Welcome!! How exciting for you to be going through the series for the first time!! I can understand the desire to rush through to avoid spoilers, but there's so much you might miss if you go too quickly!! Don't go too fast.

I cannot agree with @Blythe Alawdin enough. Priory of the Orange Tree is fantastic. If you're also interested in a shorter fantasy series with a similar epic scale to the world, I also recommend Grace of Kings by Ken Liu (and the rest of the Dandelion Dynasty series). It's another series of books that I think most or all Wheel of Time fans would enjoy.

Do you also like sci fi? I think the best and most romantic books that I read last year (outside of straight up romance novels) were all sci fi books.

Welcome!
It took me just about a year to read through the series and the prequel. Take your time and enjoy this incredible story! I can also attest to WOT dreams

Welcome to TarValon.Net! :D

If you want Brandon Sanderson but not a full series, he just released Tress of the Emerald Sea (link is to his shop but it's available elsewhere in other formats). I haven't read it yet (even though I own it), but I've read almost all of his other stuff and fell in love with it, so I'm sure this one will be great.
Thanks I'll check that out!! :)

It's wonderful! It might even be my favourite of his.

Best sci-fi I read last year was The Darkness Outside Us by Eliot Schrefer.

This Is How You Lose The Time War is an enemies-to-star-crossed-lovers book. It captured my heart last year. It's short, so I ended up reading it twice, once for a book club and once when I was feeling really down and needed a comfort read.

Gideon the Ninth and it's sequels are...romantic in a very unhinged way. In fact, everything about that series is unhinged. But I love it nonetheless.

Hi!
Nice to meet you all :) I'm a student from Sweden doing the final year of my masters degree

I'm already trying to decide on what to read after I finish the series (and prequel). I've heard a lot of good stuff about Sanderson's other books, but I would also maybe like to read some stand alone fantasy, so that starting it doesn't have to feel like as big a undertaking. I've been thinking about The Priory of the Orange Tree, anyone have any other tips?

Welcome to Tar Valon!

You don't have to answer this if you don't want, just curious what your Master's Degree major is?

I'd recommend you read Gilgamesh, (Stephen Mitchell translation) if you have not read it before. It is the oldest known book in the world (I think) 4500 years old, but it has strong fantasy elements in it (including a mythical forest like creature). I doubt most people would call it fantasy genre, but it is a fantasy mythos type story imo. It is standalone and a short read, plus it is quite fascinating to read the oldest known book in humanity.

Wow, that's an exciting feeling! I remember it fondly. :giggle I sometimes even get it again when I'm re-reading, even though I know what's coming. Welcome to Tar Valon!

Hello and welcome!

Unfortunately, I don't have any good standalone fantasy recommendations, but if you're a fan of Sci-Fi, I might recommend Amped or Robopocalypse, both by Daniel H Wilson. Amped is a standalone, and Robopocalypse has a sequel, but both are fairly quick reads.

Welcome to TarValon.Net! If you want a low-stakes fantasy to cleanse your palette after reading Wheel of Time, I'd highly recommend Legends and Lattes by Travis Baldree!
