After 17 years of devotion the Wheel of Time, and almost complete isolation from other WoT fans, I've finally crawled out of my literary hole to seek community with some like-minded individuals. My severe lack of WoT-loving friends has been a bit of a sore spot for years now - while I have friends who are interested in similar books, themes, etc., very few of them have ever 'tackled' this series. I've always wanted someone to talk to about it! I'm not typically a forum-surfing type, but I thought I'd try something new! So this is my personal beginning here.
I have read the series through three times, though admittedly my last 'full' reread was over 5 years ago. When Brandon Sanderson took up the mantle I didn't feel the need to reread everything each time he released a volume. I am currently a full-time Nursing student, and this is my second go-round through college. I *might* have figured out what I want to be when I grow up this time. Or, I might just give up on the notion of ever truly 'growing up.' Sounds boring anyways...
Moving on. Was A Memory of Light all that I thought it would be? Not entirely. Did it have its glorious moments? Yes. Did parts of it make me cry like a baby? You bet...
At the end of the emotional roller coaster I took some time to reflect on what this world and its characters mean to me. I feel like they are friends, companions, and enemies that will always walk with me, and have ever since I was a teenager first clutching those heavy volumes. Mr. Rigney's vision and depth of storytelling shaped my younger years - more than once I dressed up as an Aes Sedai for Halloween, even though no one had any idea of what I was. The music I had playing in the background while reading, still, to this day, evokes memories of Myrddraal and dark hounds in the night if I hear it in passing on the radio, or in a store.
When I finished reading AMOL I posted this on my Facebook: "Thank you Mr. Rigney for your words and creativity, for the pattern, the wheel, and all the love and battles in between. Also, thank you Mr. Sanderson, for delivering to us an ending that I never thought would come." An ending... but not the ending.
With one year left in this course of my education, I'm already chafing at the bit to start a thorough reread of the series, start to finish (y'know, now that that's a thing we can do). I would love to meet some interesting folks here, and one day I aspire to attend JordanCon! My real name is Rachael, but in the spirit of fun and all that is tarvalon.net, I'll be quite happy to go by my chosen WoT pseudonym that I've used for years - Aleyna.
Well met friends.
