I write this with an extremely heavy heart.

This morning I discovered that our Tower bank account was overdrawn when it should not be. I immediately sent Riley, TarValon.Net's Shatayan/CFO and Chairman of the Board of Directors, a text to find out exactly what was happening. 3 hours later, Riley called me to say that he has been taking money from the Tower accounts apparently with the intention of repaying them to cover bills and personal expenses at home. I first contacted the Keeper, then Eleyan Sedai as a representative of the Board of Directors to let them know what was happening.

I drove directly to the bank, have removed Riley from our account and as soon as the latest statement has fully posted, will close it completely. I brought our balance back to zero, so we are no longer overdrawn. I have also changed the password on our paypal account which is also at a zero balance.

While I was in the bank, Serenla Sedai removed Riley's forum access, and changed the password to the emails he had access to and gave the new password to myself and Leora Sedai. Riley also sent in his letter of resignation as an Officer and from the Board along with an admission of guilt to the officers and Board of Directors, along with a plan for repayment.

Due to the extreme nature of his actions and his letter, I have chosen (with concurrence of the officers and board of directors) to enact a ban of Riley, effective immediately, from TarValon.Net rather than putting him before the Hall of the Tower. There is no question that he has performed the above actions.

Moving forward, Eleyan Sedai called for an emergency meeting of the Board of Directors which will happen tomorrow night where they will discuss how we look to proceed. We are fully committed to recovering our funds, have engaged an attorney, and are exploring our options. At this point Riley is fully cooperating with us.

For those of you going to Fall Ball next weekend, Serinia and Yelenia will lead further weekend specific conversation in the Fall Ball forum, so please head that direction to talk about what *you* would like to do in the face of all this.

This thread will not be locked because all of us deserve to express our feelings. I know this will cause unease, distrust, anger, sadness and a whole range of other emotions. I can't tell you all how shocked and appalled I was when I saw the account this morning and started to realize the full scope of what this meant and I know many of you all share those feelings. This affects every single one of us. The Board will obviously be electing a new chairman tomorrow night, so please bear with us as we process the information we have and try to get all of it pulled together to start moving past the immediate damage control phase. We have Serenla Sedai who works in the banking industry reviewing our procedures and coming up with recommendations to make sure this cannot happen again. We will update you as we can and answer any questions you may have so please don't hesitate to ask either here or via email.

Well now isn't that a turn up.

A real pity to see someone who always been so reliable acting in such a deceitful way to those he's been friends with for years.

Unfortunate and disappointing, but I see it as survivable.

I have faith the Fall Ball crew can pull together and help each other figure out what we'll do. We'll find a way to still have a good time despite the setback.

I am absolutely devistated by this turn of events. I think "devistated" is the right word.

It has been a very difficult afternoon, and I am so impressed with how people have been facing this serious issue. A lot of communication and administrative work happened very quickly. Viv personally went down to the bank, brought us up to a zero balance with her own funds, has been talking with her Execs, the Board, our Attorney and to Riley. I want to thank her, the Keeper, the Board of Directors, our IT, Membership and Events and Conferences Directors for their immediate mobilization. We have got a rough time ahead of us, but I think we have a strong team to help us make it through.

This affects all of us, and for many of us it affects us in conflicting and confusing ways. More than anything, I feel sad at this moment. Profoundly sad. I can't fix this.
But I can put my energy to getting us to the best outcome that we can. Then I'll deal with the personal stuff later.

Thank you for your help and your understanding.
The Tower remains unbroken.

I am so sorry to hear this, and so disappointed. Having for so long known many of you that're working so hard to rectify this situation, I've got full faith in your abilities to move forward from here.

Please let me know if I can help in any way.

:( It saddens me immensely to realize that even those I have always seen as having unimpeachable integrity can be tempted beyond their ability to resist. :(

I am very sad by this. Riley was always such a great guy, he even assisted me once when i was in need. I am very upset that this happened, and disappointed that Riley was responsible I feel betrayed. I can understand that he was having tough times, but his actions are very disappointing, especially within a community that has so many people helping each other though rough times.

On one hand i will miss Riley dearly, on another I feel so hurt i just don't know what to say.

Thank you Mother for using your personal funds to fix this, and thank you to the admins and execs an the board for your hard work.

If you ever happen to apply to be licensed as an attorney, one of the major components is taking a Professional Responsibility exam. In the course of the exam, and the classes you take before the exam the concept of not taking moneys used in a fiduciary trust for personal reasons. The reason for this is the reason, beyond the first ethical reasons is because while taking the money in may solve your temporary problem, the root cause of why you didn't have the money to begin with is still present. It is very very common for an individual to be in dire straights and to see money he or she has access to and think "I will just borrow it for a bit, and give it back later".

I, like many of you know Riley, have broken bread with him, and laughed with him. He has been a big part of what the site is. It is at this moment that we must remember that we should not allow ourselves to hate. The actions Riley took were wrong, and he will have to face the consequences of his actions. However, as a community this should be the time that we band together and we show strength at the most. We started from very humble origins and from the seed that was our camaraderie with one another we have grown into what we are now. Through this strength, and communal effort we can weather this storm as well.

I am speechless. I don't know what to think right now.

Is there a link where we can donate to help out?

This.

Rinwyn, your thought is so appreciated as is the sentiment behind it (and Atreyu’s post before it). At this time we are not planning to take donations, things need to settle first. Thank you and please hold on to that thought!

Atreyu conveyed it well. I was rather confused watching the Library change his information in front of my eyes without anything in announcements. I'm saddened by this news, a little heartbroken. Not for me but for what course has brought him and us to this. I believe we can move forward from this without tossing any hate around, it shouldn't be our nature. He will be missed, regardless of his actions. And I hope he knows and realizes this above all else.

If there is anything in my power to help, even if not part of the Fall Ball crew, please don't hesitate.
