Re: Favourite scenes from the series

My favorite scenes, not sure if in that order:
1. When Mat and Perrin catch Rand with the Dragon banner, in TGH. I really like the early books, and TGH is my favorite book in the series, and I think by far the best.
2. Rand finding Thom in Cairhien. Basically I think I like Thom the best of all the characters. I keep telling people who play D&D that if they want to see how a bard is SUPPOSED to be played, they should read Thom's character in TWoT series.
3. Egwene's dinner with Elaida, in TGS. Great scene. Basically Egwene ROCKS in TGS.
4. Rand meets Amyrlin Egwene. Or should I say LTT meets Amyrlin Egwene.
5. Rand telling Cadsuane she can call him Rand Sedai. It was just in the last book, and already is a classic! Also basically every zen Rand scene. He's pure WIN!
6. Basically the whole begining of the series, before the Trolloc attack on the Two Rivers.

I think my favorite scene is Rand and Nynaeve are cleansing saidin. Aes Sedai in the tower, and other locations sensing the use of the Power. To me, that was an impressive visual in my head.

My favorite scene was when Moiraine, Lan, Rand, Matrim, Perrin, Nynaeve, and Egwene left Emond's Field. I have no idea why.:cheeseeni:

Wow, this is the hardest question ever... I like everyone elses answers but I cannot answer this myself as I think my brain would go into some sort of overload and either explode or implode if I thought about the question too in depth... sooo I will give a very simple answer of any scene with either Mat or Egwene (and even that is putting my brain on the verge of exploding!)

Hmmm, favorite scenes...

1. Rand on top of Dragonmount, and the subsequent scene with the apple farmer in book 13.

2. Mat's first battle outside Cairhien.

3. Moiraine's retelling of the story of Manatheren.

4. Perrin's night at the blacksmith's for the first time since leaving the Two Rivers.

5. Perrin and Faile's first night together.

6. The scene where Perrin forges his hammer.

I could go on for awhile, but I think I will stop there, heh.

Re: Favourite scenes from the series

Brand new member to tarvalon.net, here, but a long-time fan of the series (I picked up EOTW in 1998, and have posted previously [though infrequently] on the old usenet group and at tor.com). I saw this and thought I'd register with your fine site and share a few thoughts of my own.

Favorite scenes (a selection, not an exhaustive list; and numbered only to distinguish them, not to rank them):

1. Perrin forging Mjolnir (I know that's not the WOT spelling, but it's the clear source for the name). I've read this scene 20 times at least, even though in my copy of the hardback TOM the pages flip upside down midway through the chapter! The sense of working through the problem, of accepting the inevitable, and of finally taking on the of his own free will the mantle of leadership that had been thrust upon him long, long ago was incredibly gratifying to read. And it was written brilliantly.

2. Perrin in the blacksmith's shop. Perrin is one of my favorite characters, hence the repetition. But this scene was so wonderfully written, with the sense of ease that Perrin has in the shop, and the little details about the various quenching values of oil, fresh water, and salt water (I have no idea of their accuracy - I choose to trust RJ got it right unless anyone sets me straight) that it was a little idyl in the midst of great tension.

3. "Kneel before the Dragon Reborn, or you will be knelt". Randland changed forever on that day. And knowing what we know of M'Hael now (and have strongly suspected for a long time), it wasn't for the better.

4. Mat and Birgitte drinking together, and Birgitte's reaction later with Elayne and Nynaeve. Mat gets some recognition for how awesome he his and how fearlessly and loyally he came to the rescue, and the wonder girls get a (much needed, at the time) comeuppance to make them realize that there are others out there who are fighting the good fight and performing brave, important, good deeds.

5. Mat surprising Perrin with a badger. Despite it's brevity, this scene was one of my favorites in TOM. It felt so good to see these two together again, recognizing all the changes they had individually gone through, but also recognizing that they were still in some ways the same. And I absolutely loved the fact that Mat actually DID catch a badger. A great humorous scene.

6. The very beginning (prologue to EOTW). This scene did a lot to draw me into the first book, and therefore the series. I think the evocative language that Jordan uses and the hints of glories and horrors left dangling to be fleshed out later were phenomenal. It definitely created an instant interest, and the rest is history.

7. Nynaeve rallying the Borderlanders (and specifically, ex-Malkeiri) to Lan's cause. Reading "The Golden Crane flies for Tarmon Gaidon!" literally brought tears to my eyes.

8. Ingtar's last stand. Faust's greatest flaw was the assumption that he was beyond redemption. Ingtar realizes otherwise, and shows courage and honor in his last act.

9. The wayback machine. Oh my God! The first time (and every time) I've read this, I've been amazed. How does an author come up with this?! A complete, logical progression of a culture from one extreme to the other. The origins of all the Aiel's customs and quirks, in a way that is terrible to behold and wonderfully, wonderfully written. Leigh Butler has posited that this is a retelling of the Fall of Man, and I can see that, although it's much more drawn out over time and space than the typical Fall stories are. Nevertheless, this is one of the most stunning pieces of writing I have ever read, and I'm blown away every time I go back and reread it.

10. The wayforward machine. Oh my goodness gracious, they did it again! I keyed in pretty early in the narrative that this was the FUTURE, rather than the PAST, but this was still amazing to behold. What a nihilistic future we see for the Aiel. Once again, we have a logical progression of a culture, this time into destitution and despair. My theory is that the key turning point in preventing this from coming to fruition is Rand kneeling at the feet of the Empress. This is what Avienda must prevent Rand from doing to save her people. I hope she does, though I'm not sure we'll ever get a conclusive answer of what the future holds for the Aiel.

11. The Healing of Logain. Our girl Nynaeve does the "impossible" and changes the world in the process. I love the inner monologue she goes through, and the "Oh shit!" moment she has when she realizes what she's done.

12. The cleansing of the Taint. This is the first time in the series that the Light-side characters really win a BIG, protracted battle. Obviously the cleansing itself is gigantic in its implications, but I love all the little battles, with Cadsuane detecting channeling and directing fire, Alivia nuking a mountaintop, and all of the other little victories that our heroes achieved against the Shadow-side in that scene.

I think an even dozen is enough. I'll stop for now. I've read the prologue to AMOL, and didn't include any Talmanes scenes out of spoiler-reduction, but I'll be looking forward to other opinions as we march toward Jan 8 and the end of all time (for this story, anyways)!

Re: Favourite scenes from the series

My favorite scene is when Mat surprises Perrin in the woods and quotes book one with letting the badger go on the village green. I laughed out loud at that. Such a wonderful bit to show that the boys have changed, but they are still in some ways the way they were. Well Mat, at least ha!

Nynaeve recruiting for Lan. I was crying at that scene because I was just so damn proud of her.

Which, I guess, is kind of embarrassing for me, but whatever. :P

My favourite moments are the early Cadsuane 'You're-the-Dragon-Reborn-and-I-treat-you-like-a-little-boy-moments. So sad they disappeared later on, but they had to go...

Of all time, a tie between Nynaeve healing Suian, The cleansing of the taint, Dumai's Wells, and the fight that finishes with Moiraine and Lanfear going through the arch.

I think that the greatest moment for me was at the end of Lord of Chaos when Rand breaks free from his prison and causes all the Aes Sedai there to submit to him. It is there that he becomes a man of his own destiny and breaks the shackles of all who try to make him to submit to their own machinations. This was so exciting and rewarding to see all those Aes Sedai fall to their knees and swear allegiance to the only man who could save them all from ultimate destruction. Best part of the series. My other favorite, though outside of books 1-11 is at the end of 12

when Rand finds himself on Dragonmount and releases his anger, learning about the purpose of the wheel and rebirth and coming to terms with Lews Therin as himself. That was the other best!

I love when Tuon finds out Mat is a great general, not just a Toy. That's one of my favorite storylines (I think its book 11:look:). Also when the Two Rivers longbow mow down the Shaido.

A minor scene I like is Verin talking to Cadsuane(<3) and deciding not to poison her.

"It was good to finally be sure."

Haha, oh, man, I love that scene. Especially on this, my first reread since starting the Sanderson books. XD

I have to say my favorite ALL time moments was the battle at the end of the Great Hunt with Rand fighting in the sky, and Dumai Wells when we really learned what true battle channeling was all about :)
