Welcome to TarValon.Net! That was quite a thorough introduction.

I am delighted to see all the new interest in things because of the show. Speaking of that and of gaming, I wonder if we'll see an official update to the RPG as a result! I've already had a player or two ask me about maybe running something in Randland (we usually do Forgotten Realms, which has been my favorite setting for many years), and although I have the old 3.x era book, most of my players are either ex-2e players who jumped straight to 5e or native 5e players, and I've long since forgotten most of what I ever knew about 3.x.
I was about to point you to Aulrick's work, but I see you've already found it! I love the Discussion Halls, it seems like there's a place for every topic.

Welcome to Tar Valon Viktara!! It’s great to have you here. I really loved reading your Introduction, it was a lot of fun. I, unfortunately, wasn’t yet alive for those AOL chat rooms. They sound awesome!! We have some similar shenanigans that happen every now and then.

Have you read anything by Brandon Sanderson? If you haven’t, I can’t recommend him enough.

So many folks from Texas! :)

What I remember of them was a lot of fun. I seem to remember a lot of snorting and giggling over whether Bela was the Creator, the Dark One, or what, as well as lots of silly songs and jokes. ;) That said, I am super happy to have found this community! I look forward to getting to know folks and having a great time.

I haven't yet read anything by Sanderson, but he's been recommended to me before. Aside from his work on WoT, do you have any favorite works you'd suggest for a newcomer to his stuff?

I’d recommend Mistborn, as it’s not as intense as his Magnum Opus, Stormlight Archive, and it introduces a lot of the main ideas of his Cosmere/larger universe. The cool thing about his fantasy works is that they are all connected in some form or fashion. If you don’t want to invest in a trilogy, I recommend Warbreaker, which is a standalone.

welcome and hello from another Central Texan!

the other day i was just thinking I should read Feist because I never have…

I love Sanderson but it’s funny because despite so many people I know thinking Mistborn is amazing, it’s the one thing of his I’m not really a fan of. but the good thing about Sanderson is that he has a wide range of books and even if you don’t like one series you might love another.

and this is not my normal avatar. just in case you were wondering, lol.

Thanks for the recommendations! Also good to know about trilogy versus standalone books. Next time I permit myself to go cavorting at B&N here in town or make a plunder run through like half a dozen Half-Price Books stores in Austin, I'll be on the look-out.

Thank you! And may I just say, Siusane Sedai, that although I have no idea what's going on in your avatar, I think it's glorious?

Yo, what the heck.

Seriously, welcome to the site!

About reading TGH all in one day? If I recall correctly, I bought the book on a Friday night right after school, then spent the evening at a football game (I was in the marching band and had to perform at the game), got home around midnight and went to sleep. I got up very early the next morning, started reading, and didn't stop until late that night when I was done. I remember simply being unable to quit turning pages...which I guess is a good sign. :reading

This time around, I took considerably longer than a day to make my way through--about 10 days, with holiday and work interruptions.

Welcome, there are a number of us in Central Texas. We've been talking about having a "local" event for sometime. Texas Ren Faire is always a possibility, assuming Covid ever allows it.

:hugI hope your next day will be better, and that you are enjoying your re-read (was so heartwarming to read about you and your spouse connecting over the re-read in the mornings:pleased-1:). I am a new reader (soon finished book four), and also like Perrin’s wolf connection. After watching the show, I also grew a soft spot for Moiraine, but my all time favorite so far is still Loial.
Oh.. Hi, and welcome to TV! :joy

Thanks, folks! I hope today will be better as well, and that everyone here has a great day!

Ahh, I have missed faire! Between trying to keep safe from The Plague and my previous job, which only let me have one faire-season weekend off in all of three years (ugh), I haven't been with any regularity in ages. This coming year, assuming things improve, I'm hoping to hit Sherwood during its opening several weeks, go to Scarby up in Waxahachie (home faire for me) for as many weekends as is feasible, and TRF of course in the fall. I'd hoped to make TRF this year, but the spouse and I had our doubts about surging case numbers, so we decided to play it safe, to our infinite grumpitude. If anybody else will be there, it would be fun to at least wave and say hello!

Hello! :) We are in about the same place on our read-throughs. I am still working my way through Book Four and hope to be done by this time next week. Loial is a great character, and he is always so much fun to read about. I think he and I would have a lot in common, especially when it comes to wanting to sit around and reading books in comfy, quiet places.

You make a really great point about Moiraine in the show. It really did cast her in a more sympathetic light, I think, and we see how many risks she is taking and just how devoted she is to her mission. I don't want to accidentally spoil anyone who hasn't gotten very far along, so I'll leave it at that.
