Re: 2015 Re-Readalong: Dragon Reborn 30-36

I like imagining that there are literally Black Ajah members hiding under Egwene's bed. :p
Now I'm picturing several of them under there, all lined up ready to strike.

I haven't read 29 yet, and don't remember all the context, but maybe Sheriam killed the GM? Or the body was a message to her?

Re: 2015 Re-Readalong: Dragon Reborn 30-36

It didn't say anything more than what Kassina wrote. So I think it's a message for Sheriam...?

Chapter 31: Poor Thom. Good that Mat came along and swooped him up...

Chapter 32: who is High Lord Samon? He's for sure brainwashing people of Tear!

Did Huan Mallia ever go to sea?

About the girls and Tear-trap. I think it's Lanfear that want to stop Black Ajah from taking Rand?

Edit: just adding more here than making a new post.

I've missed a few weeks here! :tug I lost track of how far I should read so now I'm a bit ahead of you all. I'll have to get all of my notes posted and catch up on this thread.

The only thing I can remember off the top of my head is that good grief a lot of people have true dreams and dismiss them as nothing. And the Aes Sedai think Dreaming is a rare talent. Hah!

Re: 2015 Re-Readalong: Dragon Reborn 30-36

I've not been taking many notes on these chapters. I think I'm getting too caught up in Mat's story.

Chapter 30
  • I wonder if Anaiya actually fell for Mat's "going along to get along" act.
  • Mat reacted really strongly to 'the Dark One's own luck' being used about him. Was it just the connection he had to the dagger for so long?
  • Was it the dagger and/or the healing that gave Mat his luck? Or is it just his ta'veren-ness coming full bloom?
  • The footpads following Mat mentioned "strange things" in the night. What strange things? The Gray Man? It's Tar Valon, for Light's sake, so it can't be Myrdraal or Trollocs. What did the footpads see?
Chapter 31
  • Thom killed the guy in Carihien and set off a civil war. Go Thom!
Chapter 32
  • Mat has the air and confidence of a lord. :giggle
  • The ship captain makes up a whole story about Mat and Thom, which just goes to show that if you don't say anything, and let people come to their own conclusions, you don't even have to lie straight-out, just let them believe what they wish to believe. Aes Sedai do this very, very well.
  • Does Mallia turn up again? Jordan likes to bring people back (Domon).
  • Is High Lord Samon (forget which Forsaken he is) using something with the Power to make Tairens follow him and believe him and regurgitate everything he says as truth, as Mallia does? Of course, it's possible that he doesn't need to, given that Tairens are predisposed to hate the Power and Aes Sedai and Tar Valon anyway.
  • Who are those men who were chasing Mat?
  • I feel sorry for Rand, all the people he loves and will love showing up in his dreams to kill him. Knowing they could kill him there, and then having to face them in life, would make it really hard to trust anyone.

Chapter 33.

Why didn't Perrin tell about the paw print at the stone to Lan? Was it hellhound he smelled in Remmen too?

And yay, we gotta meet Aiel again. And Faile! :D

Re: 2015 Re-Readalong: Dragon Reborn 30-36

I'm not doubleposting!

Chapter 34

Moiraine says: "(Rand) ... He has the blood of long walkers and strong runners in him" she's talking about the aiel side of him!

Perrin saves Gaul, that explain why he helps Perrin later in the series.

Chapter 35

Faile is crazy. But that's how Hunters are. And shes now a part of the group.

Chapter 36.

Was the woman a Darkfriend? And somehow Rand killed a Gray man without noticing it.

Re: 2015 Re-Readalong: Dragon Reborn 30-36

Who are those men who were chasing Mat?

Pretty much random Dark Friends, one of them uses "The Great Lord of the Dark" and only Dark Friends use that phrasing.

The Black Ajah women who left had no pattern. Elayne: "I think it means there is a pattern of some kind." What pattern?

In terms of randomness, a "Lack" of pattern is in itself a pattern. In terms of Dice, if you Roll six dice, it is equivalently un-likely that you will have Six ones, as it is you will have one of each side, for the 13 Sisters that left the tower to have nothing in common is incredibly unlikely at best, and just shy of impossible at worst.

