My Resignation as Amyrlin

Oh no... This makes me so so sad... :cry

Mother you've been a huge inspiration to me and you've worked so hard on this community I've called home for the last 5 years. I wouldn't be even half of the same person I am today without TarValon.net.

I never had the chance to meet you face to face but I truly wish and hope that you will continue to stick around and that you're not leaving us entirely. Our community won't be the same without you as our Amyrlin Seat...

You will be so greatly missed.

Sorry, but I simply don't believe you. If you tell us again tomorrow or next week, I'll take it seriously. Now, though.... Nope. You people pulled a stunt last year too, with a long post in Site Announcements, follow-ups and at least some of the Admins in on it and backing it. You can pull off some pretty elaborate April Fools jokes, and I'm convinced this is another one.

If you are serious, then I will apologize for not believing in you..... Tomorrow.

Some levity is needed, as others have pointed out, to balance the understandable sadness at having to accept change that none of our selfish selves wants to deal with. I knew the day would come, but not when, and while I have so much to thank you for, personally, Melissa, I think it's time for you to have some of the things that I've gotten to have because of you- love, a family, and a life I didn't ever think I'd get to experience. I will cry along with everyone else next year when we have a new Amyrlin Seat- tears of sadness to see you step down, and tears of joy to welcome our new Amyrlin. What you have begun, I fully look forward to many years of enjoying watching it bloom under your watchful eye, even if it isn't you at the helm any longer.

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for giving more of yourself than any of us could ever ask or expect, and for still loving us enough to give us a year to learn to let you go a little. As many of my Sisters have said already, I look forward to having you as a Sister, and seeing you have time both for the site and for life. Thank you for caring enough about the world to want to make this so much more than just a fansite, but a chance to allow people from all over to meet and band together to create positive change around us. Thank you for letting us interfere in your personal time with our own petty wants and needs, for biting your lip and revising posts and PMs half a dozen times before sending the final "diplomatic" copy even when sending the original would have felt SO MUCH BETTER, and thank you for just being YOU. You and Patrick are always welcome for a quiet weekend up here in Michigan if you ever have the urge to visit, and Jaim and I look forward to many more chats and visit at future gatherings to come.

Sorry to have picked your post, as you weren't the only one to say it - but to everyone who did --- To me your time stamp on your posts is april 2nd ... when this thread started the time stamp for me it was april 1 ... and mid morning April 1, so it was probably posted late night on the 30th or early morning on the 31st of March as I'm ahead of you all ... the timing was off by a day or two ... but it wasn't posted on April 1 for anyone other on +GMT times (so if you're on a -GMT time, then yeah it's still april 1st, but if you look at the time stamp, it wasn't posted on april 1 and when it was posted the site wasn't on this stupid font) .... and as as I said it was posted at 9.49am and I'm GMT+10 There would have been very FEW people who will see the time stamp as April 1 - it'll only be other Australians and New Zealanders (I THINK - seeing as to me your time stamp says "Eireann Namar » Sat Apr 02, 2011 6:14 am" so it's past april fools, when I see your post :/ *shrug*)... so that's a bit harsh .. and I have to say the same thing as someone else said, it's unlikely to be an Aprils Fools as it was a) posted PRIOR to April 1st ... b) been seconded, thirded and posted in multiple places ... and c) Mel has already said "only I could post this so close to April fools that you'd get it confused for one" or something along those lines then confirmed it was NOT an april fools. and further, Dralyn Sedai would not have said at 7am April 2ND that it was real, if it was an april fools, it'd be time to fess up to the joke - especially as you guys are dragging out april fools - it's supposed to end at midday april 1, not go all day! - different rant )

I believe it is true ... and I'm sad to see her go ... I got to know Melissa well when I first joined in Jan 2004, when the site was smaller and you had time to be more active ... and most recently in that cursed merit badge task force thing ... and even when I straight out told you off for something, you had the grace to see the truth of it and not rip me to shreds like some others would and accepted what was and set about fixing it - and THAT I believe has always been your strongest point - when you know you're right you stick to your guns ... when a flaw is pointed out - you set about fixing it, you don't just shrug your shoulders and say "live with it" you have always steped up to the plate in my eyes, and that makes it even harder for your successor to possess that quality is a hard one, for anyone to accept they made a booboo is rather embarrassing, and digs at the pride a little, when you know you're right and it's carried off, then the pleasure of it must be unmeasurable in words ...

And although it will be very strange not to see you at the helm, just as it is strange when the keeper changes ... that doesn't mean it's "bad" ... SAD for sure ... And I'm probably still going to call you Mother - by habit ... hopefully I will get into the groove of calling your successor Mother quickly before I get too many floggings but as someone said before, there are things NOONE can take from you, you founded this site, you worked hard with your Board to turn a myboards (or whatever those old crappy boards were called :P - and if I recall on that site, the Ajah's had to sign in AGAIN on another set of boards to access the "blue" "yellow" etc, they weren't part of the main site - the 3rd upgrade to the site, I'm STILL getting used to, I was so used to the second, but you've been improving our lot as much as you can along the way, not just in board design and such but in the actually running of the show and all the behind the scenes stuff) anyway, you turned a cute little blue and black (pretty sure it was blue and black) website into a mighty impressive site we're on now that's not just a website but a not for profit corporation! few people could have achieved what you have, and you've achieved all your 'pipe dreams' - who else can say that? And although I know you didn't do it alone, you had your board, and your keeper for support, you took this site to a place and past it where most sites would collapse ...

The New Amyrlin will have his/her work cut out for them though - maintinging a book site once the book series is over, is a hard thing to do, but this has long surpased being a simple 'fan site' and is well intrenched as a family, so there will be a lot of us who simply WILL NOT abandon ship until the site is shut down ... which I can't see your board directors allowing to happen anytime soon ... plus I imagine (Seeing as you simply said you're stepping down, not that you'd SOLD the site) you will still OWN the site, the rights, and so on, and as such, ultimately if something goes horribly wrong, it will still fall to you to fix it (I'm thinking the business side of things not the running of the boards themselves) you simply just will have someone else doing the upper management work???

So as has been said, you're NOT dead ... the site isn't DEAD ... life will go on, and you will have time for you, instead of being Mother Hen to over 1000 people Although I am sad to see you step down, I also look forward to seeing who steps up into your shoes and if they will be all that we expect - because guys, lets face it, there will be occassions when someone will say "BUT MELISSA WOULD HAVE DONE IT THIS WAY!!! WHAT ARE YOU DOING!!!" which is unfair, but no doubt it will happen ... to me, it'd be a hella scary thing to step up into those shoes!

You've done a wonderful job Mother, and I hope you are content and satisfied with your decision, and all goes well for you when you move on to greener pastures

You have always been, and will always be, the heart and soul of this community. Its been a wonderful 5 years getting to know you and reaping the fruits of this community. With the close friendships I've formed over the years, you've given me a priceless gift. Its one that I'll always be grateful for. Its been an honor and a privilege to number you amongst my friends. I wish you only the best of luck and the easiest of roads in your journey ahead.
