I haven't read the Dresden files yet, but been planning to. Could somebody briefly describe his style without spoiling the books? Thanks!

    Squeeeeee!! Now that's super exciting :D :D

I had a random urge a couple of months ago and re-read the Codex Alera series of his. Equally as wonderful the third (maybe fourth :scratch) time through! :D

His style is modern fantasy set in current-day Chicago. He tells the story from the first-person viewpoint of the main character who is a wizard. The series is very much serial in that you want to read them in order. While the main plots in the book are pretty self contained, there are threads of an overarching plot that develop throughout the series. Each book generally involves some sort of mystery that Dresden gets involved in. In addition, the character progression is fantastic and in order to truly appreciate the series you need to grow with the characters. His humor is dry, sharp, and snarky and helps to offset some of the darker tones in the series, keeping it from getting too depressing or melodramatic. If you saw the TV series, ignore it. While entertaining, it has little to do with the books besides broad character strokes.

The books are amazing. Can't wait until November.

Thank you Alcyon! That definitely sounds interesting! The first book is already on my Kindle, waiting for me to finish with the Liveship Traders by Robin Hobb.

The Dresden Files are one of my all time favorite series.

I also enjoyed the Codex Alera books, but Dresden holds a special place in my heart.

And for those who haven't read Ghost Story, yet ... hoo-boy.

I started reading the Dresden Files, and read the 5 first in a row. I definitely like the series, but maybe it's not the best way to read them in a row! :lol Needed a pause from the style, but I'm sure I'll continue reading it - in between reading other books!

After a Robin Hobb reading binge I returned to Dresden Files (book 6 - Blood Rites). I must say I love the banter of the characters, and the fast proceedings, but the descriptions of Harry, Blue Beetle, Murphy, Harry's apartment, Mister, the effect of magic to technology, etc. which occur in every book almost the similar way wear me out a little. Though I know it's an issue only when you read so many of the books in a row, and would be totally different if there was always a year or so between the books. :p And I've only read the first books so far, so maybe there aren't as many similar descriptions of things in the later ones.

All in all, I like the series, but most likely won't re-read them. :)

He usually posts a chapter or two for free online in advance, doesn't he? Has that happened with this book? I'm super super curious to see what he's going to do with the series after that last book.

I have mixed feelings about the last book...I both enjoyed and disliked it, but wouldn't go so far as to say loved or hated it. Now, the book BEFORE that...was just awesome.

The Codex Alera? I haven't read it yet but I heard it's pretty awesome! I started it but had to stop because I was still in the mood for Dresden's sarcastic humor, not a new WoT-esque fantasy.

Yes, that one! My friend has read it. She said it's really good. And I respect her book recommendations, so I'm excited. :D But I'll probably read it after Dresden Files.
