I suppose a lot of the deaths drove home for me that life doesn't play fair.

Yes, that is it exactly. There were so many who died - Hurin, Romanda, etc. - who weren't huge parts of the story but who were still important, and so many of those died "regular" deaths (meaning nothing overly heroic). But that is what made it so real for me. I loved all of it even though it broke my heart again and again.

Hm... interesting question. The death that shocked me most, I think had to be Gareth and Siuan together. I should have seen it coming. And yet it totally caught me off guard. I cheered when Demandred died. Honestly, that scene was one of my absolute favourites in the entire series. Also Slayer, because that went on forever and I was happy he finally got what was coming to him haha The death that really crushed my spirit I think was Gawyn. Not because Gawyn died, he deserved it. But that he died in Galad's arms. That Egwene did her best to rescue her stupid husband, and it wasn't enough.

Also Bela. WHYYYYYYY

Almost half the most notable characters in the series died! Egwene, Galad, Siuan Sanche, Gareth Bryne, Gawyn, Birgitte, all those Forsaken, Rhuarc, Bela, and more.

What makes you think of them as less notable? Each of them played a huge role in the series, and certainly deserve a hero's burial and a fond farewell.
I thought Galad survived

I suppose a lot of the deaths drove home for me that life doesn't play fair. I have this slightly romantic notion that anyone who dies fighting on the "good" side should have a heroic, meaningful death. To be over-run because the plans have gone wrong (or were Graendal-fluenced to go wrong ;)) or just being in the wrong place at the wrong time... that irks me. I felt that Siuan had suffered so much, regardless of how a lot of it came from her own scheming. It was lovely to FINALLY have her with Bryne after they danced around each other for book after book. So to have her just suddenly be dead, because Min's viewing hadn't been fulfilled after all, that felt... cheap. But I suppose that really is the reality of a large-scale battle.

I agree. And while that's true...I guess I come back to -- this isn't REAL large-scale battle -- this is an epic fantasy novel with an existential battle between good and evil. The epically good should have...epic deaths. And even if we needed one or two 'real' deaths among the cast of characters, did we need Siuan AND Byrne AND Rhurac AND Bashere AND Hurin ...etc. etc. to get "meh" exits? Really the best exit (Lan) turned out to not be an exit at all. :/ D.GOOCH

Most tragic deaths for me:
Egwene as I've always liked her. Even at her most dense moments.
Siuan as she was a rock, a labourer and such a strong personality.
Romanda... and that was a surprise to me. I didn't like her much, but I respected her.
Bela because she was Bela. She was a true hero and saved our people time and time again.
Hurin

I cheered when the following died:
Demandred, my nemisis
Lanfear as she is better of dead poor woman.

Also, I was very worried about Berelain when she went to Lan with the medallion. I was so sure she would be killed off at that point. I've always liked her for somer reason. I think it might be because she represented such a small city state, but had such a big presence... But I'm going of topic, so I'll stop now :).

Thanks to people not tagging their spoilers on Tumblr, I knew about Egwene and Bela, so I was pretty much just waiting for them. I saw Gawyn's from a mile away, having been yelling "YOU EEDIOT" the whole time... Birgitte, just being like BAM, DEAD, got me though...I literally dropped the Kindle at that point. Also Rhuarc's compulsion shocked me quite a bit.

I won't lie, I cheered when Gawyn bit it. He has been a thorn in my side since book 3. So judgy! So righteous! Shut up already! I was always disappointed when Egwene fell so hard for him but was glad when she called him out on not treating her properly as the Amyrlin.

Anyway, I wasn't upset by Bella. By this time, knowing she had been Tam's "faithful old mare" and then around the world a couple of times for a couple of years, she wasn't a spring chicken. It was time.

Or am I just rationalizing?

Anika, never talk to me again :look:

Bela's death made me throw the book on the bed... For a second, before I picked it up again and continued reading :look:

Egwene! I totally expected her to live for 500 years as she said to Tuon (which in hindsight was clear foreshadowing). I had to reread the part to be sure I had not misread it.

And I absolutely did not expect Cadsuane to survive, I thought she was a goner. But I laughed when they made her Amyrlin.

She's my least favorite character. She's a bitch, and nothing she did was good. Everything backed fire, which made me question why on earth the other Aes Sedai treated her like a queen. She's nothing but a bully.
