Re: 2015 Re-Readalong: The Shadow Rising Chapters 15-21

I think what Ryu means Mother, is that a scene like that would have gotten stronger reactions if Tylin was the male and Mat the female...

Just look at the reactions after this season of Game of Thrones :look:

Oh I mean that, but I respectfully disagree with The Mother in what she said and will leave it at that because this is not an appropriate place to discuss such polarized matters.

:look: Anyway...

Ryu, what you said earlier about "Bain and Chiad", I think of them the same way! :giggle

I love the introduction of the Sea Folk this week and Elayne's handling of Jorin. Clearly not what Jorin expected. I like seeing our girls redefine Aes Sedai. But why did Moiraine give them such sparse info? Did she just not know more and didn't want to admit it or was she trying to see how the girls would handle it or what?

I feel like Elayne STILL hasn't put two and two together, that Jorin reminds her of Aviendha because they can both channel.

Re: 2015 Re-Readalong: The Shadow Rising Chapters 15-21

@ Imzadi Hopewind: Plain no, they didn't. One of the many practically relevant things they were not taught at the Tower.
@ Megana Vallentin: Elayne has no idea yet that Aviendha can channel. Perhaps the penny drops when she sees Jorin at work. For Egwene, it will happen on Chaendar, when she feels Moiraine, Amys, Melaine, Aviendha yes, but Bair and Seana no.
When you have a feeling towards a person you meet, you usually assign it a cause - and "her being able to channel" is quite an unlikely one, so it's plausible to choose another one, even if somewhat weird (Egwene: "I feel a liking for Avi because she looks like a relative of Rand" - almost any Aiel would fit that loose description). At the Tower, with plentiful Channelers around, the feeling must have been disregarded as kind of background noise that comes with the place. However, discrimination should have been easy to teach, just no one cared.

It is something I think they know Intellectually, but have never actually experienced for themselves.

Chapter 21: Nice to see inside Moiraine's had! It's amusing how she is so convinced that Egwene must be heartbroken over Rand.

Re: 2015 Re-Readalong: The Shadow Rising Chapters 15-21

Ok, I'm really behind on posting my notes... though I have at least been keeping up on the reading. (even if WoT has taken a backseat this past month to the new Expanse novel by James SA Corey :look: )

Chapter 8:
-Elayne acts all incredulous that Rand would suggest that she and Egwene discussed their conversation ahead of time. How could you even consider such a thing? Do you imagine we would hand you around between us like a package?" I know she's just acting, but really, that's exactly what they did. Even with Min. They talk about passing him between them and whether Egwene will allow Elayne to have him... so yeah, they do actually hand him between them like a package. It's a little weird. :rolleyes
-Egwene briefly considers pushing Mat off the fence into the garden in the palace when he asks for help. :brown-blink: She seems to only decide against it because he might land on a gardener.
-Mat is very adamant that he will not use the ter'angreal doorway.

Chapter 9:
-Lanfear offers Rand Asmodean's assistance in learning to channel. Rand tells her that 'even if it were offered,' he'd refuse. He apparently changes his mind later. :p
-It's apparently blasphemy for darkfriends to say the Dark One's real name.
-Lanfear teases him with knowledge of the Choedan Kal. One sa'angreal for him and one for her.

Chapter 10:
-Lanfear doesn't have to see Saidin to be able to unravel it. Isn't that something we see is super dangerous later? Though I suppose a Forsaken can handle it. She's probably had lots of practice.
-
Now. The thought floated like crackling laughter on the rim of his awareness.
Seems like the first instance of Lews Therin's voice in Rand's head.
-It is kinda a crazy day for Rand. He thinks about how weird it is that Egwene apparently doesn't love him, but the daughter heir of Andor wants to kiss him at least and one of the Forsaken now claims to love him, too and is even jealous of Elayne.
-Rand mentions that Lanfear gave him the last piece to what he has to do without knowing it. Is that about the Choedan Kal?

Chapter 11:
-Despite how the Wise Ones are very strict with Egwene later and quick to tell her (and rightly so) that she doesn't really know much about Tel'aran'rhiod yet, Egwene actually is pretty humble here when it comes to judging her own knowledge of it. Elayne makes a comment about how they "do not know Tel'aran'rhiod as well as Egwene, or the rules of it" which may be true, but they do at least seem to have an appreciation of how dangerous it is and how little they know about it.
Elayne and Nynaeve thought she was so knowledgeable. She knew a few of the rules of the Unseen World, and knew there were a hundred, a thousand more of which she was ignorant.
-We see Elayne trying out ter'angreal which becomes more of an obsession of hers later on. She tests out the two dream ter'angreal taken from the Black Ajah.
-Egwene dreams of Aiel fighting each other and even throwing away their weapons and running, all of which we'll see before long. Mat wrestling a Seanchan woman (which happens quite literally), Perrin (as a wolf) fighting a man with a changing face (Slayer?), Galad becoming a Whitecloak and Gawyn burning with anger.
-Egwene sees a giraffe skeleton?
-"Perhaps a Wise One could teach her. If she could find one." That thought was all it took for her to actually find a Wise One to teach her.
-Do we know what the rule is governing which animals appear in the world of dreams and which don't? Or is it that the larger animals (i.e. horses not in their stalls) just don't dream themselves to be in their stalls so she wouldn't find them there?
-Egwene glimpses Birgitte
-Amys is quite generous in her offer to have Egwene come to the Waste to learn there.

Chapter 12:
-It really seems like a snap judgment for Egwene to suddenly decide she must go to the Waste. I realize she has to go and it does make sense that she'd want to learn... but it still seems like she came to that decision very suddenly as if it were no big deal to jump over to the Waste for a bit. She also assumes that Aviendha will want to come with her, not even asking her first when saying that Aviendha could accompany her. She's then a bit hurt when Aviendha says she doesn't want to.
-It's interesting that the Wise Ones sent a letter to Moiraine to ask Aviendha to come back to the Waste, rather than letting Aviendha know personally. (or telling Rhuarc to tell her) What else was in their letter to Moiraine?

Chapter 13:
-Trollocs attacking Myddraal. :brown-blink: Is that solely to do with ta'veren or Mat's luck? Or does that just happen sometimes? (but it happened right then because of Mat's luck)

Chapter 14:
-Berelain's desire to 'have' Perrin seems very sudden. :brown-blink: Seriously, where does it come from?

Chapter 15:
-Mat greatly overestimates how much Egwene learned in the Tower, thinking she's just denying how much she knows. I mean, yes, she probably does deny how much she knows, but she really doesn't know that much. She mostly just lucked out in that she's so strong and can pick up things so naturally.
-Do the snakes have a similar power to Min's? When Mat asks them a question, it says they studied the air above Mat's head. Reminds me of what Min can do, only they're always able to interpret what they see. Though I suppose it's a bit different. Min can see things that will happen, while maybe the Aelfinn can see what will happen if Mat does somthing first. I don't know, just thinking out loud. I feel like Min's ability might be related, though.
-By going to Rhuidean, Mat will have sidestepped his fate and those who want to kill him to keep that fate from being fulfilled. Is this referring to him 'dying' in Rhuidean and thus sidestepping his connection to the Horn of Valere?
-Is Mat able to bully a 4th answer out of them? :brown-blink: They answer three questions, but he yells at them, asks them what fate they're talking about and they give him a whole list of answers. Is that a fourth question then?

Aanddd... that's enough for now. I'll post the rest later.

Re: 2015 Re-Readalong: The Shadow Rising Chapters 15-21

TSR: 22

Rand's Party leaves Tear and head to a portal stone, leaving the HighLords and Ladies to do The Dragon's Will, there is a short discussion on the 1/5th and well, the stone is full of treasure most of which probably has not been touched in ages so screw the Highlords, and honestly 1/5th is not that bad, I would not exactly be happy with the Aiel for taking a 1/5th of my stuff after they beat the snot out of me, but in the situation I think you at least come out ahead by them not taking everything.

