Katherine has decided to step down from the role of Mistress of Revels - North America due to time-consuming work commitments. Thank you for your service!

This position is the most demanding of all the MoR roles due to the fact we have two scheduled official events a year that they are responsible for. This position doesn't have down time, it rolls from one event to the other and they often overlap! Viv has kindly agreed to stay on through a transitional period, so you will have experienced support over the next several months.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Solicit proposals for each North American Event. Advise members of proposal requirements and aid in preparation of proposals as requested.
  • Work with Amyrlin, Keeper, Shatayan, and Director of E&C to choose a location for each North American Event.
  • Work with Local Liaison and Director of E&C to plan details of the event.
  • Organize and Delegate. You will need to work with a team of committee leaders, committee members, local liaison, site contacts, and TarValon.Net executives, often at the same time.
  • Crisis Management. No matter how much pre-planning you do, the unexpected will happen. Recognizing issues early and addressing them calmly and promptly is key.
  • Share insights with other MoRs to ensure continually improving events.
  • Attendance at both North American events each year.
Requirements:
  • Must be a member of any rank in good standing for at least one year.
  • Must have attended at least one official real life event.
    • Bonus points for attendance at more than one event, more than one kind of event (Anni vs. Spring Fling vs. Euro, etc.), and/or significant committee participation.
  • Must be able and willing to travel to both North American events at your own expense.
    • The event ticket is covered for MoR, but not transportation or other expenses.
  • Must have a plan to store/transport equipment for events.
    • This includes banners, shinai, and other assorted equipment.
  • Must be professional.
    • You represent our community with outside organizations such as lodging options and vendors, and potentially negotiate contracts with these groups.
    • You also communicate regularly with our membership about serious topics, so you need to be clear in your communications.
    • You are held accountable for the responsible management of the funds many of our members pay to attend events. Professionalism, high-performance, and self-starting are mandatory.
  • Must be detail-oriented.
    • You must be able to think logically through the entire event and all needs for members. Everything from transportation, food, activities, payments, registration, marketing, budgeting, materials, decorations, room assignments, negotiations with the site, etc.
  • Must be organized and discreet.
    • There is a lot of information to keep track of, including legal contracts with the facilities, schedules, and registration information including medical and personal data which must be kept confidential.
  • Must be able to dedicate anywhere from 1 to 15 hours or more per week to this role.
    • This role has some flexibility in when things must be done, but with the magnitude of work and balancing at least two events at any given time, the workload can be significant.
    • The last few weeks prior to an event can require a significant amount of dedicated time, so you must be prepared for that eventuality.
This position is extremely satisfying - seeing your hard work and dedication pay off in a successful real life event planned for your fellow Tar Valon members. If you would like to apply for this position, please send an email with the subject line APPLICATION – MoR NORTH AMERICA – YOURNAMEHERE explaining why you think you would be a good fit for the position to: events@tarvalon.net, keeper@tarvalon.net and amyrlin@tarvalon.net. Applications are due by October 15, 2022.

(Posting this on behalf of Ahmyra, who is on a short LoA.)

Quick question:
I noticed this has a requirement to store materials - is there a budged for this, or is it an expectation that you have a free room/closet/space for the materials? Related, do these materials often incur an added travel fee when flying?

@Vivianna L'antreau might be able to answer this better than I can.

I believe we have a decorations tote, a travel tube for the new banners and a First Aid Kit.

I can answer some of that. Shipping or luggage fees for event stuff is reimbursed. Actual storage has not been in the past. Viv would need to weigh in on the actual space it all takes up currently.
