I loved A Memory of Light and enjoyed reading it from a crisp, new-smelling hardcover.

Still, I'm excited to reread the book when it's released in ebook format on April 9. Since I'm greedy I'd be perfectly happy if a never-before-seen piece depicting a new scene by a new artist was used as the ebook cover.

In this hypothetical artwork I'd rather a moment with Rand. Something off-course with Thom Merrilin or Loial or Olver might be tasteful and nostalgiac; I'd still choose Rand.

Sweet's half-finished painting was also very beautiful and I'd love for his work to be used. Actually I find myself rooting for that, despite also wanting new artwork.

I'm surprised you like the Sweet cover, I thought it was pretty much his usual standard in which "quite poor" would be being kind to it.

Must be a continuity thing. If you have collected hardcover books for a particular series and then the publisher switches the theme of the cover art, it looks silly on a book shelf. For this reason alone, I would have taken a Sweet cover for Memory of Light.

That's because D. K. Sweet didn't do this cover art.

Michael Whelan did.

Ok, well, not sure what to say about all this exactly...

:arch

Sweet's yet-unused cover was better than, say, Lord of Chaos and Knife of Dreams in that it actually set an appropriate tone for the book and stoked anticipation for the ending without really giving anything away. Though, admittedly, I didn't get from the last scene that Rand's funeral pyre was some fifteen feet off the ground.

Still, a new cover by a new artist would be a nice reward for having to wait four months for the eBook release.

Can we get links to the pieces we're talking about here? I feel like I'm missing something:cheeseeni:

Thanks folks :) After seeing Sweet's drawing, I'm not really sure which one I like better. I know my initial reaction to Sweet's would have been WTF? He died? They lost? Why are there only three people left in the world, and did they really cop out and make only those three survive in order to fulfill Min's vision? WTF??? But at the end I would have totally understood why he did what he did with it. (that's pretty similar to every reaction I've ever had to WoT cover art, so I'd have been ok with either cover I guess.) I wonder if there was more he was going to add before he passed?

Whelan's seems more symbolic, and I'm ok with that considering this is the end of an era.

But I think Sweet probably deserves the ebook cover because dammit, it feels wrong for his work not to have been included. Death didn't stop the books from being finished, it shouldn't have stopped the intended cover from being used.

That's my reasoning. But since a new piece would probably be something more polished (and action-oriented? at least of a different scene) I guess we have a win/win on our hands. Except for the people who hate the DKS cover, of course.

Isn't Nynaeve's hair the wrong color? I thought everyone from the Two Rivers had dark hair/eyes except Rand?

Are you talking about the actual cover? This?

If so, her hair is brown...ish.
If you're talking about Sweet's cover, I think it's supposed to be Elayne, Aviendha, Min per Min's long-standing viewing. In which case, there is still the question of when Min's hair got so long...

okay my book has the two women on the back cover, which are obviously Moiraine and Nynaeve backing Rand up with saidar as he attempts to enter into the bore. And I am glad that someone mentioned nynaeve's hair color, which is absolutely true. It is absolutely mentioned that her hair is dark many times, and it is distinguished that Nynaeve is the one with the cropped hair as the book metions her haircut several times. How does that make it past the publishers? The effrontery! What kind of use for the mirror of masks is that?
