It was because, even if Thom had killed the King, then the guy vying for position would have been raised to King. But he was killed due to some pretty wicked forces (I can't remember if it was a gholam, forsaken, or what) after they realized he had let Rand go.

I'd say Thom is the straw that broke the camel's back that caused the civil war, which is very significant. There would have probably been a civil war anyway, but maybe not in such extraordinary fashion.

And Thom killed Morgase's husband/Moiraine's cousin (Taringail Damodred) before the books start, because Taringail was planning to have Morgase killed. Morgase didn't seem to really like him, if I remember right, she married him because he'd been Tigraine's husband and it gave her a link to Tigraine (Tigraine would have been queen when Mordrellen died if she hadn't gone to the Waste; since Mordrellen died before choosing an heir, it caused a succession and Morgase needed to solidify her political position).

I have a question. I just finished my reread of WH for, like, the 3rd time, and at the scene at the end, Cadsuane and the rest are using the one power to fire in all directions, whereever they feel someone channeling... How is that possible? Without knowing who it is that used the power, aren't the 3 oaths supposed to keep them from using the power as a weapon?

I think that falls within two of the loopholes. One, they know that whoever is channeling is a darkfriend, or else they wouldn't be there and channeling (I believe that's a stipulation for that rule). The other, which I think applies even more is that it's in the defense of their lives or that of their warder. They know that anyone channeling near them has the sole purpose of taking them out, and as quickly as possible, which allows them to react just as quickly.

Interesting... Lanfear DID strike first... So I suppose once she striked, it would be considered self defense?
That would make sense, but after that they fired at male forsaken, before they attacked, without knowing for sure who was channeling.

Right, but it's all about perception. If they felt like that person was about to kill them and had full ability to unless they channeled in a way that would deal the other harm, then they could, no matter what the reality of the situation was.

Most of my surprise finds are action sequences. I forgot about the group running from the flying monster in book one and about Mat being attacked by the Aile in book six. I am at the edge of my seat each time I read because so much is happening.