Rand also has to bully Rhuarc into telling him about the portal stone in Rhuidean, it is really the first time the Clan Chief seemed completely uncomfortable, eventually Rand decides on the symbols he needs with some assistance from Mat, and uses an Angreal to aid him in using the Portal Stone, the fat little man that Rand keeps with him for almost all of the rest of the story. I recall him using it in A Memory of Light.

TSR: 23

The Group arrives in the waste, Rand decides to go to Rhuidean, Mat goes with him, Aviendha and Moraine go in on their own, and I was a wrong and the wise ones do bring up Moraine going, though in their dreams they saw her bringing it up.

TSR: 24

Rand and Mat arrive in Rhuidean, Mat is iffy about going through but he has no real choice so he goes, inside is a partially completed city, Rand channels some water up through a fountain. It is interesting that there is actually a great deal of water under the wastes, Aiel apparently never thought of the idea of trying to dig wells. That brings up another thought, Aiel walk by this well on the way to the Pillars of light did they just not know what a fountain was? I suppose they don't I guess having never seen one in generations.

Then they find an Avendasora, in the Plaza, Rand goes into the Pillars of Light, and Mat goes through a second doorway and meets the Foxes, and gets 3 wishes. I can't believe there was not a part of the deal made that the Foxes would have to explain what the heck is going on. The Aes Sedai of the age of legends sure as heck didn't future proof things very well did they.

TSR: 25

And we enter the best part of the series, well the second best behind Ingtar's Death..or Third behind Verin's Death. Whatever I love this bit.

Vision 1: Rand sees the tradition of the Aiel going to Rhuidean begin, we see that the Aiel lost the reason why they don't use swords, that makes me question some of the time line here, The Aes Sedai who were with the Aiel are on the edge of death and presumably they were with The Aiel from the start? Or did they join in later? It seems strange for the White Tower to send Aes Sedai to the Aiel after they ended up in the Wastes, oh and The Clan Chiefs and Wise Ones see that there is water..underground, why did they never think to check the underground of the dream world, bad leaders of a people living in a wasteland.

Vision 2: A bit of the Aiel and the Jenn before they cross the Spine of the World, The Vision's POV is the grandfather of the first one, and it seems that this is Pre-white tower construction which would but it 2000+ years ago, How long exactly has the White Tower been in existence? I recall several Aes Sedai saying 3000.

Vision 3: The first Maiden of The spear is created here, taking the spear for her husband, I wonder if this is Pre or Post Prophecy of the Dragon, that actually brings up a whole big question of when did the Karaethon Cycle become a thing, it is old enough for it to be in the Old Tounge but it would be really strange to me if the Fortelling of the Dragon coming again would be very soon after he died, but we see things being set up for him returning really soon after the breaking.

Vision 4: And we see the creation of the Aiel as we know them, I love that each of these traditions come from something that in the time it was created by some one doing something that made complete sense at the time.

TSR: 26

Vision 1: Now we see the events that created The traveling people, it is strange that the hatred of the Traveling People stayed through the thousands of years between this and the present.

Vision 2: Not much to really discuss here, another step back seeing the Ogier, and how there were Aes Sedai who had an idea that Ishamael was not fully sealed. And that during the breaking even Aes Sedai were quite poor off, it seems it took some time for the White Tower Aes Sedai to get themselves formed and Organized.

Vision 3: Okay Callandor is a Sa'angrael of all 3 powers, and that it has a flaw/trap in it. Who made the sword that is not a sword? Can users of the One Power create items that interact with the True Power? Was the thing always meant to be a trap for The Reborn Dragon?

Another thing of note, we see the Eye of the World being planned, if the Amyrlin Seat is the watcher of the 7 seals, how could a position that was seemingly created after this scene, I imagine if there was an Amyrlin seat she would be very involved in the discussion over what to do about the Banner, Callandor and where to put the seals.

