I always found being instructed to introduce oneself about the most anxiety-provoking thing possible, but I'll likely just go on lurking forever if I don't take a deep breath and do it. And so.

I'm 32, Australian, and when I like something, I tend to become obsessive very quickly and very thoroughly. When I was about thirteen, this was The Wheel of Time for me. I had almost no regular internet access at the time outside of school assignments, so the books were the beginning and end for me. I was looking for long novels and specifically a very long series at the library (I've always been a bibliophile) and it fit the bill. I did re-read all the books that had been released thus far less two years later, but my interest then flagged whilst waiting the newer novels and I only recently read to completion. Finally. Was spurred to do so by the television show, it must be said, which I gravitated towards out of major nostalgia but also Rosamund Pike.

I don't have hobbies, per se, but I read almost as many books as I buy, am very into mythology and folklore, etymology, word and logic puzzles, and spending far too much time on forums and social media obsessing over actresses (and their characters), especially those playing sapphic roles. Apart from that, I work a not enjoyable job, try to avoid getting buried by mental health issues, and listen to a lot of music and podcasts.

So hi. Salut (And yes, that's almost the extent of my knowledge of other languages. Thanks, Christie/Poirot, for providing the goods.)

Welcome to Tar Valon, Ciann! What sorts of word and logic puzzles do you like? I'm a daily Wordle/Quordle/NYT Spelling Bee person, and I do a lot of logic puzzles on Sporcle and puzzlebaron.com. :)

Welcome to Tar Valon, Ciann! :joy I've re-read the series a few times, despite my ADHD, because it's soooo long. My brain has time to forget details and rest before the next one.

Thank you! I'm a little old school, honestly, because my love stemmed from my father's love of the same. I usually go for grid logic puzzles (sometimes on puzzlebaron!) mostly in-app or in a book from the newsagency. I'm also a sucker for traditional crosswords, clueless crosswords, and nonograms. I did try Wordle and the variants out but found that my brain tended to freeze up and only spit out about seven different five letter words. Which kind of hindered progress, lol.

Hi! It's a chunky ol' thing, that's for sure. It was definitely a huge part of the appeal at the time, but it was much easier this time around due to apps/internet saving me having to flick to the glossary to check out characters' names every five seconds... I'm blessed in having quite good concentration, which comes in handy. My first re-read when I was about fifteen was actually due to my family forcing a family holiday wherein we spent 75% of each day travelling in a car to our next stop. So I was basically wolfing down a WoT novel every day, which was kind of fun but also heavy.

Welcome Ciann!

Thank you very much!

Welcome!

Didn't need it anyway, tbh... And thank you!

Thank ye very much! And heh. It's the most awful thing, truly. "List an interesting fact about yourself". Um, nope, nothing. Zilch. "Fine. Tell me your name." My what? Name? Ummmm. Yes. I have one. 1990. Damn. Name, right? Let me see. I wrote it down somewhere to prepare. The internet is much easier in that I can actually consider and think and put pen to metaphorical paper before letting it out into the world.

Thanks! Happy to be here.

Mythology was my gateway into history, I guess, but it also just remains one of my favourite things in general. I also love love love retellings and would happily purchase almost all of them if I had the funds. Greek was always what I gravitated towards most. I started with this baby when I was maybe seven or eight, and I still have it, almost destroyed cover and all.

It had a really good mix of everything, but I did end up being that kid who, for fun, would write down all the Greek/Roman equivalent names (and respective details about them) over and over again. It also tied in really neatly with a lot of my love for etymology, tbh. My brother was the big Norse fan in the family, and I always had a soft spot for Celtic as well, given a lot of my family background.

That sounds like me, I used to make lists as well :giggle

Retellings are a favourite of mine too. I absolutely love Circe and The Song of Achilles by Madeleine Miller. Retellings of fairytales and folklore is even better

Welcome!!! I am a mythology fan, as well. I love all types but I think Egyptian may be a favorite and one I want to learn more about.

Have you read American Gods? It is my absolute favorite book and such an eclectic mix of different cultures mythological beings and such. So good!

Welcome Ciann, lovely to meet you! :hug

I love mythology and folklore too, always gravitated towards anything involving fairies and plants - especially if it's local but I'll happy with any flavour of weird and wonderful really :)

Welcome to Tar Valon! I’m also big into mythology (of all cultures) and a huge fan of logic puzzles and word games. Sadly I don’t make much time for those these days.

Welcome to TarValon.Net! :D

Mythology and language were two subject I really loved in school, so when I chose to do a Classical Studies degree in college the history part came along in the package. It also expanded my knowledge from just Greek and Roman into Egyptian territory as well.
