I do think you're right about it being THE last battle, as opposed to another last battle in the cycle of the wheel, although that's just speculation.

The thing is, it isn't really.
Since the people of the world KNOW time is circular, there is no reason they'd call something THE last battle, instead of A last battle, or the last battle OF AN AGE or of a wheel turn or some such.
So far the Aes Sedai kept saying how the prophecies are very hard to understand etc., but truth be told, most have been rather straight forward so far, when it really came down to it. There for I see no reason not to assume that THE last battle isn't just as plain. It's THE last battle.

I also think Fain will play a big role, and I was reaffirmed by the first chapter published in the TOR website. The parts written in Ran'd point of view shows he's planning something BIG, and the way it was described shows it's not just the breaking of the seals and all that stuff that we already know.

(sorry if I write some of the names wrong. In Belgium they are written differently for pronunciation's sake.)

I don't think Padan Fain can defeat or even occupy the DO. Remember: when PF caused Rand's second unheal-able wound, Damer Flinn said he contained it and that the two evils in the wounds would cancel each other out over time. This happened in CoS and still the wounds excist. For me, this means that both evils could fight each other, but that PF will never stand a real chance in occupying the DO for the rest of eternity (if he still excists after this Last Battle).

But that's the point - here we have an evil which is as strong as the DO. Don't forget, while Fain's evil was unable to defeat the DO's one, the Do's one is unable to defeat Fain's as well.

Neither one is stronger than the other, which is why I don't see how Fain can be used to seal the DO. I agree that his character will be pivotal; I just can't quite wrap my mind around the "how" he will be so important. :scratch

The same way he was important with cleansing Saidin, I guess. In THAT instance his evil WAS powerful enough to defeat the DO's evil.

I think they are not as strong as each other. The only thing we know is that PF is as strong as the physical manifestations of the DO. And we know that those are not always as powerful as the DO himself. Like Shaidar Haran who wasn't able to spend long periods of time outside of Shayol Ghul in the beginning...

Actually, we know that PF has powers from both the DO AND Mashadar... That's what makes him so strong, and why so many shadow spawn fear him. People seem to forget, because in later books he hangs around with humans, but we're talking about a man that can easily kill a Myrdraal, torture him before his death...
I believe it's that combination between DO power and Mashadar power that grants him more strength then just a manifestation of one of the two evils. He's both.

I think the problem with this conundrum is that we have no idea how great the power of the DO really is. We have seen some spectacular feats, but we only know certain limitations (not stepping out of time, etc.) As long as we don't know his full arsenal of powers or witness a showdown between Padan Fajin and the Dark One we will never know...

Agreed, but I have a feeling that's not going to happen (I mean we won't see it, even if it actually happens).
