Hiring a private person to make shawls....

So our ajah is thinking of hiring a professional seamstress to make our ajah shawls. What are the (if any) legal issues in regards to this? It is my assumption that we can get the shawls made by a professional, but she cannot just blatantly put up in her "store" that she is making the shawls without a license from TOR. Can anyone please confirm? She is very nervous now. Thanks.

Miridy, are you asking if there are legal concerns from TarValon.Net, Inc.'s perspective? If so, the answer is no. You may hire whomever you choose to make shawls, socks, storm trooper armor, etc. as there is no professional relationship between the organization and any independent contractors of this type of good. Any deal that you make with a private individual is just that: private.

If you are asking about legal ramifications not related to our organization, you should consult a licensed attorney privately as to your options. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to e-mail me at administration@ and I will try to steer you further.

Thanks Calypsa, I thought that was true. I told her that I thought as long as she didn't advertise that she is making WOT shawls for anyone and everyone through her website, then it shouldn't be an issue. However, we could hire her to make shawls for individuals or our group. I was concerned about the logo for the shawl, but quite frankly, it is half of the Chinese Symbol for Yin and Yang if I remember correctly. Anyway, thanks so much!!

***I am not a lawyer. What I am about to say is only what I learned on my own from selling on Etsy.***

From my understanding she can not use any trademarked names, like Wheel of Time, Aes Sedai, etc, and if a picture is copyrighted she can't sell that either. I don't know if the flame on the shawl is copyrighted though. It is a basic symbol that appears in other cultures (I believe) so that may make a difference. If the flame isn't copyrighted though then she should be able to sell the shawls, as long as she makes no claim to them being related in any way to Wheel of Time or any of that. Just selling shawls, that's all. So that might be something you want to look into.

***Again I am NOT a lawyer, this is just from my understanding through my own sales***
