Hello, Tar Valon!

Yes, it's another newbie. :) I found your library first, ages ago, and long before I realised that, hey, there's a whole site and community connected to it earlier today. I've spent the past few hours wandering through the Membership Manual and related topics before taking the plunge and joining; I like to know what I'm getting myself in for!

Anyway! On to the mini-questionnaire:

1. Favorite WoT character and why?

Oh, god, you're asking the hard ones first?! That's a little mean. How could I possibly decide? I love Egwene, for being a butt-kicking, go-getting, no-nonsense-accepted woman of no little will. I love Elayne, for herself, because she's trying so hard to live up to everything she thinks she should be. I love Mat, for his sense of humour and willingness to just say, "Burn it, I'll give it a try." And I want to be Cadsuane and Verin's lovechild when I grow up; their combined awesomeness may be too much for one mortal body to bear, though.

2. How did you find us?

Er, as mentioned above, I found the library first -- very helpful for remembering tiny details while doing your nth reread in honour of AMoL coming out (and finally convincing my husband to start his first read-through! Everybody with me now: "D'awww...") -- and happened to click a 404'd link that redirected me to the main page... which told me about everything else you guys have here!

3. What do you do (student, job, etc)?

I'm a stay-at-home mother to an almost-one-year-old son. He's the best baby in the entire world. :) I won't bore you with details on that score (unless you ask, lol).

4. Favorite book/author (other than WoT)?

Another hard one! I have several... I've been a Heinlein fan since before I was reading novels on my own; my dad used to read me Podkayne of Mars and others of his Juveniles for bedtime stories. They're not perfect (and are, indeed, quite dated, both for their technology and for their social commentary), but I still enjoy them. I'm a big fan of Michelle Sagara (aka Michelle West); she has a beautiful way to turn a phrase that is just poignantly perfect, and from her blog, she's a really nice lady, too. I'm also a fan of John Scalzi, whose works I first read on my honeymoon (snuggly beach reading is the best!).

5. Anything you need help with?

Um, figuring out where and how to get started now that I've posted this? :) Jump in both feet first? Lurk a while? PM someone chosen at random from the 'Superfriends' list? Pop into the IRC channel when I can? All of the above? Something else entirely?

:welcome Elorenya! Your name is my name but mixed up and with a couple of letters to spare :look:

I'd say you're welcome to be yourself, so if lurking for a while is more your style no one will think badly of you for it! I'm always happy to receive visitor messages/PMs too.

Have fun exploring!

Wow, thank you for the warm welcome, everyone! :D

Glad to hear that it's okay to poke around as much as it is to read a bit... :)

Hello other El from Seattle who likes Heinlein and D&D (saw your post in my thread!). I feel like I know you already :D

Well, as you gathered I'm new(ish) here too (though this is my second go around). Every is super duper nice, even the ones who thwack you and put people in jars (which I don't fully understand yet, but it's a very amusing visual).

Most people are more than happy to receive visitor messages (there's a nice sticky on these forums explaining how to do that if you're not sure). You can just chat or ask specific questions you don't necessarily want to post in a thread or whatever.

Are you currently playing a D&D campaign? I just ended a pathfinder campaign and am about to start another one. Same DM, same world, new characters. I'm excited!

Heehee, indeed. :D Hooray!

Everybody sure seems terribly nice; it's a wonderful thing. So many established communities are really, really insular and make it hard for a new person to get their feet under them; it's great seeing so many people being willing to reach a hand out to a newcomer. :) And, haha, a little thwacking (...and jarring?) in good humor is always fun. :D

I'm always a little shy about poking a specific person unless I've interacted with them at least a bit, but it's good to know it's there!

Our DnD group is actually currently running a superheroes game (DC's system; we just converted from Marvel's), but we've had DnD games of various editions running for most of the past... Six? Years. Goodness, I hadn't actively realized it'd been that long! It's only a once-monthly game, though.

Yay for new campaigns in familiar settings!! That sounds fun! What kind of character did you roll up this time? :)

Definitely feel free to send me a message if you want to chat about anything, but I totally understand. I always feel weird sending people messages out of the blue. Usually I'll only do it if I have something specific to talk about.

For the new campaign I rolled up a rogue. Our DM does it old school style, roll 3d6 in order to get your stats. He did allow us to swap 2 stats if we wanted. I ended up with a pretty good dex, but a chr of 6! It's going to be really interesting pulling that off, especially since I was a high chr paladin in our last campaign. Should be fun to mess around with other party members and insult them all the time. :D

Wow, 3d6! Hardcore! I don't think I've ever had a DM not at least allow 4d6 drop the lowest, with free stat assignment out of the number pool you roll. :) I hope you guys have fun! It definitely sounds like it'll be new and different, at least!

I understand completely! I'm never one to just randomly PM people, although I love receiving random PMs and visit messages myself! Everyone here is super friendly, though, so (as you've already heard like 20 times already) feel free to PM people (myself included!) or send us visit messages if you have questions or just want to chat. :)

That campaign sounds like fun, Eluial! But definitely hardcore on the stats. :brown-blink: I haven't played in a while, so I actually can't remember what our DM would have us roll for stats. :\ I played a lot in college and absolutely loved it and I miss it so much! One of my friends here is starting a campaign within the next few weeks, though, and I am super excited to start up again!! :joy (I actually brought my gaming dice with me when I came to Japan in the hopes that I'd meet people who'd want to play too :look: )

Oh, and I definitely have to agree with you on Egwene, Mat and Verin being awesome!! :D (with Elayne and Cadsuane, I either love or hate them depending on the scene  )
