Um. Wat. This is so ridiculous I had to share. Plus, the responses are pure gold. https://twitter.com/pottermore/status/1081242428105998336

Pottermore on Twitter: "Hogwarts didn't always have bathrooms. Before adopting Muggle plumbing methods in the eighteenth century, witches and wizards simply relieved themselves wherever they stood, and vanished the evidence. #NationalTriviaDay"

People appropriately raise many questions, such as did they not have chamberpots? Did kids have to have their parents vanish the evidence during the summers because of the underage magic rule? What do squibs do?

    Just.... why?? Dear god, why?

Also, I don't think they learn Vanishing spells until the 5th year... Does that mean that the older students, Prefects or teachers had to Vanish other peoples crap?

I could buy it if she said that they did in designated areas and then the crap was Vanished...

Yeah, I don't understand why they didn't say that. Which would effectively be a very nice method of cleaning chamber pots... that makes so much more sense. And honestly, who would want to go to the bathroom right where they're standing, presumably in front of people?

I can't stop thinking about this. :lol

On Facebook we were discussing the “wherever they stood” part of the line. Like... just whipping it out wherever they are.. in the street, in class, in the pub at your table........

Yeah. My husband and I were talking about how sure, it makes sense if they had rooms where they'd go, then Vanish it. Sure, ok. But who actually wants to go to the bathroom while they're standing there talking to someone? I mean, it usually takes a while too....

But yeah even animals usually designate certain areas to go to the bathroom and go off and take their time. Are wizards stupider than animals?

As a historian I sincerely don't understand the problem. In the real world people relieved themselves for example on the streets at least until the 19th century. Chamber pots - if used - were emptied on the streets, and no, usually noone had a look before emptying if someone was walking there. Cholera and other diseases caused by urine and excrement have been a huge problem until cities had proper canalisation. The Roman canalisation had been forgotten and/or destroyed for centuries (and even there, people sat side by side in the latrines and shat and talked at the same time - and no, without any partitions). Real kings defecated in their throne rooms well into baroque while receiving visitors, and it was seen as an honour to take part.

    ^This.

I mean, there WERE designated rooms for loos in the British castles, but it still went down and out with the rest of the rubbish (thank you, Time Team!). If Hogwarts was a repurposed castle (maybe an ancient king bequeathed it to Slytherin or somebody without realizing they were magical?), then logically it should have had a loo room in it already. At the least there would have been chamber pots in every room and the house elves would be taking care of it if the human couldn't for XYZ reason.

    :cheese

Would this mean no potty training in the wizarding world until indoor plumbing? What if they were Muggle born? How do you cope with spending your early years hiding it from people by going to use a chance pot in a private room and show up and Hogwarts where people just go freely?
