Re: 2015 Re-Readalong: EoTW, Prologue - Chapter 6

Chapter 4 notes:
Even Tinkers are exciting!
Master Luhhan can't stand the sight of blood -- anyone know off the top of their head what he does during the battles later?
There was nothing the black-cloaked horseman could do that the people of Emond's Field could not handle together.
This made me laugh because it's so true.

*thinks real hard*

I don't recall Master Luhhan showing up in any actual battles, we should keep have a list of things to watch for like that.

Good idea Ryu.

Hmm. In the battle with white cloaks? I really can't remember either. Guess we'll find that out later.

I just finished chapter 5, and I'm amazed that even after countless rereads, the whole sequence with the Trollocs still manages to keep me on the edge of my seat. Also, RIP Narg, smartest of the Trollocs.

Finished Chapter 4 today. I noticed that Rand is really perceptive, especially for someone so young. He realizes Fain might not like having a gleeman in town (because it would take the attention away from him). There's one more example that I can't remember now. But him being able to think from other peoples' points of view will be a great asset when he becomes a leader.

Yes! But he's really perceptive except when it comes to Egwene. There's the part where people are calling out for stories, and Rand is sure Egwene is asking for stories of adventure just to bother him, and I think that misunderstanding pretty much typifies their interactions throughout the rest of the series. As much as the two might care about each other, they don't really understand one another at all.

One of the most amusing things, through all the series is the whole "One of the boys always thinks the other two knows more about women than he does" thoughts that go on.

Rand and Perrin do it all the time. Last read,, I tried to find Mat doing it, but couldn't, so I am going to look for it this time.
Though that might be because Mat's love interest comes in later than theirs

Ashlyn, me too!

When Rand and Tam get back to the farm, Tam walks around each of the buildings and tastes the well water. What was he checking for? The only thing I could think of was Darkhound footprints/slobber dents in the stone, but there was no indication of Darkhounds, so that didn't really make sense to me. What Lurk-lore have I forgotten?

I am not sure he himself knew what he was looking for Mother, theoretically he was checking the perimeter for any tracks, as well as the buildings as for them well, I guess he might have thought it was poisoned? I guess Tear had a thing about poisoning water supplies when they warred with Illian.

I'm not sure he suspected Trollocs and such. All he knew was the boys saw a stranger with odd abilities. He was just being especially cautious and preparing for anything with the skills he learned during the Aiel War.

Haha, yes I was going to mention that as well.

I wonder how much Tam really knows about Darkfriends/creatures. He's the only one in the town who has really traveled outside of the area, but he keeps quiet about what he's seen. I'm just wondering if he knew what to look for, or had an idea of what the black rider could be, or if he was just being safe.

Tam mentions that this is the first time he's seen Trollocs, but he's heard of them before from men who had seen them. My thinking is that he didn't realize the dark rider could be Myrddraal until after he saw the Trollocs, but I also wonder if he would have realized if Rand had mentioned the wind not affecting the rider's cloak, since if he's heard about Trollocs, he's probably heard about Myrddraal, as well

But as Lan mentioned, it wasn't normal to see trollocs so far south, so Tear is way out of the way, I doubt many knew about myrddraals.

Re: 2015 Re-Readalong: EoTW, Prologue - Chapter 6

Reading this is making me realize just how little I remember from the rest of the series. I've read this book a few times, but otherwise I've only read the others once, and it's been about 5 years. Can you guys remind me, do we find out where Tam got the heron mark sword?

Also, that Trolloc part always really hooks me. I read way ahead now. :p

One more thing, how did the Myrdraal not see/hear Rand when it passed near him on the road? Did Rand just perceive it to be closer than it was? Rand had begun moving already and it seemed as though it looked right at him. I would think it'd be able to see or hear him.

I don't think so. We do find a little about how he became a bladesmaster, but very little of what happened to him out of the Two Rivers

I really wish we could know how Moiraine knew to be in the Two Rivers at that time. :tug

Myralin, I think he got lucky. :cheeseeni: I assume he was well hidden even though he felt exposed -- you know how you can think someone is looking right at you but actually they're looking at a person behind you, or right next to you? Especially if it's someone you've been noticing for whatever reason. Rand was totally focused on the Myrdraal, so it may have felt like it was looking directly at him but it wasn't.

I guess that she found out that one of the boys had to be the boy she have been looking for a long time. Her hunt starts in the book New Springs.

I believe that she partially explains about this in The Great Hunt, when Rand talks to her, Verin and the Amyrlin in Fal Dara :look:
