So, I am a self-professed logophile - no, it's not catching and I'm not (super) scary, I just love words. I would really like to hear how you chose your name and if it has a meaning? I believe this is where this thread would go, but if not please advise.

Thanks in advance, I am so excited to learn about all the fascinating names I see around me.

I chose name Kira because it not like my own , and not like all the names that I already had.
"Embri" is the name of my character in a role-playing game. Maybe I 'm playing here some of his descendants, if he will have children. However, he probably would never have children. )

I also use such names as Дым (roughly translated as smoke), Лилмик (Lylmik, the oldest race in the Galaxy from The Galactic Milieu Series of science fiction novels by Julian May) and Aneska (For a long time it was the name of my main character in role-playing games, which were based on books by Andrzej Sapkowski. It is a bit like my real name Oksana, read in reverse order).

I chose mine by adding an A to my name.. And bearach is Gaelic for spear..

Jaim Gaidin,
That's a cool trick with the adding an "a" - and you can never really go wrong with Gaelic when you are a warrior. It just fits the "I'm a badass" nature, I think. Thank you for sharing.

Kira, you have a great many names it seems. Do they fit your various moods when you are in the RPGs or do you just like assuming the different roles? If you don't mind me asking of course... And by the way, Oksana is a lovely name, very mysterious.

I randomly opened the WoT book I was reading at the moment and picked first and last name. I misread Pedron as Padron and here I am.:p

Nymala Ingasy is a roleplaying character I made up for my D&D game, a gypsy rogue. :look: When Nyarin and Elandria sponsored me to the Tower, I just picked the name that they'd know me by. Five years later, here I am.

Name similar to the mirror or maybe mask.
We play different roles. They may be similar, but we behave differently for different groups of people and in different places. Name or username reflects the mask , what I want to look. And yes, sometimes it reflects the mood.

For example, the name "Дым" I associate with this picture

Imzadi I picked when I joined IRC, I needed a nick pretty fast, so I ran into the livingroom, looked at the books cover and found the book Imzadi (yes, from Star Trek) and since I've been using it... Actually it's soon 20 years ago...

Hopewind I picked when I joined here and needed a last name. I wanted something with Wind, so I talked with my mentor and we came up with Hopewind :D Why? Because my avatar is pirate (check the full version here) and I like the Sea Folk in WoT.

Everyone has such interesting reasons or circumstances for their names, even if by chance something occurred to shift a letter or two that brought you to where you are now.

And I notice many of you mention RPGs which I have heard of a lot, but have never played - any recommendations? Although that being said perhaps I should ask on the gaming board? Trying to get a hold of all of these options, lol!

Imzadi Sedai, First - I LOVE Star Trek! Secondly, the Sea Folk are probably my favorite culture in WOT. It probably helps that I am a Pisces and grew up wanting to be a pirate/explorer (first thing I can remember actually). When I picked my own name I chose Asherah from Near Eastern Mythology because it means "she who walks in the sea". Side note, I changed it to Ashara because every time I said Asherah I kept hearing "Shera - Princess of Power" from the 80's cartoon. I don't know if you are familiar with that in Norway, but it wasn't the image I was going for, lol.

Love your pirate avatar.

Saowynn Ardashir is one of my WoT role-playing characters. Her first name was, in part, because I wanted a shorter version I like, such as Wynn. Ardashir (still missing that r on the end of it!) is a Persian name, having been the name of a Shah during the Sasanian empire. I thought it made a great Aes Sedai name, particularly since I was making the character from Arad Doman. If I remember correctly, it means something like "divine right to rule".

The closest thing I could find for a definition was the Swedish and Medeival English name Elis, which is a variant of the name Elias. I thought of the name myself, after thinking of several.
Koh'inor is based on the Persian name Kohinoor. It means Mountain of Light.

Berior is from some WOT Name Generator, though I might have changed it a bit. I don't really remember, I just wanted it to start with a B, because my other nicknames up until then all started (randomly) with a B.
Alaeyn is a somewhat changed al'Aeyn which I thought to be slightly Ghealdan/Manetheren in sound... I thought it would be a plausible name for a Ghealdan noble house and that is exactly what my first RPG character bearing that name was ;)

When I joined this site for the first time I used it, since I was not allowed to use my other WoT-Name, as it was from the books (Barid)

I first used this name on Guild Wars 2, both the first and last name. Dnae just came to me, and then I knew I wanted a very short last name to go with it starting with an I, and Ila sounded the best. It was only a short time after that I joined the site, and I was still in love with the name, so I used it.
I've barely played Guild Wars 2 since, so for practical purposes, this is the only place I use the name.

I have since discovered that there is a character in Greek mythology named Danae, and that there is a WoT character named Ila, but those are pure coincidences, I swear it.

My name is based on my long-standing Everquest character, who was a High Elf named Ealandariel. I didn't want something quite so elvish when I joined here, so I made it Ealandrelle instead. It sounded more "Wheel-of-Timey" :p Melyma is a deliberate mis-spelling of "melima" which means "loveable", "fair" (or "beloved") in Quenya Elvish.

Satrim is just the first thing that popped into my head when I was trying to think up a name, I liked it, so I used it. As for Kha'os, it's just a twisted verion of the word chaos. Just drop the apostrophe and swap the 'K' for a 'C'.

Simple really.

Well, Roheryn comes from Tolkien's works, it is Sindarin for "horse(or steed) of the lady). It is the name of Aragorn's horse in the books. I've been using it online for at least twelve years.
When I needed a last name, I was bopping around on the internet, and found an old (now defunct) WoTMUD name generator. It generated 100 names at a time in different styles based on a mathematical algorithm and names from the series. I had it generate 100 female Aiel names. Galghandhrei sounded more like a last name to me, so I used it :D
