involved in rebuilding and strengthening the Tower. :pleased-1:

I could have sworn I posted in this thread. I meant to post in this thread... :scratch Anyway :embarassed:

I appreciate the transparency with which this situation has been handled. I am glad to hear that things seem to be working their way to a fair conclusion.

Also, I had to look up Hammar's last name as I didn't think "Hammar" was all that clever on its own... Now I get it :p But I probably never would have noticed

Basically this. I don't see any need to be compassionate to someone buying luxury items with stolen money. Of course he's a person. Criminals aren't 2-dimensional fictional characters dressed all in black, stroking a knife and chortling at the evil deeds he's done and will do in future. Only Ram is like that. Everyone else is a person and should be held accountable for their actions. Do you think you'll find one person in jail who isn't a person? I don't think anyone is under the illusion that he's twirling his black mustache as he ties the whole Tower to the train tracks. I don't care in the slightest how filled with regret he is or how much it's ruined his life so far; that and fifty cents gets us a bag of chips.

I will repeat the sentiment I gave in the original post revealing his criminal actions: He has proven himself an untrustworthy person and I hope EVERYONE in his personal life learns about it when the justice system and IRS have concluded their investigations. He should never be in a position of power again. He should lose his professional licensing. He should go to jail for a long time and I will be pleased when I see it.

I am not interested in the slightest about revenge. This is 100% justice and prevention. Everyone is welcome to give him love and compassion; that's fine. He'll earn none from me. I am very glad the administration took things seriously and reported him. We have laws and jails for a reason and he's a perfect candidate.

I agree, although it sounds a little harsh. I may not have been here when it happened, but what he did was an acute betrayal of trust.

Avatar? You mean my portrait? I appear much more composed than I felt; the Rotterdam heat was sweltering as that unkempt man painted it.

I assume if there are charges filed and a court case, we will be told (as it will be in the newspapers, so there shouldn't be any legal reasons for secrecy). Once the investigations have been finished and the legal authorities have made a decision, will be be told whatever that is?

Hammar, I like you more and more every single time you post. :pleased-1: And your name is the awesome.

As far as Riley goes, I am compassionate in that he has lost himself a wonderful community who would help pick you up if you fell down and support you to the last. He lost wonderful people who, despite the horrific thing he did, are big enough to look past it. And I can't be thankful enough that it is also a community generous enough to ensure that the site lasted through such a hard time. I am also compassionate that his future is pretty much a dark shadow and hopefully, this will hang over him the rest of his life. However, he brought this on himself. He deserves whatever outcome he receives. I second what Zasha said about his frivolous purchases. It may have started as just a one time thing in desperation, but after not getting caught, it turned into a personal piggy bank. I sincerely hope that he has to pay back every red cent that he "borrowed". I wish Riley the best as far as moving on is concerned, and am thankful that there are amazing people like Raevyn who can still stand with him and support him. But in the end, when he wronged this community, he wronged me, and I have no forgiveness for it.

I would be much more compassionate if it appeared there was a credible plan on his behalf to pay all the money back, plus reasonable interest. But having not heard that he is planning to do so, plus his frivolous purchases - the money for which COULD be used to repay those who are now out of pocket because of his actions - I would say my compassion/sympathy is at negligible levels.

It's not ever, EVER 'borrowing' if what was taken is not returned.

Hence the " ". He claimed that he was intending it as a temporary loan and intended to pay it back. I had meant it to be sarcastic, but I know that it doesn't convey well via text. Don't get me wrong, I am still very angry about this. Just because I am compassionate that he cut himself off from a wonderful community does not mean that I feel bad for him. I do not know how I would get by if I did not have this community and all of the wonderful people I have met here.