Especially considering that Most non Wilder Aes Sedai likely come from large cities, of which I think there are only really a Dozen or so of. This speaks very much of a plan by a White Sister who is "trying to avoid" a pattern, and missing out on real world details.

Chapter 20:
[/U]-Mat thinks Selene reminds him of someone: "a woman dressed as one nobly born, a Darkfriend with a deadly dagger in her slender hand."
Who is it he's remembering? Is it Selene?

He's remembering Mili Skane, a Darkfriend from Book 1 who later turns up in Elayne's plotline in Caemlyn.

She also turns up in Ebou Dar, which is why Mat knows Carridin must be a Darkfriend...

Re: 2015 Re-Readalong: Dragon Reborn 30-36

Chapter 33:
Perrin sees evidence of darkhounds, but doesn't recognized it as such. To us, on the reread, it's super obvious, though! Makes me wish he would've just mentioned it to Moiraine or Lan instead of just assuming he was imagining it looking like footprints on stone.

Chapter 35:
I liked Faile's reaction on hearing that Mandarb is also the name of Lan's horse.

Chapter 36:
-We see the darkfriend in Tar Valon who was responsible for sending those men after Mat.
-Was the merchant Rand killed a darkfriend? Did he just assume she was? :brown-blink: I realize there was a gray man in her company, but that wasn't necessarily her doing. He then makes the corpses kneel to him... creepy, Rand.

Re: 2015 Re-Readalong: Dragon Reborn 30-36

Whew, I'm all caught up now. It took me forever to type up these notes.

Prologue:
-My notes simply say "Whitecloaks are dumb". I think I meant how they ignored so many of the rumors that were actually true.
- What Kassina said about the Dragon becoming associated with Darkfriends, I always wondered that too. If he's supposed to FIGHT the Dark One, why would people assume he's associated WITH the Dark One?

Chapter 1:
Why is Perrin resisting his wolf-ness so hard? He's seen how some people go crazy, but he's also seen Elyas who didn't. And last book he was okay with using wolves to track Fain, so what changed now?

Chapter 2:
I feel like Rand has changed so much since last book. He's taking everything super seriously and does sound like his paranoia is starting to drive him mad. Knowing how many more books there are, it seems a bit rushed now. He's got plenty of time to go mad later on.

Chapter 3:
There were so many ideas thrown around in this chapter that the final impression I got is that everyone is confused about what's going on in the world outside of their little camp.

Chapter 4:
Why does Perrin dream about Callandor? Just because of his connection to Rand? (I guess later on it seems like Perrin's wolf dreams are the equivalent of an Aes Sedai Dreamer's dreams, so they might be about anything important or coming soon in the future)

Chapter 5:
I felt so embarrassed for Perrin when he howled. Up until that point, I think anyone wouldn't have noticed his crazy fighting, because people do crazy things in battles, but after that...poor Perrin.

Chapter 6:
Oh, it's not just Perrin dreaming about Callandor...it's everyone. Also, the scene with Min and Lan made me giggle. Poor Lan. :giggle

Chapter 7:
Moiraine playing mind games with Perin and Loial felt kinda mean to me. Perrin's always seemed like the best behaved of the boys when it comes to respecting Aes Sedai and Loial certainly respects her. She could have just asked or told them to do things and they probably would have. Sure, Perrin argued with her when they were all just sitting around back at their secret camp, but the situation is different now that they're traveling. The games seem like a silly, unnecessary power play.

Chapter 8:
I agree with Ryu, I sure wish Elyas had been more forthcoming about how to not go wolf-crazy. Then again, it's probably one of those things that's different enough for each person that it wouldn't have totally helped. Still, I wish Perrin would put more faith in Elyas not being crazy instead of worrying so much about how he's going to lose himself.

Chapter 9:
Was Lanfear just flirting with Perrin? I thought she was pretty fixated on Rand.

Chapter 10:
I'm pretty sure I didn't feel this way the first time I read the book, but boy the girls act silly here! There's so much they don't know but they think because they can channel a bit and escaped the Seanchan, they know better than Verin how to handle the Whitecloaks. :tug

Chapter 11:
The guardhouse is described as having a six pointed star on it's side. The amount of time I spent trying to picture a sideways six pointed star is hilarious. Obviously a building wouldn't be an upright star, but boy did that confuse me at the time.

Chapter 12:
On the first read through, I was confused why Siuan was so worried about people finding out what she was doing. I thought either the other Aes Sedai would follow their leader, for the most part, or the Amyrlin was so powerful that it wouldn't matter if others disagreed with her actions. It's not until much later that we really see how tenuous the Amyrlin's position can be.

Chapter 13:
- This time around, the number of women who left being 13 is a lot more ominous than it was before, knowing what 13 channelers and 13 Myrdraal could do. It makes me wonder why they gave the girls to the Seanchan instead of turning them?
- I agree with the others who wondered how Elayne had grown strong enough to take the Accepted test. I assumed the Amyrlin just raised her with Egwene so Egwene wouldn't be totally singled out or possibly to bind her more tightly to the Tower now that Morgase is mad at them, but those seem poor reasons to except her to be able to pass the test.

Chapter 14:
I wonder what Verin kept back from that list that she gave Egwene. I'm sure she knew MUCH more about the Black Sisters than she shared.

Chapter 15:
I wonder if Sheriam was involved with the Gray Man being there, or just coincidence that she happened to be the one to come upon him?

Chapter 16:
Elayne's story about Queen Modrellein riding into battle, alone and unarmed, in order to rally the army, sure comes into play later.

Chapter 17:
Elaida says she's not surprised that they're all together, but why not? Because they all disappeared together? I didn't think they'd really had that many interactions, especially not that Elaida would be aware of.

Chapter 18:
Seeing how hard the Aes Sedai worked to save Mat, I wondered why they didn't link with the girls. Even though their untrained, they're so much stronger than everyone else that it would have been a huge help just to have that extra strength.

Chapter 19:
I don't think I'll ever stop being disappointed that we didn't get a pre-dagger Mat chapter. There's no way to tell how much of Mat is the original Mat versus the memory-enhanced Mat. Was he always such a good analyst, or did that come later?

Chapter 20:
I had forgotten that Tam and Abell came to Tar Valon. I wish there could have been a chapter or side story about what they're doing while their children are running around learning to be heroes, especially since they do come back as characters later in the series.

Chapter 21:
Verin says at one point that what they're talking about has nothing to do with being a Dreamer, but then a few paragraphs later says of course it has something to do with being a Dreamer. :eek Well that seems like a giveaway that someone should have caught. They can't both be true!

Chapter 22:
Beldeine is Egwene's Keeper in her test, a real Aes Sedai who Egwene doesn't even know of at this point. Those ter'angreal are just freaky, man. I guess they could draw the info from the Aes Sedai who are channeling into them?

Chapter 23:
I can't believe no Brown sister has ever tried to record and study the things that people see during testings. I'm sure a lot of people would never talk about it, but would that stop a Brown sister from trying?

Chapter 24:
I loved Mat's battle against Galad and Gawyn and how it becomes a teaching lesson for all the Gaidin-trainees at the end! Also, glad Mat explains that his da was good with a staff because otherwise it would have been one more thing we're never sure if Mat was good at before or after the dagger.

Chapter 25:
- Oh Egwene, dismissing the important dreams. Re-reading now, it seems pretty obvious that a lot of those unknown ter'angreal were used to aid Dreaming.
- I agree with some of the other comments, WHY did Lanfear want them to go to Tear?

Chapter 26:
The number of times they channel without knowing what they're doing... *shudder*

Chapter 27:
Who the heck is Sylvie? It seems an odd play for Lanfear, but maybe Moghedien like Mother suggested? I don't think Lanfear would expect Egwene to know her way around.

Chapter 28:
The different methods the girls try while bribing Mat crack me up.

Chapter 29:
- I liked seeing Nynaeve yield to Laras, because it shows that Nynaeve is actually learning what she's supposed to in the Tower...to leash her temper and obey when necessary.
- Was the Gray Man in Sheriam's bed a real thing (like maybe Darkfriend-Sheriam was in trouble for some reason) or something Sheriam planted there herself? Or was it the same Gray Man and Sheriam had hidden it there rather than explain how it became dead in the hallway, and this is just people finding it and assuming it was after Sheriam instead of the girls?

Chapter 30:
I had forgotten how crazy Mat's luck went. It's like it had all been bottled up inside of him and this is its first chance to come out and wow does it explode.

Chapter 31:
I like Mat teaming up with Thom. I had forgotten how depressed Thom was.

Chapter 32:
We've seen so litle of Rand this book, really. Now he gets a couple of paragarphs at the end of this chapter just to kinda update us that he's still traveling about, being paranoid. It made me laugh.

Chapter 33:
Oh Perrin, you see a giant footprint in the stone and don't tell anyone? I guess like Kassina said, he didn't know anything about darkhounds at the time so it was easy for him to think he imagined it or it meant nothing.

Chapter 34:
How was the Aiel in the cage a turning point for Perrin?

Chapter 35:
I liked Faile at first. It was nice to have someone who knew less about the situation than Perrin.

Chapter 36:
SO annoying how Moiraine reacts to Perrin's dreams. He's doing exactly what she said and she comes off as such jerk about it!

Re: 2015 Re-Readalong: Dragon Reborn 30-36

Chapter 34:
How was the Aiel in the cage a turning point for Perrin?

I think it was the first time in the series he has actually done something without being told.

TDR 30: Mat leaves the Tower, on his way out he runs into Anayia, I would love to see this scene on TV, just the sheepish Guilty grin mat gives her, if I were directing on that, I would actually have Mat give the guilty grin and a wink, and have Anayia give a flirty wink back, start the “Girls that chase after Mat fluster him” gag sooner in the plot.

Then the Luck begins in earnest now we learn that the “good” things that a Ta'veren cause are directly opposing the bad things the Dark One does, does this extend to Mat and Perin or is that just a Rand only effect? Because the amount and way Mat's luck flows would have to offset a good many bad things the dark one is doing, as far as the Assassins that went after Mat, I am not so sure landing on his foe was luck, even at this point Mat has the shadows of memories of the past, and several lifetimes of fighting would probably give you good instincts as to fighting.

TDR 31: So, you know I had a thought, quite very suddenly while looking at the Library summery for this chapter. “Mara and the Three Foolish Kings” is it possible, that Mara is AMARAka, which would be a linguistic Mutation of America..and the Three foolish kings were the Kings of England, France and Spain? Probably not..but I think at least two of the other “Gleeman's tales” are allusions to things that happened during our age.

Anyways, I got distracted...WHOOOOO! Short Attention Span for the win!

Thom comes back, and Mat convinces him to go to Camelyn, which unfortunately doesn't really go anywhere, I am sad we never saw a meeting between Thom and Morgaise. I have the strange mental image of Thom walking in a room, seeing Morgaise then turning around and Morgaise grabbing one of the Chodan Kal access keys and using it to get enough of the power to wrap him in air.

TDR 32: Gray Gull! ~/ 'v'\~ (its a seagull!)

I outta stop writing these when I am on the way home from work, I get goofy when I am tired.

Moving on. Malllia outright advocates..Genocide of people who can channel here, well I hope his ship sinks. I find it odd that they think that the “White tower means to Crush every nation” especially since you know, they restrict the use of the power to non-violent uses, you know what I would do if I wanted to crush the nations under my Iron Fist? Use magic against my foes, as someone who plays Several RPGs, with mages and the like. One of the best ways to crush my foes under my heel, hear their lamentations, and generally cause Havok...is MAGIC, it is quite useful for that.

TDR 33:

Back to Perrin's POV, and we meet Gaul, YAY Gaul, I love Gaul, he is just behind Verin in my list of “Characters who are awesome even if they aren't really a main character” I love how he follows Perrin around, and no matter what happens he just takes it all in stride. The ways? Fine, Talking to Wolves? Okay sure. Go into the world of dreams, even though the wise ones say that is an evil act? Lets go, I can pay my Toh later.

TDR 34:

I love how Aiel are supposed to be supreme masters of stealth..and Gaul does not at all mention to Perrin “hey these white cloaks are coming you should probably hide” until it is way too late.

