I'm at the 7th Book. I didn't see any gay character in WOT. :tug That makes me sad even I live in the country where the muslim population is %90. I really want to see a Maiden's love to another Maiden or two WhiteCloaks' love for eachother. Is there any gay relationship between characters? :kiss

When you're at the 7th book you must have read about pillow friends.

I'm not sure if it is specifically in book 7, but pillow friends are mentioned more than once.

There's a lot to read between the lines, Agea.

Gay relationships are pretty subtle in the books, but RJ tried.

Certainly "pillowfriends" are a term meant to convey female/female sexual activities, although not necessary "lesbian" people if you get what he meant.

Good example is Siuan and Moraine who were "pillow friends" in their younger days.

In some ways RJ seems to treat these things as a phase people go through, but for a man his age he did try.

RJ did say that there was a sexual component to pillow friends
"Pillow friends are not just good friends. Oh, they are that, too, but they also get hot and sweaty together and muss up the sheets something fierce. By the way, pillow friends is a term used in the White Tower. The same relationship between men or women elsewhere would be called something else, depending on the country"
We also know that many of the Reds find men distasteful, which does not make them gay, but for some, such as Galina, we do know they are.

In later books, there are occasional references, for example: but she didn't like the men that way. And such. But overall, I don't remember any male gay characters, only female :cheeseeni:

There were those 2 guys in Sheinar who always requested to work together. :cheeseeni: Can't recall their names right now...Nidao & Changu maybe? *dodges the trout for memory failure*

RJ put it pretty good as to why he didn't make it obvious who is/isn't homosexual.

Oh, I wanted to add something here because of gender stereotypes and so forth. Somebody asked me why didn't I have any, in another question and answer session, asked me why didn't I have any gay characters in the books. I do, but that's not my bag to bring out the question of gender stereotypes and the whole nine yards. And they're just running around doing the things that they do and you can figure out who some of them are. If you want to help them, I don't care. It's not the point if they're gay or not gay, okay?

Robert Jordan

For jofraz, I have gay and lesbian characters in my books, but the only time it has really come into the open is with the Aes Sedai because I haven't been inside the heads of any other characters who are either gay or bi. For the most part, in this world such things are taken as a matter of course. Remember, Cadsuane is surprised that Shalon and Ailil were so hot to hide that they had been sharing a bed even knowing how prim and proper Cairhienin are on the surface. Well, for many it is just on the surface.

Oh and there an upcoming gay male character in A Memory of Light

Pillow friends are not gay, I think.
They are just a more intimate form of friendship.

Yes and no.

I agree its more of a friends with benefits thing, more than a "same sex relationship".

Also, in the later books (9 and on I think) there is a confirmed lesbian couple between a Sea Folk woman and a noble woman. So there are gay characters, but not that much or greatly pronounced...

Yes I've just read the 9th book. And They mentioned two Aes Sedai in Tar Valon were doing things secretly. They thought they might be pillow friends and there is nothing wrong with it. That was cool :joy

It's mentioned a couple of times that it is often seen as a thing for Novices, but grown women aren't really expected to do so

Gay characters are definitely hinted at through the books from pillow friends (stated fairly emphatically) to the two Shienarians who always wanted to work with each other. I thought RJ did a pretty good job of making it seem common place, not in-your-face, and a really good type of book for, say, getting sheltered, conservative, homeschooled teens to open their minds a bit about the gay community. :look:
