Exactly. They need to be in the very first episode/season as major characters. They need to play extras as Emond's Fielders. They need to play Moiraine, and Lan, and Bran al'Vere, and Bayle Domon, and Min, and Morgase, and Elayne's brothers, and the major arcana Aes Sedai.

LotR had some unknowns play major roles (Viggo Mortensen was largely unfamiliar before his role as Aragorn), and the seasoned actors like Ian McKellen and John Rhys-Davies were excellent choices to help act as teacher figures. If Viggo played Lan he would bring a LOT to the show, but there's the issue that people unfamiliar with the books would think it's a LotR spinoff if a well known LotR actor was involved, especially if there is already a LotR show in the works through the same company.

I like the Idea of Jenson Ackles playing one of Elayne's brothers. Not too old and later on they play major roles in the books.

My reasoning behind some of the choices is that yes, we're all in agreement that the main young people need to be played by unknowns, BUT a show like this just isn't going to have much of an existing fan base when it first starts, other than those of us who have read the books. If there are massively popular celebrities from the sci/fi-fantasy genre but who have also branched out into other genres playing the older characters and the side characters who interact with Rand, Mat, Perrin, Egwene, and Nynaeve, then I think the show would be able to go a long way right from the beginning, more so than not having those names attached. There are characters who have a certain grittiness about them because they've spent years in that world fighting the things that Rand and company have to learn about as they go. Seasoned, well-known actors would do a lot for those parts.

If they are unknowns they need to look and act SO MUCH like the characters that most people are in agreement that they are too perfect for the role I could see a really good unknown playing Mat if they were good enough and looked the part

Timothy Omundson could be a definite option for multiple older teacher characters: Tam al'Thor, Taim, or even Lan.

But especially Lews Therin, because he is terrific as Cain in Supernatural and I could really see him as a slightly mad character in WoT.

Maybe the dude as Gawain. Come to think of it, the chick would be a great Min. Except purists would scream because she’s Asian American. Eyeroll.