Of course Gaul here...is awesome, this the first we see of the Aiel ability to do battle, we see that the Aiel are outright the baddest Mofo's in Randland, it amazes me that we see later that the Seanchan can manage to push them back, especially with the fact that t he Aiel know that the Seanchan use channelers in combat, that should have pushed them into having the Wise Ones do the same, and then pay the Toh for breaking the old ways later on, Of course Faile sees this going down. Someone has a Crush on Perrin!

TDR 35:

Perrin's group heads down River, I love that Lan basically tells Perin “You screwed all this up, you tell Moraine” they catch a ship and Faile follows, the best part of this chapter is Loial admitting that he likes all the Adventure.

Faile's logic is somewhat good here. An Aes Sedai and a Warder? That is not entirely odd even in the country, she has seen that before, especially being in line for a Throne. The Ogier is stranger sure, but Tar Valon was built by the Ogier so it is understandable, Perrin would stand out in this group as a random Farm Kid, Him being someone who wants to become a Warder, however I imagine by this point the Axe looks too comfortable on his belt for him to be someone without combat experience, and well Lan is not exactly hiding who he really is, sure he does not have his cloak but Lan really can not hide how awesome he is.

TDR 36:

Perrin heads to the world of dreams, and is guided by hopper to a meeting between Lanfear and Ba'alZamon, which for Perrin I bet was one of the most confusing things ever for him. He had been told that Ba'alZamon is one and the same with The Dark One, and Lanfear totally tells Ba'alZamon to stuff it in his ear, after wards Perrin happens upon Rand who is having a bad dream about dark friends.

So, the general reaction here is that Rand is supposed to be going mad however, there is a Gray Man there as well, so Rand was right to think that a servant of the dark is around, even if he did not realize that the danger was the Gray Man. However Rand does not know that Gray Men even exist, despite being with Moraine for months, one would think that she would have informed him of Assassins such as that.

TDR: 37

Back to Egwene's party, they are on the way south to Tear, and managed to get ahead of Mat. They apparently hauled rump out of the tower after their meetings with Mat and Siuan because they are ahead of Mat at this point, also the ship here is named Crane.

I will come back to that when we see the next ship, because I think Jordan's Random Name generator stalled out on ship names for this book.

Egwene has more dreams, most of it incomprehensible. She eventually decides that Mat is being pursed by a Grey Man, and Elyane instantly assumes it is because of her letter, Thinks she is the center of the world sometimes she does, it is not like Mat is a Ta'veren or like important to the pattern or anything.

Oh that makes something new occur to me, if Grey Men are after Mat, then on a random ship in the middle of Andor is probably better than the tower. Since TWO have been found in the Tower in the course of this book.

TDR: 38

It's Aviendha, hello Aviendha now your name is in my Libra Office Dictionary, forever! Or until I do a hard drive wipe and lose my dictionary modifications, which is always a pain in the rear end because I play enough video games that I want my Libra Dictionary to not cry at me when I use the phrase “Frostmourne” or “Multistrike” or Yoshi, and Xenochronicles, or Tauren. Tauren is not recognized by my base Libra Office.

Also Bain and Chiad, who proceed to be a thorn in Gaul's side for the rest of the series, including after they end up Gai'shan for him, is it just me or is it against the whole point of Gai'Shan thing for the men or women taken to do everything in their power to troll the person who has taken them, we have here our first Glimpse of Aiel culture, at least our first deep glimpse. Of course the biggest deal made of Aiel vs Wetlanders is the Jokes that neither understand, and I think..I can almost get Aiel humor sometimes, a lot of it seems to be verbal sparring between two people trying to get a good jab in.

Of course the best part of that comes later..when Rand tries to tell a Joke to the Maidens of the Spear, which I think is one of the most human moments in the entire series.

Of note, the fact that Nynaeve needs to be angry to heal is amusing, you can just imagine her as a wandering healer..yelling at people for being stupid as she heals.

Also, “A cross between Warders and the Red Ajah” makes me think of Eliada and Lan's secret love child every time and just the thought of that kid is enough to frighten me for weeks.

TDR: 39

The girls get caught by Brigands, and almost sold to a Myrddraal but are saved by Aiel, after sorta saving themselves. Apparently the Aiel have found some sort of counter for the Myrddraal's gaze of fear.

