Here's the thing. There is a lot to like about Berelain to be sure. But the fact that she deliberately tries to interfere with Perrin and Faile's marriage repeatedly and over both of their objections really REALLY rubs me the wrong way. She's doing it for her own entertainment, and it drives me crazy.

Oh I don't like her very much most of the time, but I respect her eye for politics.

Ok, well then THAT is completely different. :P I agree with you there. In fact, I think she could have been a fan-favorite if the Perrin plotline had been dropped early on. It is such a contrast to her persona as a brilliant minded, tactful leader of a small nation. The fact that she earned the respect of the Aiel, and her relationship with Rhuarc, made her such an interesting character ... until she went and spoiled it all. :facepalm

Re: 2015 Re-Readalong: Lord of Chaos, Chapters 42-48

Note catch up time. :look:

Chapter 22
The army covered 45 miles in one day? Holy. Crap. Mat's really pushing. In Little House on the Prairie, Pa took 2 days to go 45 miles, and he was just a single covered wagon. Crossing the prairies, 20 miles a day was considered a really really good day. So 45 miles in one day? I don't want to say I'm doubtful, but...
Mat doesn't lose his habit of picking up neat things.
Mat's way of getting scouts was brilliant. Each tier down the line are better and better horsethieves and poachers.
The Tinkers were killed. :(
Mat's luck saves him from the Aiel.
Mat: "Every scar marked a small victory, another time he had avoided Aes Sedai."
Olver is like Mat and likes to collect things.
Aaaaand without even thinking about it, Mat is taking care of Olver.

Chapter 23
jumara = Worms
Also: 2nd month of the year. Yikes. (No idea what this refers to. :look: )
Graendal had a run in with a gholam.
How did Rand get around Sammael's weavings for the messenger? Why does Sam think that Rand agreed to a treaty? Was he lying to Graendal?
Graendal does know that Compulsion is not the answer to everything.
Sam is manipulating Graendal into finding the other Forsaken.

Chapter 24
Egwene is already starting to think about making the Tower whole again without war.
Egwene lectures the men for not following ji'e'toh.
The cloaks the Aes Sedai are wearing have a pure white disc on the back. Stitching shows the flame, and the ajahs have specific borders to distinguish from one another.
Amys and Rhuarc see Berelain as a daughter, and she sees them as parents. Why?
Sorilea invites Egwene to become a Wise One.

Chapter 25
The Tower sent 6 Aes Sedai, 2 Reds, 0 Yellow.
Egwene complains that Rand trusts no one lately, but she's done nothing to earn that trust.
The Tower Sedai are: Nesune (Brown), Sarene (White), Coiren (Gray), Erian (Green), Galina (Red/Black), and Katerine (Red/Black?).
Niande was Galldrian's Aes Sedai adviser.
Egwene finds the place where the Tower embassy is staying. There's a lot of saidar being used inside.
Egwene notices that the solders who came with the embassy are all young.,
"Sometimes Sarene thought that beautiful women [had no head for logic], though there was no logic in the connection that she could see." -- Egwene says Sarene is beautiful, but apparently Sarene doesn't know that.
What is the embassy preparing for? Why are they doing Novice exercises filled to the brim with the Power?

Katerine (Red/Black?).

Yes, Katerine Alruddin is Black Ajah.

The embassy is keeping up a steady stream of the Power in high amounts so that if/when they kidnap and shield Rand (this was the backup plan if he didn't come willingly) the fact that they are using so much Power (to shield him) won't be noticed by anyone. They plan to hold Rand at their house for a short time, shielded, before leaving the city, and they don't want anyone suspicious of the high level of the Power being used there at that time.

Re: 2015 Re-Readalong: Lord of Chaos, Chapters 42-48

Why does Sam think that Rand agreed to a treaty? Was he lying to Graendal?

Yes, really I think the answer to "Is a forsaken lying to another forsaken" will almost always be yes.

Egwene complains that Rand trusts no one lately, but she's done nothing to earn that trust.

This is something that really grates as the series goes on "Rand isn't trusting anyone, he is terrible for not trusting people" As of now it is not that bad but after the events of this book can anyone blame him for having trust issues?

until she went and spoiled it all

Eh, nobody really came out of the ghealdan plot better than they went in so I just try to weight the feelings I have for the characters involved in it with a little more leeway than I give other characters since it was probably the worst plot in the books.

LoC 33 : Egwene proves she has the heart of an Aiel by admitting her Toh to the Wise ones and asking them to help her meet it, Rand sends Mat to Salidar as well, to escort Elayne to Camelyn.

LoC 34: Super Speed Bella, and Ewgene is going to be Amyrlin.

LoC 35: I wonder if this loophole gets closed later, or if eventually someone decides to make someone who can't even channel into the Amyrlin.

LoC 36: Egwene lays out her plans for Romanda, Lelaine and Sheriam and 100% starts in on Des' Demar and begins playing people against each other.

LoC 37: Nynaeve's pov here is some very not subtle bit of foreshadowing isn't it, also Egwene forcing Siuan into obedience which is a great accomplishment itself.

