I loved Skyward. I'll probably end up rereading it sometime this year. I generally can't resist rereading stuff by Sanderson within a year.

Very much this!
I will probably reread it close to when the second comes out because of how fast I powered through it.
Although if we get at ARC at my B&N like we did for the first one.. .

Man, I'll be jealous.

I had actually not expected Skyward to be quite as good as it was, but the more I think about it, the more I'm thinking it makes the perfect recommendation for people who aren't die-hard SFF readers to get them into Sanderson. I'm seriously confused why this isn't hailed as the next HP or Hunger Games. Probably because it doesn't have a movie, I suppose.

I finally read Skyward and I really did like it!
I expected the book to be like Sanderson's other YA books (Rithmatist, Calamity, Alcatraz) but it was completely original. I was nervous that it wouldn't be anything new but I was happily surprised.

Lot of his works are so original it is mindboggling. I love all the unique magic systems.

I just was looking at Amazon and second book of Skyward is up for pre-order, called Starlight, $16 and ships December this year. I grabbed it. :)

So no specific plot spoilers but general discussion of components that aren't on the inside flap or back cover:

I absolutely loved that Skyward was basically a combination of "Top Gun in space" and all those books I read as a tween about a girl who finds a horse in a back pasture that a grumpy old codger says nobody can ride but she rehabilitates it and through Their Special Girl-Horse Bond do something like save the farm.

My partner is an aerospace engineer who is borderline fanatically obsessed with aerial tactics and maneuvers, so I was dying for him to read Skyward. He's read almost a hundred fighter pilot memoirs and we have a bookcase filled with flight strategies and histories of air warfare, so I was curious to see how he'd like that element in Skyward-- he really enjoyed it, said that felt very "real" (as much as SFF tech can be "real"). It continues to amaze me how well Sanderson is able to capture ideas and feelings, like what it feels like to train at a Fighter Weapons School.

Obi-Wan is an aerospace engineer? THE PLOT THICKENS! D: :pleased-1:

I think Sanderson does so well, because he actually consults people like your partner on a regular basis. I'm always impressed with that.

For example, the only reason he's not yet writing The Aztlanian is the fact that his plot is heavily centered around Native American culture, and he wants more time to gain enough knowledge to faithfully represent that.

I just checked Sanderson's main website, looks like book 3 of Skyward will be around 2022-2023 or so, Stormlight Archive 4 and 5 are his focus at the moment, then I believe he said he is doing a warbreaker 2 and maybe more mistborn, not sure.

I really enjoyed the Reckoners trilogy, would like to see more of that too. He already has 70% done of stormlight archive book 4 rough draft done... THE GUY NEVER SLEEPS and on top of that he wrote some story for magic the gathering too.... (a card game I have been playing for last 19 years)

You mentioned a Magic the Gathering story as though it's new. I read one last year, about two sisters doing dark stuff with a bunch of gods a monks and whatnot, but that's nearly a year ago now. I hadn't heard about any new Magic stories yet.

I read Skyward and I enjoyed it far more than I thought I was going to. I've always enjoyed reading Fantasy over Sci-Fi, but Sanderson did a fantastic job here.

I'm excited. I'm gonna go to B&N down the street (literally) to get it that morning. I just hope it's at least 20% off.

I haven't bought a "new" book since Oathbringer came out back in 2017.
