I'd think it would still have to be, surely. Even though there's some sense in which the two shards are opposing forces, they still form a single shard entity now, Harmony, which over time must gradually bend Sazed's personality to this new Intent. Though hopefully that will often work out for the best for the Cosmere.

I was thinking upon this later in the evening last night that he calls himself Harmony because he is balancing both Preservation and Ruin as a single shard as you say. Two sides of the same coin, so I do wonder if something could happen and turn that harmony into Discord. I think that's a viable thing that could happen.

I love how Wax just shoots the cobblestones and destroys them and only then realizes that this may not be a good idea.

It's a neat touch that, once Wax accepts his role as leader of his house, the narration starts referring to him as Waxillium.

Interesting. I had forgotten about the alumnimum-lined hats. So that implies that Soothers' and Rioters' abilities are directed as people's heads. A small thing, but I found it interesting.

I find it so fascinating how the mix of Allomancy and Feruchemy has created these interesting combinations :) The "bubble" effect is especially interesting.

I wonder, is Waynes bendalloy ability one of the remaining 2 metals that we didn't know existed in Era 1? I don't remember that being mentioned before...

And aluminum is an interesting metal. It doesn't need to be burned or stored Feruchemistly to be effective. It can protect anyone... It is almost as if it works as a copper cloud, but for everyone...

Yes, bendalloy is one of the ones that Vin et al didn't know about. :)

I really did enjoy when Wax fires his gun at the ground to use the pull to push off. Allomancy never ceases to be a lot of fun with this stuff.

Week 2

We're going to ramp up a little bit. This is the chunkiest section of the book, almost accounting for a third of it, but we can do it!

  • Marasi shows how perceptive she is by recognizing Wayne even in his disguise.
  • I love that Spook is referred to as the Lord Mistborn. :joy :love
  • I really enjoy the little touches in Sanderson’s novels that reinforce a sense of the world. Even little things like noticing how all of the quotes from Marasi’s instructors use masculine pronouns, since they live in a world where it’s very unusual for women to study law.
  • And Elendel is such a cool place! :joy Recreating the world to make that area so conducive to life and Spook’s requirement that only fruit-bearing trees are allowed in the city. It’s fascinating ‘cause in many ways it’s a typical city with that level of technology, but there are these little touches (such as the fruit trees and how Sazed modified the soil and stuff in the area) that make it a very hospitable place to live. As always, worldbuilding is one of my favorite parts of Sanderson’s stories. :)
Spoilers for later in the story:
It’s really cool reading this again knowing how much I grew to like Steris later in the series! I find myself reading her sections with special interest.

I really love the references to Mistborn trilogy characters, and how the religions have formed and changed. And the new way allomancy and feruchemy work.

Tillaume must have been pretty irked when Marasi ended up hanging out with Wax for so long. He only wanted to target Wax, after all. He probably didn't feel great about Marasi getting caught up in it.

  • I like Wax. :) He lives in a world where ‘supernatural’ entities exist (recently enough since the event of the Mistborn trilogy that they have anecdotal knowledge of Sazed reforming the world and how he did it), but he doesn’t jump to expect that everything is ‘gods’. He ‘prays’ to Harmony and feels like he receives answers, but he’s careful enough to know that confirmation bias exists. And he recognizes that it could apply to the answers he gets from Harmony.
  • I like that Sazed codified a liberal arts education into the Words of Founding. :pleased-1:
  • Ranette has a wheely chair! :D
  • One amusing side effect of Spook being so influential as a historical figure is that Luthadel street slang has become known as ‘High Imperial’.
Mr. Suit was initially hesitant to kill Wax, which makes sense given what we learn later.

I still love that Wayne does his equal exchange for items.

I don't understand this cover. Who is who here? Wax is described with a cravat, which I suppose is what the guy in front is wearing, though that looks a bit different than other cravats I've seen on pictures.
But the guy in the back? Sure, he has a hat, but Wax is also described with a bowler hat at the beginning. And, more importantly, the guy is holding a GUN. Wayne is very well known for not being able to handle guns. So then that must be Wax? But Wax is the "main" character. Why would the main character be in the back?

This is the kind of things I start thinking about late at night :look:

Yeah Brandon famously said, since he didn't have control over it beforehand, to "just assume Wayne is holding it for Wax."

and I've assumes the whole time Wax was the Tom Cruise looking guy, and Wayne was the hat guy with the gun.

I finally started reading it! Apparently I remember almost nothing at all from it.

So there are no Mistborn anymore, interesting. Also it sounds like if I understood correctly they still don't know all 16 metals? And if bendalloy is bismuth and cadmium, which one is its partner metal, bismuth or cadmium?
