I've been watching this television series and trying to start the actual books for the first time as of last week. However, my library's ebook system and I are currently working out some differences we seem to be having. :p Looking forward to eventually jumping into this discussion as well. ^^

Eta: So around which book do events start to significantly differ from the television series? Should I skip ahead to that book or simply enjoy the refresher?

The books are much more detailed and less "HBO'd". I would read from the very beginning. If you have a certain character you're fond of in the TV series, you'll get to be inside their head to learn more in the books.

    ^I completely agree.

The books are much more detailed, and some of the differences in the story lines start in the very first season and just keep building. I would advise starting with the first book. It will definitely be worth it.

Yeah, this is what I've done :) It is nice hearing each character's inner thoughts. About to finish the first book. Thinking about listening to another book in between each to break up the violence of the later books. But which series has yet to be determined.
