I echo Darim's first and second posts in this thread!

I view this forum like a press conference to the stakeholders of tarvalon.net. In a press release you do your initial announcement and then open yourself up to questions/comments. If questions were not meant to be asked then perhaps site announcements should be view only.

Asking a question like Darim did is equivalent to that person in class that answers "No" when the teachers asks "Is everyone ready to move on?" He might have been the only person to post something, but that does not mean he was the only person who was thinking they were not ready. The information he asked for was absent from the initial announcement.

I would not hire my brother at my work because I have known him for 21 years, if I didn't think he could do the job, but in explaining why I hired him to anyone I would have stated his professional qualifications related to the position like his degree in Computer Science, and his ability to destroy cities with lasers from his eyes.

Congrats to you Riley! I am sure you are the right person!

Riley,

I only met you this year at Anni, but I simply KNOW this is a great role for you, even from that. Aside from all his other qualifications, the man knows his A/V equipment! :D

In all seriousness, though, this is "Site Announcements". Both words are key: "Site",meaning things here have to do with TarValon.Net itself in some direct fashion, and "Announcements", which does NOT evoke the idea of a press conference. In fact, a billboard, flier, radio blurb, television ad, etc, are all one-way forms of communication, and are all forms of "Announcements".

The sole difference here is that this is a forum, so we get to make commentary if we feel like it. I think the idea that our commentary affects the decisions that are announced here is almost entirely an illusion. On the other hand, the idea that our commentary, used poorly, can hurt the feelings of others in our community is entirely valid, as well as the idea that our commentary, used well, can reinforce and bolster our community.

Fancifully, you could say this is like if we were a bunch of folks gathered at the base of the billboard, discussing amongst ourselves what it said. Indeed, the person/people who decided what to announce can (and often do) join us and talk with us about it, but that billboard was put up there as an announcement - which is to say, it's been decided. How we respond to that decision makes the difference in how well our community deals with it.

Actually I will back Darim and Mathei in that even if an announcement is made, a member should be able to ask a decent and quantifiable question.

Thank you to Ari/Ginger for being a most amazing friend and CFO.

Also I concur that Riley is not only qualified by being a long standing member serving in many different capacities, but also has the education and background to make a good CFO.

Lastly...after having attended a few board meetings...I think he will be a most definite calming and standing voice and a very welcome addition. Riley you rock and I adore my Starbucks buddy...don't forget me :( when it is coffee time at anni.

To Aldus:

If this site wants to be a nonprofit and incorporated, a topic in the site announcements thread indicating that they have chosen a new CFO is particularly newsworthy and would go in the press room of any corporate website. I am actually surprised it hasn't been published to tarvalon.net but my feeling is that that story will wait till after the paperwork has been turned in and approved.

A stakeholder is a person, group, organization, or system who affects or can be affected by an organization's actions. I consider myself one of those, as I do care what happens with this site. What would happen if everyone with an account at tarvalon left, to leave everyone who is in the administration by themselves? I am fairly certain the site would die just like the thousands of other internet forum sites that have come and gone. What makes tar valon different is people caring.

I maintain that if this announcements thread were as you described it would be view only unless someone had some spray paint.

No, I agree that y'all were right in asking. That information should have been included in the initial posting. It's why I answered the question here, rather than taking it to PM - it was a fair question, and if one was thinking it, several more probably were as well and just didn't ask. It wasn't a question meant to start debate or to incite riots, and it wasn't a complaint or bitching about something that the person didn't like. It was asking for clarification about why a specific person was qualified to hold a specific position that relies on knowledge and experience in a tangible field that has a direct effect on the quality of our organization. I didn't mind answering the question.

It hasn't been announced outwardly because our Tower Voice is on vacation, and I have taken over her duties, and keeping up with internal announcements as they happen immediately is not high on my priorities right now.
