My thoughts so far…

I read the first three books when I was a kid and loved them, but due to various events didn’t keep up with the series. Decades later the TV show arrived and I absolutely loved it, so I bought the entire set of trade paperbacks and got back into it.

I’m currently on book six, Lord of Chaos. I’ve read that there’s a “slog” in the middle of the series that subjectively varies depending on the reader, but typically is somewhere around books 7-10. I have to say my personal anecdotal experience is “the slog” started earlier.

The first four books are absolutely great. I have some nitpicks, but not worth mentioning. The good far outweighs the bad in my opinion. Starting with book five, the Fires of Heaven, there was a “disturbance in the Force” (slipped in a Star Wars reference). In book six that disturbance became an alarm.

The last thing I want to do is come to a place full with fans of something and rant against that thing. I’m very familiar with that sort of behavior and despise it. However, I would like to considerately post my thoughts on a few things.

The biggest gripe is there’s just so much filler! No hyperbole, I believe these books, especially the latter ones I’ve read so far, could be almost cut down by half! There’s simply too much description and repetition. I suppose if you’re a huge fan of the world though, there could never be too much of it. I sympathize. Think of the piece of Star Wars you dislike most and know I deeply love it.

The rest are the same I’m sure you’ve heard before. The male vs female dynamic is occasionally tiresome. The romance is awkward, sometimes nothing really happens for a long time, and there are too many inconsequential characters.

It may not sound like it, but I do like Wheel of Time a lot. I definitely intend on finishing it because I have to know what happens! I just think with some editing, the story would hit so much harder. (I think the same of Peter F. Hamilton.)

I should finish book six later today and start book seven, A Crown of Swords, next week, and I am sort of worried about starting “the slog” when I’m already having some issues.

I was sad to see the TV series cancelled. I thought it was outstanding, especially season three. I’d rather Amazon renewed it and cancelled Rings of Power. Imagine how good it could have been if they swapped budgets!

Sorry for the Robert-Jordan-length post. Please don’t hit me with balefire. May the Force be with you.

It is worth the time. And the first read through is that, the first read through. It will never be the same the next time around. I've read the first book a few times, and each time either find something I hasn't noticed the first time through, or due to life experiences, reflect on in a different way. I am currently working on a re-read.

There are certain areas in the series where I went, why are we spending so much time with "blank" when I really need to know what is happening with "blank". I did find out, but I was happy to get through those sections (though they did happen for a reason).

While I do appreciate a lot of the details as I like to experience the world as much as possible, and I especially enjoyed the clothing description (I do hand sewing, and like to invision the clothes and attempt to create them), there is a lot of detail. And at times it was too much detail, and often repeated information, but with the length of the series, I suppose done in part as "reminders" of information.

I hope you enjoy your first read through. And feel free to share your experience.

Keep it up! And also keep up with the star wars references :clap2: Yeah, the wheel of time is an adventure with bumps in the road, and you never know where they will hit you. Some bumps in the road might also send you flying. It's so big, so much happens, so many characters, you can't possibly end up liking them all.

I'm in book 14 for the second time now, and one of the most surprising things to me is hoe different the sections and events feel. Stuff that seemed to drag on before now flew past or vice versa. It's probably not just the story but also my personal mood, ability to process information and w lot more things that determine how I experience the story. Well a lot of meta talk lol sorry but I've read through the books in a surge and I often don't know that happens in which volume, so keeping myself from spoilering now until I can check some stuff for a bit!

I agree with everything above! I read the entire series twice and find that where I am in my own life seems to have a lot to do with how each book feels to me. And I definitely noticed things in my second read through that I missed in my first headlong, rush through the series. Just persevere, then after sometime has passed, and you don’t remember all the details so clearly, read the whole thing again. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how many did textures you perceive the second time through!

Confession time here... on my first read through, around book 8 I just started to skip chapters of characters I didn't care for. "Who IS she?" I would lament, before skipping someone. I won't say who for spoiler purposes but then on a second read through I didn't skip anything and one of those characters became a favourite! It was definitely to do with the difference between young teenager and superfan adult.

But the gripes are extremely valid and the same as what I used when discussing the series with my partner (who is trundling through Book 4 right now). Keep at it, there's some great scenes to look forward to.

If you love something, you can criticize it too. Many fans share the same issues as you do. We are almost in the 2030s now and reading the series, there are certain things that come across as outdated, to say the least. That’s why I was so excited for the TV show and devastated that it was cancelled- there was so much potential.

I hope you keep reading and are able to finish the series at some point. There are some later books that are kind of… boring hehe. But the ending does tie things together pretty nicely I think.
