Well, it worked for American audiences, because it just came off as "foreign"

I honestly thought she was affecting an accent. :look:

I'm guessing they had her keep that on purpose as she was supposed to be a foreigner in the show. At least I hope so. I don't want Rand to talk like Melisandre.

As long as Seanchan still have Texan accents, I'm good. :rofl

Like Marina Sirtis as Deanna Troi? Apparently hers was sorta based on an Israeli accent, but mostly made up. I didn't recognize Melisandre's as Dutch either, even though I knew where Carice Van Houten was from and now I feel silly. Asshai beyond the Shadow - AKA the Netherlands. :giggle

I...don't know who that is? :look:

In my own defense for thinking it was an affected accent, my forte is in Spanish and other Latin-based languages.

I always imagined it as vaguely French.

I always imagined Cairhienin as vaguely French. :look: I remember an interview with RJ where he said Seanchan had Texan accents, though. (Which is really close to my accent, so it makes me giggle.)

So yeah, I can imagine how a native English speaker would think her just foreign. To me, it was just very jarring, because it sounded so Dutch, which for me is the opposite of the foreign mystique they tried to go for.

I guess therein lies the problem with some English speakers. Any accent I hear in a (Fantasy/Sci-fi) show that is not British or Scottish, I automatically assume for the role.

In Stargate Atlantis, the Czech representative was the child of Czech Immigrants, but apparently hammed up the accent for the show.

It may make you nerdy, but not old. I'm old enough to remember Star Trek, I'm just not a trekkie. :P

I love the accent and the character.

I cannot believe someone will not watch the show because they dont like an actor....
I always view statements like these the same way I view that time when I was 5 years old and said I was gonna run away from home because I didn't get [whatever it was]. Put on my boots and made it to the front door, before I realised that no, I kind of didn't really feel the same, and I got more upset because my parents weren't relenting.

That is to say, I'd bet money that these people are gonna watch it anyway, they just want went their racism :p

I feel a lot of people look at the castings in this way...

The "Two Rivers look" = Everyone looks somewhat the same.

I agree with this as it keeps everything "by the books". But I also agree that talent and the ability to own their character is more important that the color of skin or even the sex of the actor/actress. The color of the actors/actresses has little to do with the overall story and is not something people should worry about.

I actually never thought about it in those absolutes. Like, we know some countries have dominant traits, but I always thought that exceptions were pretty common. Like how Siuan is from Tear where people are dark-skinned, but no one ever thinks even to themselves that it's odd that she's fair-skinned. So even if Two Rivers people mostly have a bit darker skin, it's not odd that Rand or Mat are fairer. I doubt that Rand is the only really tall person there, either, or the only one with red hair or gray eyes - but he might be the only one who has all those traits at the same time, and might be the tallest.

I'm really curious what their accents will sound like, if they'll be British or not. Since they are all coming from different places! Netherlands, New Zealand, Australia, UK.

I'm guessing some sort of standard British, but I do think it's important they all have the same accent. There's usually some racial diversity in a region, but the Two Rivers would definitely have a consistent accent.

I agree. After all, Rand never questioned being Tam's son, and everyone else just accepted him as part of the community. I think his coloring was unusual, but not so remarkable to be suspicious.

Rand's "western Andoran" speech gets remarked on several times in the middle part of the series.