Last bit here: Apparently the Aiel, a large group of them surrounded one of the Male Aes Sedai who was going mad, and distracted him by singing. This right here should negate all of the Angst that any Wise one or Clan Chief might have about their ancestors following the way of the leaf. They had enough guts to stand up to someone who could kill them with the wave of a hand, and who DOES kill them with a wave of his hand, all of them bit by bit to the point that the last one was singing on their own for an hour.

I think that person needs nominated for the most hardcore person in the setting, a person on their own sings to an insane man, knowing that this man is very likely, like 99.99% likely to at some point murder you.

Vision 4: We see the song that the Traveling people are searching for, I wonder if this is a thing of the power? It does not seem to be since Ogier Treesong do something similar to the effect this song is supposed to have and since the POV character we are seeing this through is not a user of the one power.

He also finds out that the War of the Shadow is over, and goes to see his grandfather who served Lanfear, who was hanged by the townsfolk of the town they were staying in, even though apparently the Aiel are supposed to be some sort of protected class.

Vision 5: We see the bore being opened in the Dark One's Prision, and again we see that the Aiel are a protected class of some sort, the civilian who ran into Charn immediately changed his tone upon realizing that Charn was an Aiel.

So, did Lanfear know was she was unleashing? This is obviously after Lews Therin dumped her for Elyana so she is likely going down her path of obsession and insanity already, and who was the Male Aes Sedai she was linked with to open the bore? Was he one of the Forsaken? Did the Dark One give him a chance to join him along with Lanfear?

Did they use any Angreal?

Rand – So, how far up was Mat Hanging? Or does Rand just have a leap that would make Micheal Jordan jealous, also apparently Rand-Land has some version of CPR, that a Blacksmith knows.

Just think of how much your butt would hurt after a Blacksmith like Perrin or Master Luhan does what Rand does with Mat here, Mat now has his Ashandarai, and his Silver Foxhead, The blade of the spear is power made, and the Foxhead is something made from the power it seems since Elyane can replicate it later. Do the foxes just make what they gave him out of thin air? Or are they things that were traded to them in earlier ages, and if they are something traded to them, I wonder how they get it back later to give to him when the wheel turns back. Or if they are something made of thin air, what happens to them, or are there just an infinite amount of the spears somewhere in the world.

TSR: 27

So, I had a realization this time around something I had not thought of before. Shouldn't Machin Shin be sitting at the gate in tear until Rand leaves since it was following him in Book 2? or did it just get bored of waiting for Rand to come to a way gate? Or did fain order it to do something else?

Not a lot happens here Faile acts like a twit..and The Maidens apparently do not understand that one should not go off into the darkness here, since they try to get Perrin to go off with them, Maidens seem to lack perspective some times in the plot.

Re: 2015 Re-Readalong: The Shadow Rising Chapters 15-21

Ok, final notes from last week!

Chapter 16:

-As others have said, Faile makes me so angry here. :mad She made him swear by his mother and his mother's mother's, etc. just to manipulate him into getting back at Perrin! That's so mean to Loial. :( He obviously feels terrible about it. It even starts to make him angry which is a feat in and of itself. If you can make Loial angry you know you've gone too far. :indifferent:

Perrin's being a bit stubborn, too, but I can't really blame him for not wanting to give in to Faile's manipulation. I really find it hard to believe that Perrin actually likes her after this.
-And then she threw one of Loial's books at the door. D: Poor Loial!