LoC 38: Is it really such a crime that Mat does not think Egwene is Amyrlin? Egwene herself up until partway through the ritual to raise her up.

LoC 39: Am I the only one who thinks that Mat should have kicked Nyneave back?

Yeah, he really does have good reasons for distrusting most people. I can understand the frustration on the part of Egwene/Nynaeve/Mat/Perrin, though. They've known Rand since he was a kid and so, while Rand's reasons for distrusting Egwene do make sense, I can definitely see why she's frustrated.

No. I was thinking about this this morning, and I hate that Nynaeve thinks she's justified to kick Mat hard enough to make him limp. Really? And the other girls just stand there and let her get away with it. Ugh.

Re: 2015 Re-Readalong: Lord of Chaos, Chapters 42-48

Exactly.

One thing I'm doing more and more is switching the genders in my head. If a man had kicked a woman so hard she'd started limping, would that be ok? Then why is it ok for a woman to kick a man? The same thing goes for the Tylin/Mat situation later, which is coming soon and which I am so not looking forward to reading.

Re: 2015 Re-Readalong: Lord of Chaos, Chapters 42-48

Chapter 26
where did Sulin go after Shadar Logoth? (Answered later: To find work as a servant.)
One of Rand's Aelfinn answers: If you would live, you must die.
The Sea Folk arrived on horses, which helps demonstrate their desperation/eagerness to get to Rand.
Rand was afraid he and Elayne were more closely related.
Elania has a problem imagining the Houses as farmers--she can't connect with common folk at all.

Chapter 27
Gawyn thinks Egwene should return to the Tower -- but then, he's sided with Elaida.
Egwene's picking up of Aiel contempt for servants can only hurt her.
Does Elaida think Rand will be won over with gold? in Chapter 45, he thinks about the Tower embassy thinking he's won over with curtsies.
Rand: "When I reach the Tower. Yes, I look forward to the day I stand in the Tower." Heh. And also terrifying.
Galina is trying to hide that she knows Alviarin more than in passing.
The Tower embassy think the hidden sister was Moiraine.

Chapter 28
Knowing that Lews Therin is in his head sets Rand off and makes him irritable and afraid. Irritable because he's afraid, likely.
Rand introduces himself to Lews Therin.
Chapter is from Rand's POV, but Nandera's handtalk is translated and we're told why Jalani closed her eyes. Weird.
Rand: "Maidens were touchier than anyone, except maybe Stone Dogs and Black eyes."
Alliandre is the first ruler to approach Rand willingly.
The Gray Man smells of filth.
Fain felt the shift when Alanna bonded Rand. He feels like he possesses part of Rand, and when Alanna bonded him, it pushed Fain out a bit. How are they connected? (Through the dagger, right? Rand was cut with the dagger?)
Fain worked on Niall and Elaida so neither will ever trust Rand. Maybe he pushed Elaida harder and that's why she gets a little nuts later?
Fain can tell a Darkfriend by looking at one. D
Does Fain ever meet Verin? If he did, would he be able to tell she'd reneged on her oaths to the Dark One?

Chapter 29
Suian had chosen Brendas as trusted
Nynaeve feels good about admitting she's wrong.
Nynaeve is distracted and not concentrating wholly on Logain, and that's how she manages to Heal him.

Chapter 30
Logain saw a glow around Rand -- that's why he'd stared and laughed in Caemlyn.
Nynaeve uses all the elements while Yellows use only Water, Air, and Spirit.
And then the Yellows go into talk about theory of Healing and when to use Fire and Earth.
Carlinya speaks against gentling any more men -- to set themselves apart from Elaida and the Red Ajah.
Suian's Warder Alric's death hits her, and she admits she's falling in love with Bryne.
Suian is Aes Sedai again now that she's Healed -- and possibly also the Amyrlin. At least, she's going to try for it.
The Hall goes on the assumption that what Elaid did to Suian and Leane was legal, so both have lost all ties, associations, and titles.
What strikes me as funny is that the Aes Sedai don't even think to question if Suian and Leane's oaths still hold. No one ever tested a stilled/burnt out Aes Sedai to find out, so that's new knowledge -- the oaths no longer hold.
Delana is Black Ajah.

No Mother, I think the connection is the remnants of the bond Fain had to the three boys when he was hunting them in the first book. He hasn't been cut with the dagger yet, has he?

I think Adui is correct that the bond between them is the connection instilled into him when he became the Dark One's Hound.

He was for a while but I always thought that the connection was so strong to Rand because he is the one who turned out to be the Dragon Reborn. It seems to me that once he declared himself, Fain was more intent on following only him.

Already in Great Hunt it seems that Fain only felt Rand. I don't know if that was ever explained :shifty

Re: 2015 Re-Readalong: Lord of Chaos, Chapters 42-48

I'd always thought that Fain could still sense Mat and Perrin but a lot less strongly... so much so that the feeling of Rand overwhelmed the other two?

I'm glad to be getting into the Egwene plot line, I remember it being one of my favourites
I love the way she plays the hall off of each other - it's some of my favourite stuff to read.

Yes, I'm loving Egwene's machinations with the Hall. :pleased-1:
