Re: the dagger - just cause I am doing a reread at the moment, the dagger in the teaser is actually the way it’s described in the book with the Ruby set into the hilt.
Yes, I just thought it would be more elaborately designed... And for some reason I thought it was of gold, though that would be very impractical...
I always imagined it in the hilt, too, like the one in the trailer. Ahmyra, what's the actual text description for it?
A curved dagger with a gold scabbard worked in strange symbols. Fine gold wire wrapped the hilt, which was capped by a ruby as big as Rand's thumbnail, and the quillons were goldenscaled serpents baring their fangs.
If they are smart they release it one at a time, Netflix Style all at once drops are really bad for a show.
If we go by some other shows on Amazon, like the Boys, they are starting to do it weekly. Other Apps are, as well like Starz (American Gods), not to mention King Disney doing it with the Mandalorian and Wandavision. So hopefully they stick with the weekly format!
Linkelivar, that text really does sound more like the ruby on the end of the handle to me. Odd that I pictured it more like the show's version when I read it all those years ago! Either way, I'm just happy we've laid eyes on an actual dagger and visual from the show! Jocasta, a lot of people are discussing that final image. It's unclear, but it may be an image of a dragon etched in stone. Or else maybe a fish or something else entirely.
I'm in agreement with once a week release gives the viewers time to digest and talk about each episode as they come out. Look at what fans are doing with Wandavision.
Sorry, just saw this. I went looking for all the references to Mat’s dagger. It’s described differently almost every time in the first 3 books. In the Dragon Reborn in the chapter Secrets, Elayne describes it as “curved dagger in a golden sheath, a Ruby the size of a pigeon’s egg capping the hilt” Also in the Dragon Reborn in the chapter Healing, it is described with the Ruby capping the hilt. Later in the chapter Awakening it’s a dagger with a Ruby in the hilt. In The Great Hunt, it’s simply a Ruby-hilted dagger or Ruby-tipped hilt or some variation. Then in the Eye or the World in chapter Flight Down the Arinelle, it’s described as “a curved dagger with a gold scabbard worked in strange symbols, fine gold wire wrapped the hilt which was capped by a Ruby as bag as Rand’s thumbnail and the quilling were golden-scaled serpents baring their fangs” All of this to say, it’s described differently depending on where you are. At one point I read the Ruby was set into the hilt but I can’t find it now.
All those descriptions of the ruby capping the hilt are why I always imagined it in the end of the hilt.
One could look at it as a matter of perspective. A group of people rarely see something the same way, they each note certain details but omit others.
It will probably play better on film this way. When someone's handling it you're less likely to see it if it's on the end, and when it's not being handled it's probably being hidden away anyway.
Not just that, it allows the big moments to shine instead of rushing into each other. Imagine if they dropped all of Mandolorian Season 2 at once. The last episode would overshadow the middle ones in a big, big way, there is also the idea of habitual viewing where you want to ingraine the idea of "Coming to X place at X time for X show" and turning that into a habit so the viewers will turn "X time at X day" from "X show" to "go see what is on Amazon." which will mean more customer retention.