Chapter 17:
-I'm so bad at imagining family trees. :facepalm Moiraine is Taringail's youngest half-sister and King Laman's niece...
-Moiraine is certain that Tanchico will not kill Thom. She must have gotten an answer to that effect from the Aelfinn. Perhaps it also told her about the relationship between the two of them. That had to help convince Thom to go to Tanchico, though. I know it's not the main reason he went, but if an Aes Sedai who can't (knowingly) lie can guarantee you won't die there, that's got to help.
-The Blight has retreated a couple miles. Because of Callandor? :scratch
-Siuan orders that Mazrim Taim be gentled as soon as he's captured. Unlike with Thom's nephew, the order definitely makes sense in this case. He's not just some unlucky man who can channel, but someone who's proclaimed himself the Dragon Reborn and killed numerous people. Nonetheless, Leane is understandably shocked at the unusual order.
-Leane even questions whether it's the right thing to help/influence the Dragon. It's amazing how ingrained the fear of men who can channel is and the impulse to gentle them. So that even when they're certain he's the Dragon, part of them still wants to gentle him.
-Siuan says about the Hall "There may be more resistance than I would wish." Yeah... :\ You're more right than you know. She then says that it's nothing serious so long as they don't know how long she's been involved with Rand.
-Siuan tells Min to ask Moiraine if she wants to know why she didn't say more in her letter. but how's she supposed to do that if Siuan doesn't let her out of the Tower?
-I feel so bad for Sahra. :( All that just for happening to get assigned to escort Min to the Amyrlin. Before she dies she thinks "She had hurt her; it was not supposed to be that way." :( I can just feel her confusion. Aes Sedai aren't supposed to hurt people. What's going on? D:

Chapter 18:
-Faile is apparently "telling everyone she means to travel the Ways" :facepalm :facepalm
-Gaul says that perhaps the water oaths will hold Chiad back from acting on their blood feud if he tries to make Faile leave the Two Rivers. What's the water oath?
-The Aiel don't like riding horses.
-Gahh, Faile. :facepalm She keeps making jabs at Perrin and doesn't seem to care how uncomfortable it makes Loial. He even asks her if she's taking it too far. :( I hate how she's manipulating him.
-I like Gaul getting into the verbal sparring with Bain and Chiad to defend Perrin.

Chapter 19:
-Elayne isn't familiar with bananas.
-Nynaeve is really rude to the poor carriage driver. I'm quite happy with Elayne here.
-Elayne feels like the windfinder reminds her of Aviendha since she can channel.
-The Sea Folk use male pronouns for ships, while the people in the westlands use female pronouns.
-I like that it's the windfinder's decision whether or not to carry Aes Sedai on the ship. She's risking the most.
-The Sea Folk have glasses, but Elay ne has never seen them before
-"Jorin made a strangled sound. 'My sister, has a Cargomaster ever mutinied against his Sailmistress?'" :rofl The Sea Folk annoy me later, but I like Jorin and Coine at the moment. :)

Chapter 20:
-When the boat shakes, Nynaeve tells Elayne it was probably because her second letter touched a nerve. :arch Really? You knew he was summoning Tairen nobles to a big meeting and your first thought is "He's distraught over Elayne's letter"?
-For the Coramoor, Coine is willing to set sail without a Tairen pilot and forfeit her ability to return to Tear.
-I love Elayne just reaching up and tugging on Thom's mustache. :giggle It's adorable.
-I understand Nynaeve's reasoning of wanting to make sure Thom and Juilin don't accidentally jeopardize their sensitive mission, but it seems a bit rude to actually make him promise to do 'as he is told'. :arch That seems rather needlessly condescending. Again, I like that Elayne sees that and asks Nynaeve if she isn't being too hard on them. I do understand her reasoning of making sure they don't sabotage their plans since they're only Accepted... but it still bugs me.
-And Elayne is good and holds back on telling Nynaeve she sounds like Moiraine. :p I'm quite liking Elayne in these early books. :)
-references to our age being the age before the Age of Legends
-Elayne laughs at the idea of Thom protecting Rand.
-I'm glad it doesn't take too long for Elayne to realize why she felt the affinity for Jorin.
-I enjoy the conversation between Elayne and Jorin. They're friendly and willing to teach each other. It's nice to see willing collaboration between different types of channelers, since the White Tower is usually so closed about that kind of stuff. And I liked Jorin saying a prayer for the damane they killed.

