On August 26th, a Category 4 hurricane hit the state of Texas. It was the strongest hurricane to hit the state since Hurricane Carla in 1961. The Texas coast has since been devastated from wind damage and major flooding. It is estimated that Hurricane Harvey dumped 9 trillion gallons of water on the area in the first onslaught which is more than any documented tropical storm in history. And as the storm dissipates, it continues to dump even more rain.

Here are quotes of some of the damage:
"It was reported that at least part of Rockport-Fulton High School in Rockport collapsed with people inside. A Fairfield Inn in the city was severely damaged, forcing 128 people to evacuate. One person died in a house fire in the city, unable to be rescued due to the extreme weather conditions. By the afternoon of August 26, more than 20 in (510 mm) of rain had fallen in the Corpus Christi metropolitan area."

"The local National Weather Service office in Houston observed consecutive all-time daily rainfall accumulations on August 26 and 27, measured at 14.4 in (370 mm) and 16.08 in (408 mm) respectively. Locally, some areas may receive as much as 50 in (1,300 mm) of rain."

"Several tornadoes were spawned in the area, one of which damaged or destroyed the roofs of dozens of homes in Sienna Plantation. As of August 29, 14 fatalities have been confirmed from flooding in the Houston area, including 6 from the same family who died when their van was swept off a flooded bridge."

"Late on August 27, a mandatory evacuation was issued for all of Bay City as model projections indicated the downtown area would be inundated by 10 ft (3.0 m) of water. Flooding was anticipated to cut off access to the city around 1:00 p.m. CDT on August 28."

These are just some of the examples of damage to the area. Texas could really use some love! Starting today, we are calling on our Servants of All and running a donation drive for the victims of this horrible tragedy. You may donated to the charity of your choice.

Having contacted the local Red Cross for assisting with disaster relief locally, what I can say from that is that most relief organizations will ONLY accept monetary donations. As tempting as it is, they sometimes don't have the facilities to hold physical donations of food, clothing, medicine, and shelter items like blankets, etc. If you are interested in assisting the affected areas and aren't sure if they will/can accept physical items, contact a relief organization to find out how they want/need to proceed with donations and what types of donations they can accept.

Also, please consider the Texas Diaper Bank, many people who've lost their homes don't have access to diapers for children and that would be really helpful.

Thanks to all those helping out our city!

I'm an AmeriCorps volunteer this year and we got this today regarding Hurricane Harvey. I thought I'd post it here in case anyone can help.

Dear friends,

The American Red Cross is requesting volunteers who are skilled in shelter operations to support Hurricane Harvey response efforts in Texas. To learn about opportunities with the American Red Cross visit our blog.

More opportunities to volunteer may be available with Texas Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster. You can find a list of those and more at NationalService.gov/Harvey. There you can also find information on where to seek assistance, should you, or friends and family be impacted by the storm’s effects.

Please share this email with others you know who may wish to volunteer to help Texans recover.
