A question was raised about the name “Chair of Rebuke,” a new role within the Department of Moderation. We are addressing that in conjunction with the paired role, the “Seat of Pardon.” Some members raised a concern that the term “rebuke” had negative connotations. When the Community Feedback thread was made, we locked it initially for internal conversation due to the fact that I was unavailable.

We had asked in the thread that anyone who had suggestions for names to email moderation@tarvalon.net or keeper@tarvalon.net. After 10 days, we received no emails with alternate name suggestions but did receive feedback from multiple members that they liked the names. We also received feedback with counter arguments for not changing the names.

In Survey #2, the community was asked how they feel about the use of Wheel of Time themed names within our administrative structure. The majority of members in our community favor such names. “Chair of Rebuke” and “Seat of Pardon” come from the Wheel of Time’s Tower Law in the White Tower. In the books, they play the roles of prosecutor and defender.

In our version of these two roles, the Chair of Rebuke looks over the rules and applies them to the moderated incident at hand. The Seat of Pardon talks with the moderated member and gets their side of the story about the current incident. To emphasize, the Seat of Pardon is the only role that will reach out to talk with moderated members; there will never be a time where someone is contacted by the Chair of Rebuke and asked for information. Once both Chair and Seat have independently reached their respective conclusions, they collaborate together and come to a compromise on action. Then they include the Director of Moderation in the collaboration, and decide together.

After taking into consideration the initial complaint, subsequent feedback, recent survey results, and the fact that the Chair of Rebuke will never be interfacing with members in the capacity of that role, we have decided to keep the names “Chair of Rebuke” and “Seat of Pardon.”

Moderator note: SA is a heavily moderated space. Several members seem to not remember/not care about that as of late. If you do not like this decision and wish to complain, do so in CF -- not here.

Not a complaint, but i have a couple of points of clarification I'd like to ask. Am I OK to do that here or would you prefer I raise a thread in CF?
