This is something I've been thinking on for a while. It is discussed some in my thread about Slayer. This thread, and first post, will contain massive spoiler from a Memory of Light.
What are your thoughts? Do you agree or disagree with my theories about balance? Please add your thoughts!
Firstly I haven't read the last book more than once and that was years ago. I'm doing a re-read now, currently starting A crown of swords soon, so I apologise if I make mistakes.
Throughout the series, and especially during Tarmon Gai'don, balance is a main theme. To me it seems that the Creator's goal is to maintain balance within the Pattern, not to "win" like the DO wants to. If the DO wins everything is remade in his image and we have a world where some people have all the power (and Power) and others are basically slaves. If the reverse happens, as we saw in Rand's vision, the same would ultimately happen. We get a world where there is no free will. In both scenarios everything is black and white, there are no longer greys the way I see it.
To ensure that the balance remains there are so, so many actions and reactions that has to take place. To follow my reasoning in the Slayer thread linked to above, Luc Mantear had to leave for the Blight. This did lead to the Shadow getting a good weapon, but it also lead to Perrin becoming who he had to be in order to accomplish what he did. I see this a lot during the series. The DO creates something or get an advantage and it ultimately turns into a major or minor trial which helps the Light. I could go one here, but then I would probably start talking about Paradise Lost so I'll stop
