All depends what story they want to tell.

Every character is technically cuttable really. Each cut his has different effects on the story being told.

And I like the Thom bits personally.

Thom is the guy that backs most of the main girls or boys, travelling with both Mat, Nynaeve and later Egwenes Aes Sedai and then Mat in Ebou Dar and Moiraine :)

He may not be an important stand-alone character, but an important background character...

But of course it depends on how much of the LOONG travelling scenes they will keep...

I suppose that at least the series is finished, so there are not going to be any unexpected consequences of removing or character or delaying their introduction, as we saw in that other series.
Making the trip without Thom changes the dynamic between the boys and Moiraine, and makes it harder to have Rand play the flute for lodging, removes the reason for Basel Gil wanting to help the boys, but they can either work around these, either by carefully thinking of reasons that will still make sense, or as another show did, throwing in a lot of action and hoping people will be so distracted they don't notice.

I've still got my fingers crossed for Hugh Laurie as Thom. Feels unlikely but I think he'd be perfect.

As much as I would love to see Odo in Wheel of Time, the guy's 79 years old now. I doubt he'd sign on to a (hopefully) very long project.

That would be AMAZING. Esp since we know he can juggle and fake a limp :look:
Right? And he can sing, and be both funny and serious.

And oooh, yes - Rene Auberjonois is an amazing actor! Sadly he and Andrew Robinson (Garrick) are both prob too old at this point, but I'd watch either of them in anything.

Perrin doesnt look large, so they either have to change his character, or come up with another motivation for his over-cautiousness
IIRC, his caution was more due to his strength than his size, and that can still come into play. Plus, there are ways to film that would make him look more imposing.

And play a million instruments

You're prob right but if they did an animated thing while he's alive I could totes see him voice acting (or a video game)

79 isn't that old... Patrick Stewart is 79 and he just took on a whole new series!

[jaw drops] 25 ... or 26 ... seasons? I can't imagine how many times they'd have to recast everyone. I was thinking 10, although if they chop out enough could possibly winnow it down to 9, maybe 8.

For Thom I'm thinking Christopher Waltz (63) could pull it off, and I really like the idea of Jeremy Irons someone mentioned above. Gary Oldman (61) is a pretty big name and he already did Harry Potter so maybe not the best pick for another big franchise, but he's one of my all-time favorites so I'd be thrilled. Another casting choice that is a little "out there" but I'm actually starting to like him for Thom is Paul Rudd (50). Slap a wig and a mustache on him and he looks the part (imo) and The Catcher was a Spy shows I think he has the acting chops for it. He's got that twinkle I think Thom needs. I also loved Jeffrey Dean Morgan in The Good Wife (tho again another genre franchise vet). Also Antonia Banderas has that worldly-wise look and I think his accent/voice could be amazing as a bard in Randland.

I wonder how they'll deal with the actors aging, that's worse than GoT. I mean I'll love all the episodes but wow

I thought that was a joke the showrunner made when he was answering questions about the series a while back.

"How many seasons would you make to be able to make the series correctly?"
"36... but that seems untenable."
