As long as it's long-form, sequential art storytelling it pretty much comes under the same header in my opinion.

I can't believe nobody has said:

    Akira
    Ghost in the Shell

I'm not particularly in love with either, but they're really good places to start dipping into the whole genre. Ghost in the Shell is absurdly complicated, but totally brilliant; fan service more than most graphic novels, which can be off-putting (or a turn-on, I suppose, but I find it distracting).

For manga my favorite is Angel Sanctuary, but it's 20 volumes that each run at $10 a piece, which is a slap in the face. Great storyline of good-guy demons and bad-guy angels. Last time I looked, Barnes and Noble doesn't carry it anymore either, but Amazon/Kindle is a fine option.

One of my favorite mangas is Blame!, a cyberpunk manga. Unfortunately, the serie is out-of-print in English. Personally I have the serie in French, and the serie is still available in French.

Also, one of the gloomiest and dark mangas I've read is Earl Cain and its sequel Godchild.

as far as manga is concerned it depends what your into but based on the original post you probably prefer action based stories so my recommendations will be of little use since mine are mostly all romantic comedies with sometimes very little action other then misunderstandings but yeah if it's romcom manga I can tell you loads of recommendations, but as far as action goes maybe Rosario+Vampire or Cardcaptor Sakura (keep in mind though that they are still heavily romance influenced, but Rosario+vampire by season 2 of the manga starts to have some really cool looking fight scenes but the first series was more bad guy of the week style story telling and didn't pick up to the end) sorry I was not much help

but as far as graphic novels go perhaps the kick-ass series of graphic novels? there quite interesting

I have a hard time getting into super hero graphic novels (I love the movies but I seem to loose something in the novels) but I really enjoy reading Death Note and Ramna 1/2.
