At first I thought, "That's how many days in a year!" and then realized I transposed the numbers in my brain and it's actually much larger than that. :lol

I done goofed up. Thankfully the good good forum mods have got my back. I'll leave the blank post as a memorial to my woolheadedness.
If you're curious, (@Nebka Galyn @Fern Al'Thorn) pm me for my email.

    Mod hat:
Seeing as this thread is clearly marked as a RE-read, there is no real need of spoiler tags. Anyone who have not read the books are reading this thread at their own risk ;)

    /mod hat off

I'm feeling a lot more sympathy for the Dursleys this time around, especially Petunia.
That is to say, still not a lot, but more than last time.

It can’t have been easy for them. Having a baby dropped in your lap unexpectedly is more than kind of a big deal. They handled it beyond terribly, but it still would have been a huge change for them and a change that goes against everything they want from life - normalcy. Besides that, they *did* feed and clothe him for all those years. Not well, but it did happen.

What I want to know is how they were never reported for neglect. Harry and Dudley were the same age and attended the same school, Dudley was... very well fed, Harry was skinny. Dudley had pristine, fitted clothes, Harry had worn hand-me-downs and boken glasses. Dudley had new everything, toys, bikes, games, etc. while everything Harry had was worn out and broken. It doesn’t seem hard to realize that the Dursleys aren’t treating him appropriately.

I think at the time this was set, emotional abuse was very underreported, at least in America. Not sure about England. But Harry didn't have marks on him, was never beaten, was never denied food, was never left without proper supervision. He was skinny, yes, but the text seems to indicate he was just naturally a skinny boy. He wasn't allowed to over-indulge like Dudley (he probably wouldn't have anyway) but he wasn't underfed. (come to think of it, there was probably some genetics at play in their size: remember Petunia was very skinny, too. Maybe the Evans family just tended towards slim and the Dursleys tended towards heavy. Of course, they're fictional and I'm probably over-thinking it.)

I feel bad for young Petunia. I image she and Lily were close as children. Probably played together a lot and expected to attend the same secondary school. And then Lily went to a different school and they were apart for most of the year, and when she did come home, she was different and special and was mum and dad's favorite and Petunia couldn't relate at all to anything her sister was doing and magic was probably scary for an 11 yr old muggle. Growing up in her sister's shadow with a healthy dose of "do you want to build a snowman."

Excellent point! On one hand, it would ruin JKR's ability to show Harry as an abused orphan! But, staying within the story, up to a point people turn a blind eye and not notice. When they do notice, the Dursleys had stories about his strangeness. Criminally incurable. They spun rumors such that even the kids at school were afraid of him. But, the Dursleys could then say that they were doing the best anyone could.

I don't think it was Lily doing magic so much as the magical world itself. Lily was kind to her sister. On the other hand Snape's biases showed through, Hogwarts rejected her application, and James acted cruelly and arrogantly to her and Vernon. These were not the people Petunia wanted to associate with.

True. I didn't mean to imply that Lily intentionally froze her sister out, but she became part of a world Petunia could never enter, and being an outsider is tough.

Also, I want to know what on earth Dumbledore and McGonagall were thinking, leaving a 1 yr old alone outside unsupervised for two hours, without even so much as a protection charm. What if he woke up and crawled out of the basket? What if someone else found him first? Plus, what about the weather? October 31,1981 in Surrey was mid-high 40's F (around 9C). (I looked it up) That's kinda chilly for an infant.
As a mother of a similarly aged boy, I'm appalled.
