I was wondering if there was a resource like a catalogue of every clothing item that's been described in the books. I've seen what's at the Thirteenth Depository and that's of course incredibly thorough, but not quite like what I'm picturing.

I'm interested of course in what the clothes generally look like, but I also want to see if a character tends to prefer certain cuts, certain colors, styles of embroidery, etc, and what that might mean for their character. I saw a post on tumblr recently that delved into the meaning of the costume colors for the characters, and it was interesting the connection between Denethor's black+gray and how those colors reflect how much control he has over others (Faramir wears green until he rides out on his father-ordered suicide mission, Pippin putting on the squire costume, etc).

If this resource already exists, point me at it, but if not ... I might be making a spread sheet of every single time clothing/accessories are mentioned on my next read-through.

Ummm that would be awesome, Aratouial!!

All I know is Nynaeve wears blue and green because Lan likes those colours :look: I do think there are characters mentioned who wear more embroidery and jewels and those who wear plainer dresses to show personality differences.

I've looked a lot at Thirteenth Depository, too. I was going to get my sister to draw up some fashions for the Borderlands (she's taken fashion drawing). So we'll see if that ever happens.

I had the exact same though the other day! But to my knowledge, it doesn't exist (yet).

Did you ever end up doing this by any chance?

I've been working on fashion articles in the Tar Valon Times. So far its been for New Spring, but as I read, I'm trying to note all clothing details. Would love to develop a spreadsheet of some kind. Excited to continue to explore this, and see what others have found.

so I found out I was pregnant pretty much a week after that, and now I have a 1-year-old, so .... no I never got around to doing that, lol. I do still want to, though.

No there is not. And believe me, I have LOOKED. I would actually love to make one and it was part of why I wanted to join the costume team. Maybe this is a thing that can happen since there seems to be some interest in it.

Didn't realize this was a necro-post!
Don't care! Doing it anyway :D Serendipitous necro-post!

Okay so say we were to make this a group project. How much detail would be good? I don't really know what the best format would be. How comprehensive would it be?

Example/potential working document:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1hJtWxPR-pMNqe87eBas6TmzznrysA4psU48YqdscPKk/edit?usp=sharing
(Anyone with the link can edit.)

I'm trying to figure out what good fields would be. I suppose if we're attaching everything to Library pages, the characters themselves would already be categorized. I was thinking having these fields might lend itself to filters like "show me all descriptions of Blue Aes Sedai clothing" or everyone from Cairhien.

I was also debating of putting all descriptions of the same outfit in the same chapter in one cell vs separate ones.

The spreadsheet is awesome.

I'd be willing to help with this. I've got a notebook put together for my read of New Spring.

Love the spreadsheet!

I do like the idea of having the clothing descriptions connected to multiple points-- character, organization, association, status, etc. I think we might need something like a tagging system?

Like, for example, everything starts with the clothing description, and then we have it tagged with all the above. When you click on the #Moiraine tag, or the #BlueAjah tag, for example, it would pull every relevant book quote. Thinking of ways use to Sheets for this kind of qualitative analysis ... I will ask my resident Excel witch and wizard if they've got an idea for how to organize it in a way that makes it easy to input the information and then filter it down for analysis later.

I’ll try to mess with it this weekend if Elania is ok with it and talk to some people and see if we can’t get something “official” rolling. Maybe create something to add to the library here? @Toral Delvar, thoughts?

I don't think we have such an article
We do have one on Clothing and Dress, but this is old, there have actually been several books since then and it was mostly based on the BWB, rather than examples fro the main series
https://library.tarvalon.net/index.php?title=Costume_and_Dress
I checked out the category to see if we had anything else, and didn't see it

Yes, let's make it a truly collaborative document! Change things, leave comments, chat, etc.

Also follow-up question, do we want to include complete sentences, or just the parts that are clothing-related.

Example:
Her eyes were pools of midnight, her skin creamy pale and surely softer, more smooth than her dress of white silk.
vs
...her dress of white silk.

Maybe leave it up to the person? If they think it matters to the style or dress, include it (like bells jingling in whichever country they wore the weird bells in their hair. Arad Doman?) But in the above description, I'd go with no.

Also, could we be systematic about it? Sign up for chapters so no one does double work accidentally, etc. Way back in the day when I was an ickle Accepted, we did a project similar in setup but much smaller in scope and catalogued all the food mentioned. We signed up for chapters and just did it when we could, then reported back with what we found.
