My wife actually speaks a bit of Japanese. Her parents lived there for a while. My father-in-law is fluent in Japanese. Definitely a skill I'm envious of!

I think mostly what I don't think I'd function well in would be the whole hierachic honor culture. Not sure how much that is just stereotypes and how much of that everyday people deal with. I always get the impression that most of the culture is based on that. And then there's that movie, Shall We Dance, about a Japanese guy who does ballroom dancing, which is scandalous because you're not even supposed to hold hands with your wife.

Yeah, I think integrating into the culture would be difficult. :look: There are always things that you just pick up as you grow up when you're born into a culture.

It actually gets easier if you learn katakana and hiragana and then completely drop romaji. It's very weird. It's like, as long as it's romaji, you want to think in terms of English, but the second it's all furagana, you think differently.

私は、十か月東京に住んでいました。とてもたのしかったです。
