This is something I've been thinking on for a while. It is discussed some in my thread about Slayer. This thread, and first post, will contain massive spoiler from a Memory of Light.

Firstly I haven't read the last book more than once and that was years ago. I'm doing a re-read now, currently starting A crown of swords soon, so I apologise if I make mistakes.

Throughout the series, and especially during Tarmon Gai'don, balance is a main theme. To me it seems that the Creator's goal is to maintain balance within the Pattern, not to "win" like the DO wants to. If the DO wins everything is remade in his image and we have a world where some people have all the power (and Power) and others are basically slaves. If the reverse happens, as we saw in Rand's vision, the same would ultimately happen. We get a world where there is no free will. In both scenarios everything is black and white, there are no longer greys the way I see it.

To ensure that the balance remains there are so, so many actions and reactions that has to take place. To follow my reasoning in the Slayer thread linked to above, Luc Mantear had to leave for the Blight. This did lead to the Shadow getting a good weapon, but it also lead to Perrin becoming who he had to be in order to accomplish what he did. I see this a lot during the series. The DO creates something or get an advantage and it ultimately turns into a major or minor trial which helps the Light. I could go one here, but then I would probably start talking about Paradise Lost so I'll stop :giggle

What are your thoughts? Do you agree or disagree with my theories about balance? Please add your thoughts!

I think you're spot on about balance. Rand make a remark in the last book about how this is even affecting his ta'veren effect--that because the Dark One is having such a dark effect on the world, now Rand's ta'veren effect only turns up good things because it's needed to balance out the evil: "But, you see, I get only one side of the coin these days. Someone else is doing the bad. The Dark One injects horrors into the world, causing death, evil, madness. But the Pattern...the Pattern is balance. So it works, through me, to provide the other side" (AMoL, Ch. 9).

(And if you ever want to talk about Paradise Lost, my doctorate is in early modern English literature, so I have...lots of thoughts about it :look:)

I did not remember that, Atarah Sedai. Thanks for sharing! Looking forward to continuing the re-read. This series is so massive. I'm so fascinated by the balance stuff because it shows how well planned the series is. I do believe I had it in the back of my mind though, because it's definitely Rands chapters that made me think of this aspect. Did not remember the change in the ta'veren effect though.

The balance between the sexes and later the lack thereof is very important to the story, and mainly what Robert Jordan wanted to expolre as far as I know. The yin-yang especially symbolizes that. The different things that had to happen for the Light to win is what I think is interesting. And that balance is what is important, not pure goodness.

Symbols often start as a way of reminding people of the importance of something. After time the symbols just becomes something to display to be included in something without much thinking about what it means.
