The "relationship" that I hated the most in the series, besides Perrin and Faile, was Mat and Tylin. I don't want to get on my soapbox, so I will just say, that wasn't a relationship, that was rape, and if you don't think so, simply switch the genders and see if it seems acceptable to you.

I totally agree. During my most recent reread, I was disgusted with her treatment of Mat. And how everyone knew it was going on and thought it was funny... so wrong!

Aside from the ethical aspect ... I view this relationship in the "ta'veren" pull aspect of WoT. Rand needed his three ladies; Perrin needed the falcon and eagle; and Mat needed Tylin to meet Tuon. They were threads drawn to the ta'veren to help them fulfill their purpose in the pattern. That is neither good or bad; or even emotional. But such is the pattern.

Mat's relationship with Tylin started off with some pretty devious and cruel tactics by Tylin. But in the end, Mat was fond of her. When killing the gholam, Mat was screaming vengeance for Tylin, not an indicator that he viewed their relationship from the viewpoint of a rape victim.

So because he came to terms with it and wasn't traumatized for life, it was ok? So if a female was in a similar situation, it would be considered no bfd, all because she was horrified because the person died in a way that is horrifying? Yes he needed to be in the palace in order to meet Tuon, but he was there not because Tylin wanted him, but because Elayne and Nynaeve brought him to the palace. It wasn't his "relationship" that kept him in the city when the Seanchan came. It was a wall falling on him. So yes, the pattern kept him there and it was necessary for him to be there, but it was not necessary for him to be threatened and forced at knife point, and by her position as ruler of the nation he was in. His making the best of it does not lessen or take away the fact that it was rape. He told her no. No is not up for debate, and force does not always mean physically overpowering someone.

I don't mean to get all personal and stuff...

But when I was in high school, I was raped... years later he was murdered. I was sad. I was also confused by my sadness... It doesn't mean it wasn't rape just because I was sad he was murdered...

I didn't like a lot of the relationships. I did feel neatly pairing up nearly everyone - and some with horribly inappropriate partners - was on the ridiculous side. A few pairings as the novels went on, I didn't mind - one or two romances I even liked; it happens. But didn't anyone have anything better to think about with Tarmon Gai'don on the horizon??!?

As per the OP, Thom and Moiraine was one of the worst, IMHO.
