Heehee, indeed. :D Hooray!

Everybody sure seems terribly nice; it's a wonderful thing. So many established communities are really, really insular and make it hard for a new person to get their feet under them; it's great seeing so many people being willing to reach a hand out to a newcomer. :) And, haha, a little thwacking (...and jarring?) in good humor is always fun. :D

I'm always a little shy about poking a specific person unless I've interacted with them at least a bit, but it's good to know it's there!

Our DnD group is actually currently running a superheroes game (DC's system; we just converted from Marvel's), but we've had DnD games of various editions running for most of the past... Six? Years. Goodness, I hadn't actively realized it'd been that long! It's only a once-monthly game, though.

Yay for new campaigns in familiar settings!! That sounds fun! What kind of character did you roll up this time? :)

I love gaming! See, you've already found common threads here :)

I'm joining a DC themed Mutants and Masterminds game soon when the dm switches from Star Wars. I'm also in a Vampire the Dark Ages game, and I'm running a Pathfinder game.

And when it comes to creation we normally do 4d6 drop the lowest, reroll ones.

Unless I'm feeling old school... then you go Stat by Stat with 3d6 and hope you can play the class you want with the stats you get.

Indeed! :D it's pretty awesome.

That sounds like a fun variety of games!! A lot easier keeping them straight when they're so diverse, IMO; I was once in two different 3.5 campaigns, playing a cleric (I usually do), and that got a little odd, lol.

I actually haven't played Pathfinder yet; I'm a very, very inexperienced DM (ran one one-shot once), and none of the local DMs I know seem interested in running it -- it's all 3.5 and 4, when it's DnD. I feel like I ought to play in it sometime, just to get a feel for what it's like! Do you like running it? More than 3.5/4, or about the same?

I dislike the feel of 4ed gameplay. I understand some of the rule changes, but not my cup of tea.

3.5 and pathfinder are pretty similar (lots of people call pathfinder 3.75). If you are familiar with 3.5, switching to pathfinder shouldn't be too much of a jump. It's been so long since I played 3.5 that I'm having a hard time remembering the differences, but basically it was a lot of simplification, getting rid of redundancy, adding some cool character customization options, things like that.

Also, I like rolling your stats in order precisely because it forces you to play what hand you're dealt (er... what numbers you roll?). I wish we could have done 4d6, but still, it's easy to get into the pattern of always playing the same kind of character. I use role playing less as an escape mechanism and more as a method of investigating different personalities, ideals, etc, if that makes any sense. So I like being pushed into a particular role that I may not have chosen on my own (for example, I would never have chosen to play a paladin, but that's what I got last campaign, and it ended up being tons of fun exploring how to maintain both an extremist ideology and remain a functional member of society).

That's fair; in a lot if ways, 4E feels more like playing a JRPG in person than it feels like DnD. I like it, but I like JRPGs (including the meticulous grindy bits) as well -- and I have to admit that it's a very different experience than 3.5 and 2.5 (which, of course, have some big differences, too, though, IMO, less than between 3.5 and 4). The one unambiguously good change, IMO, about 4E is that first-level characters are actually useful; too often in 3.5 and earlier, I felt that there just wasn't a lot of point in playing a character below level 3, due to too few hit points, skills, spells, etc.

I've heard the 3.75 analogy before; that's a big part of why I'm interested in trying it out, if I can arrange it. :)

I definitely see your point wrt rolling stats in order, and that definitely makes sense as a good way to get exposure to each class and many possible sets of personalities and goals. :) I'm mostly exploring in a slightly different way -- there is a huge variety of characters one can make in one class (you can easily have several clerics in a given party before their powers start to overlap, etc), and I like the idea of trying every combination I can think of under each branch. :) Depth first instead of breadth first, if you will.

Also, I literally laughed out loud at the extremist ideology line, heh. My group has a habit of referring to Lawful Good as being, er, the less euphemistic version of "Lawful Stick Up Your Butt"...

:rofl that's awesome. Yeah, pretty much. Though my character definitely walked the line of what is allowed of a paladin, and probably crossed it a few times, but we have a pretty chill DM who lets you fudge the lines if there's a good RP reason to do so.

Hello, Anika Sedai! Thank you for the welcome! :D

I am definitely a video game fan, for sure. Some, I play (JRPGs, the Zelda series, Diablo, the Mario games, etc), some I watch (Assassin's Creed, Mass Effect, etc), some I play co-op (Rock Band!!!, the Mario Galaxy games, etc). :) Do you have any particular favourites?

Also, I have to say, the first text quote in your signature is one of my life mottos. :)