Chapter 21:
-I really like Moiraine, but she is annoyingly adamant that Rand shouldn't listen to anyone's counsel but hers, even Thom's. :arch
-Egwne like Faile and thinks she's good for Perrin. :brown-blink:
-Egwene asks Moiraine if she can even recognize a human emotion when she sees one. :rolleyes
-It's nice to see that Rand is at least willing to trust Egwene and Moiraine enough to tell them his plans, blatantly telling them that his plans are at least not a secret for the two of them.

Wait, Moraine is Taringail's half sister, Taringail was Married to Tigraine, and had Galad through her before she went to the waste and had Rand.

Doesn't that mean Moraine is Rand's Cousin or second cousin?

I think this is relevant

  1. [*=left]Tigraine Mantear was married once to Taringail Damodred and then conceived Rand with Janduin, though they were never married.
[*=left]Taringail Damodred was married twice. First to Tigraine Mantear and then to Morgase Trakand.
While Moiraine Damodred is the half-sister of Taringail, she and Rand share no blood relationship. Likewise, he and Elayne Trakand share no close blood relationship, despite having a half-brother in common (each shares a different parent) and being distant descendants of Andor's first queen, Ishara Casalain. Due to the fusing of Luc Mantear and Isam Mandragoran, he and Lan Mandragoran have a common relative. Slayer is Rand's uncle and also Lan's cousin.

When Egwene came to Rhuidan, they said they can't dreamwalk some places, among them Rhuidan. So that's why they can check underground if it's water there.

I think the water oath is to keep the peace in the search of Rand?

Yeah, a water oath is one of the most sacred oaths that an Aiel can speak. The Wise Ones made every Aiel that went over the Dragonwall (aka The spine of the world) swear that they would not fight other clans while they were there :look:

Re: 2015 Re-Readalong: The Shadow Rising Chapters 15-21

Chapter 14:
-Berelain's desire to 'have' Perrin seems very sudden. Seriously, where does it come from?

Beralain wanted Rand because she wanted to be close to power. When she realized how dangerous he truly was, she decided to go for someone else. She considered Mat for half a second but decided against him because he was too much like her with his flirtatious and headstrong ways. That left Perrin. I don't think she intended to go after him when she first entered his room but once she was there she got the idea into her head. And of course when Faile got jealous Berelain decided to dig her heels in and really go for Perrin, just to prove that she's better than Faile.

Just so, Mai.

I really enjoy the moment when she considers Mat, that makes me chuckle every time.

Re: 2015 Re-Readalong: The Shadow Rising Chapters 22-28

Notes first, then I'll comment on others' comments. :D

Chapter 9

  • This is the first time we see Lews Therin come through.

Chapter 10

  • Rand knows instinctively what cry to use to rally the Defenders: "Rally to the Stone! The Stone stands!" Had he used another rally cry, it may not have worked out so well.
  • Rand has his first chance to kill Lanfear.
  • How does Lanfear sever the flows? Do we see this later?
  • The dead girl Rand wants to bring back to life is one more big step toward his loss of innocence.

Chapter 11

  • Funny: Egwene's scared of what Rand did, but also pissed because she couldn't learn what he did.
  • Egwene wishes it was possible to visit others' dreams.
  • I think I've always pictured the skeleton in the Panarch's Palace as, like, a brontosaurus or something. But it's just an elephant. (S'redit. Whatever.)
  • We also see a saber toothed bear (?), a giraffe, and the Mercedes symbol.
  • Aviendha is hesitant to talk about the Wise Ones, probably because she doesn't want to be one, not because the Aiel aren't supposed to talk about them.

Chapter 13

  • The Myrdraal called Mat the Hornsounder, so the Dark One knows that Mat sounded the Horn.
  • Trollocs rescued Mat and Rand. Why?
  • Mat is so tightly woven in the Pattern at this point that he can't even say he's going to the Two Rivers.
  • I love the way Mat dresses down Berelain. And her reaction: "Too much like me." :giggle

Chapter 14

  • Perrin just thinks Mat doesn't want to go home.