Also we meet Rhuarc, another character who is always in the back round but is just completely awesome, especially as the series goes on and Rand's relationship with the Aiel becomes more strained as he is under the pressure to not only lead them, but lead several other nations at once and balance everyone's loyalty.

And Nynaeve learns Balefire, I think this is the first real time she has been in a situation against real dark spawn in battle, I wonder if she did not pick up the weave when Moraine used it in the ways all the way back in book one, that or she just..came up with Balefire on her own, which is quite a thing to pull from your rump, considering how Balefire is dangerous to the pattern it is odd that the weave is simple enough for a wilder with every little real training in the power can just stitch together randomly.

TDR: 40

Not much to say here, Mat proves that he will in fact “be there when the fire is raging” much like Siuan said, this chapter is awesome simply for the lines at the end though “Thom, next time I look like I am about to act the hero you kick me”

There are few things that are quite as fun as a hero who does not wish to be a hero, grumbles every time he gets dragged into it, but does it anyways.

TDR: 41

Not much to say here, aside from Perrin's thoughts about Faile's nose makes me think that if they ever made a proper Wheel of Time TV series..they should go back in time and get Jamie Farr to play Faile.

TDR: 42

“Easing the Badger” sounds like a euphemism for something dirty, which makes sense considering the bawdy song that the Songstress is singing, Jordan pretty much hammers in that there is a Forsaken in charge of Illian, Really it fully makes sense that the Forsaken would start putting themselves into positions of power, sewing chaos in the world and weakening all the nations seems to be a great idea in the long term.

Especially if you are Ishamael and are using the other forsaken as a smokescreen for the real plans of the dark, also I love Perrin and Loial in this chapter just for his choice of weapons. The Wrestling Fan in me always appreciates when someone uses a chair as a weapon.

Re: 2015 Re-Readalong: Dragon Reborn 37-43

(No comments on 33 and 34.)

Chapter 35

  • Loial is coming to like adventures. :pleased-1:
  • Faile assumes Perrin is more than he appears.
  • Once Faile knows why Perrin laughed at her calling herself Mandarb, she accepted it & understood and moved on -- she didn't hold it against him.
Chapter 36
  • Does Elyas *want* to be a Wolfkin? How long did it take him to accept it? I want his backstory!
  • Does Lanfear know Ba'alzamon is not TDO?
  • It would be interesting to see Rand's journey to Tear from his POV. But it would probably mostly be killing anything that moved and mad ramblings and mutterings. So maybe not.
  • And the question that a lot of people have: Was the merchant really there to kill Rand?
Chapter 37
  • The bickering between Egwene and Nynaeve is [STRIKE]starting to get[/STRIKE] really annoying.
  • Elayne: "A few low bushes grew scattered between the thickets here close to the river, but they were too sparse to hide a child much less a brigand, and they were widely spread."
  • OH HELLO AVIENDHA.
Chapter 38
  • Egwene feels an affinity with Aviendha because of the Power -- have we heard about this yet?
  • Nynaeve's Healing -- it's super complex and we know (from later) that she uses all 5 elements to Heal.
Chapter 39
  • I love the way Bain & Chiad needle Aviendha about becoming a Wise One.
  • Why did the Aiel give Cairhien the Avendesora sapling to begin with?
  • Egwene got Healed in the backlash of the Healing Nynaeve gave Elayne. Is this normal? Did it take any more power/strength from Nynaeve because Egwene accidentally got caught up in the Healing? Do we ever see this happen again?
  • Nynaeve made balefire. But apparently not strong enough to bring back the dead Aiel.

The Aiel gave the Avendesora sapling because the forefathers of the Cairhienin was the only people to offer them water freely. That made the Aiel have toh towards them.
This is all better explained in the next book...

And I think Rand is extra crazy here because Jordan hadn't yet figured out that this was going to be a 10+ series... At this point I think it was supposed to be 6 books maybe...

Yeah, that would make a lot of sense, because he does seem to decrease in craziness.

And it could be the uncertainty from not knowing if he's the Dragon or not. That's why he's on his way to Tear, after all.

Thanks, Ida. Do we see the specific story of the water offering? :scratch

IIRC the story of the water offering is told in one of the flashback sequences that Rand experiences in Rhuidean.
