Directors or Mistress/Master.

I have been thinking of this a lot lately, It is understanding that life gets the best of us. Why not create assistants to a job role. That way people can help, get training and contribute to all kinds of 'jobs' around the site.

Hi Syera!

Do you mean like a formal Assistant Director of Marketing (for example) who would have access to my email and act in my capacity if I were away?

I personally wouldn't be comfortable with that (on a Director level at all, or for many Administrators) for confidentiality/consistency reasons. I also don't really think it's necessary in a practical sense; Directors have a lot of assistance from their administrators and staff, and if they need to take an LoA they can ask Liz to step in. For admins...many assistant positions do exist, although to my knowledge very few to none of them have access to the admin email. I have two formal assistant positions in my Department alone, one of which we created just two weeks ago.

Does that help?

It does help, although it doesn't necessarily mean access to admin sensitive documents.
Just a helper or so on.

Maybe something like an intern for a small period of time, a shadowing if you will?

Sounds about right, with specific jobs that don't impede on another's privacy and security.

Could be interesting, might give people more confidence to apply if they know a general idea of how the position works :)

Could also be a barrier, though - "I've never gotten one of the assistant jobs, no sense in applying for the actual position." Even worse if it becomes a de-facto step towards becoming a Director/Admin.

Yeah, I would say if it was a thing each shadowing session would be only 2 weeks tops.

I mean, that's kind of what the admins are supposed to be, isn't it? I feel like that's how we do stuff in Marketing, anyway. Not sure about other Departments.

The thing is, you can actually just strike up a conversation and ask if you're curious about a position.

Good ways to be qualified are to spend time in that department, to be active, and to have related RL skills.

I admit I'm rather curious which position you would be interested in shadowing/want to know more about...

Imagine it like work experience or interning. Which you've all mentioned in some form or another. Well I don't mind which position. Finding where my skills lay and how I can fit in with that area would be good. Helping organize an event or assisting in advertising. I know I've been SM for a few years or so in different Ajah's. I suppose I've never been confident enough to sell myself and my strengths.

Recently something changed and I want to see what my potential is.

Then I would recommend watching SA for available positions and when you see one that is interesting, apply! Of you have questions about it, them sent them to the current position holder with Lireina CC'ed. :)

I know for my part inI always willing to talk and answer inquiries.

If you have a particular interest in a department, check in with their Director- there have been instances where there were roles that ended up being created out of a demonstrated need for such. Places like Tech, Outreach, Marketing and Mods (which I think you already volunteer in?) are always looking for new faces and ideas.

Ninya has good advice too. :D

Yeah I shall do that, I have to admit in making that post when slightly tipsy. I do still think it is a good idea and I have been a mod in the past. It was good at the time.

I'm glad you posted the question regardless, Syera Sedai. I was curious about specific duties as well. Titles like "________ Director" could mean anything depending on the org/company purpose. I imagine there are a lot of "hats" to wear on top of just getting teams what they need.

Hey there Polygnyn , I thought assistants to some would be useful. As it's been said a lot of people are concerned with privacy and security. A way possibly for JM's to be get experience without compromising their progression etc. It seems simple, but would require a lot of re working maybe.
A shadow work experience would be useful.
