Living After the Last Battle

Unless I missed something while I gulped down the book, there is not much food left in the world after the Last Battle:(. Before the Battle, people were starving to death or on small rations. Much of the world's remaining food was sent to the soldiers, and many of them had to eat for about a month. I do not think the book mentioned the creation of food when life returned to the world. Even with the countless losses in the Battle, there are still many mouths to feed and little food to feed them. It seems that all of the fields will need to be replanted, and the crops will need to fully grow until they are useful. As Rand cannot walk through farms and make the plants grow as he did in ToM, there will be long months of hunger ahead until people will be able to have three meals a day. Does anybody know how people will live in the coming months until food is being steadily produced?

What is to say that the pattern, now righted, won't fix much of that? Or that Rand can't actually walk among the nations, making things better? I have little doubt he would do his best to ensure that the world righted itself in the coming years, helping those he could. The storms have calmed, so there are plenty of fish in the sea, which will help.

Yes, it will be hard. Yes, people will starve to death. But in the end? The light won, and all will be able to work together to ensure none starve, as the world becomes whole once again.

He can't if he wants to stay anonymous, but the Ogier will do that anyway.

Given that the population of Randland was decimated, and The Dark One is no longer able to spoil foodstuff, I think everyone will be all right until the next harvest comes along.

He doesn't have to say "Oh hello I'm Rand, the Dragon reborn and here is a song." He had time between finding it and "dying" to leave a note for the ogiers or even tell them about it before hand. Or he can go up to them after, pretending to be a Tinker and exclaim that he finally found the song. There are many ways, but between the song, the fact that the DO isn't going to touch the pattern anymore they will probably be able to make it.

I would like to think that just because the battle is won everything is magically solved. It would cheapen things. So I think that, yes, it will be tough. People will starve to death. It will be a chaotic, rough time before things stabilise again.

It does mention that the world was blooming, everywhere. Obviously food will still need to be harvested/prepared, but I like to think that the raw materials are there. Yes it'll still be hard work and I'd imagine that the Aiel will be busy for a while. Didn't Nicola's prophecy something like "The Battle done but the world not done with battle"? Or something along those lines. It's not an instant "Hugs and puppies" victory, but I do think that Rand's victory will at least have given them a head start on the food issue.

The lion sword, the dedicated spear, she who sees beyond. Three on the boat, and he who is dead yet lives. The great battle done, but the world not done with battle. The land divided by the return, and the guardians balance the servants. The future teeters on the edge of a blade" (Nicola's first Foretelling;
So, anyone who actually heard and paid attention would expect Rand to have survived. It does suggest there may be more fighting

"South. East or west would do, but he figured he wanted to go someplace away from it all for good. South first, then maybe out west, along the coast. Maybe he could find a ship"

Is about as close as I can get to a mention of an actual boat.

Probably a reference to something yet to come about Rands further travels.

I just have to say...if my husband suddenly looked like his arch enemy I'd have a really hard time being comfortable around him for a while. :look:

I always interpreted the "boat" as simply meaning that they're in the same boat figuratively - that is, in a relationship with Rand. And that's one of the hints in the books that's a main reason people weren't surprised at Rand's survival.

I thought the boat might be a funeral Pyre on a boat, but that turned out not to be true

The boat was one of Min's viewings wasn't it? If that is the case then the boat could very well be the pyre. If I'm remembering Norse traditions correctly didn't they send their dead out into a boat and light it on fire? We know that RJ mixed a good bit of Norse mythology into the series and Min's viewings are not literal so the viewing could have simply been a representation of the funeral.
