OOOO the last of the Beka Cooper books was so good! So sad, but so good!

An old duet I LOVED as a 6th grader (and often re-read into high school) was the Juniper Series by Monica Furlong. A third book came out in 2005 but I haven't read it yet as it's not in my library system and not on kindle :(

OK, I swear, out of my entire group of friends, and the entire class at school, there were two of us who read Tamora Pierce. When I wanted her new books, I had to order them in to bookshops as they wouldn't stock them normally!

They're really popular here in the Midwestern US. I've read everything Pierce has ever written. She's so funny!

They're pretty popular here on the East coast as well...
And yes, the last Beka Cooper was so awesome and so sad! I cried. :)

Both Lene Kaaberböl and Tamora Pierce are quite well-known I thought? Or at least among my friends :p I read them both when I was little!

It seems to vary among my friends depending on when each person got into fantasy books, Zimone Sedai. I didn't realize there WAS a separate sci-fi/fantasy section in most bookstores and libraries until I was reading adult novels...it was some younger friends who told me about Tamora Pierce and got me interested.

thanks everybody for all these great suggestions.
I'm commenting so that I remember to check here back here! Once I get done with my re-read of Wheel of Time I am definitely going to check some of these authors out!

Heh, I saw the title of this thread, and my immediate thought was to mention Michelle West, only to find that Jas'yn Gaidin did so in the first post! :)

So now I need to mention someone else. I'll go with Lois McMaster Bujold and her Vorkosigan series. She's not unknown (she's a Hugo winner!) but not many people I know personally and haven't introduced myself seem to know her work. It's fun space opera stuff! :)

I like Bujould's Sharing Knife series. It was very subtle and sweet. Another author I remembered was James Clements and his Wit'ch Fire series.

I was gonna say Michelle West, but someone already said that! Props to a Canadian author!
Also Guy Gavriel Kay, another Canadian author. OMG if you have not read his books, do it! Ysabel was my least fav and it was amazing, he has a series of books, the Finnavar Trilogy (spelling may be off), which are amazing!

I loved Ysabel! It was so different from anything I've ever read! I also read his Tigana (amazing!) and I started the Finavar trilogy but haven't gotten far.

Has anyone else read Maggie Furey? I quite liked the Aurian series (I forget the proper name) though the ending was dire and she seemed to like introducing characters just to kill them. I started reading the Heart of Myrial trilogy, and although I know I finished it, I can't really remember what happened at the end :rofl

Yes, I love Maggie Furey! Can't seem to find any other name than "The Aurian Saga" But I do belive I've heard it been called "The Artifacts of Chaos" or something like that. Great series no matter the name :)

Maybe not an unknown author, but another favorite of mine is Anne Bishop. I love her Black Jewels series, and also enjoyed both the Tir Alainn and Ephemera series.

I asked my librarian if they had any books by Patrick Ness and she did not know who I was talking about. He wrote the Chaos Walking Thrillogy and it is about to be made into a movie!

Michael Scott Rohan - The Winter of The World books are great. A lot of the early (80s and early 90s) Star Trek authors were very good. Diane Duane and Vonda N. McIntyre.

Star Trek authors, totally! I read so many Trek books at the library, and I recall both of those names fondly. (I think I actually own a few Diane Duane books actually.)
