I'm in the discord and have discovered the Duolingo channel. Speaking of, that's a really cool idea and a great way of keeping people motivated. Japanese is such a beautiful and complex language.

I want to learn Russian, Dutch/Afrikaans, Romanian, and Greek. That said, I learned Norwegian and Swedish a couple years ago and need to brush up before I'm conversational again.

This is a great question. The differences between the books and the show are very much needed and I think were handled with care. If they made an extremely faithful adaptation, the first season would have been info dump after info dump which is a huge turn off for most people. As it stands now...
